I found this circular saw shaft a few years ago in the junkyard and I knew that one day I would need it. Finally came the day when the shaft looks nice and is restored.
The most important thing was replacing the bearings because they were very worn and noisy. The rest is cleaning and painting :)

I’m surprised that you didn’t smooth out the welds!

The welds are hideous indeed. Maybe it wasn't worth introducing some new thermal stresses? Or maybe some housing will be used eventually? We will see in the episode about the table saw.

The pulley that you put on the shaft has a good bit of run-out.Probably due to a jamming in the history of this shaft housing life. That makes the shaft vibrate and make noise when in use. Just saying Bring me back to life - Restorations.

i bet that at sometime in the past. somebody greased it without wiping the end off the grease gun or the grease fitting and filled the housing with dirt in the grease.. contaminating the bearings. depending on how tight the bearings fit in the housing.. you pressed them in wrong. you should have filed or stoned the marks on the shaft down.. that can effect bearing life... when you pressed the bearing on the shaft.. you should have used a collar that pushed only on the inner race.. then when you pressed the single bearing on the shaft in.. you should have used a press tool that only pressed on the outer race.. then when you turned it over.. you have an issue.. you must push the entire side of the bearing into the housing and onto the shaft.. but both of those have to be supported at the same time. you could have used a collar on the already pressed in bearing that covered both the inside race and outside race.. while pressing the last bearing in using a similar tool that pressed on the inner and outer race at the same time.. this complex procedure would have gotten the bearings installed without destroying the smooth balls and ground races with excessive side loading while you pressed them in.. even putting the double groove pulley on should have had the assembly standing on the shaft while tapping the pulley on. i realize this is just a video.. but doing it right really improves the bearing life.. hopefully there was some kind of dust seal in the outer gland nuts..

Those marks are more than likely from the last repair. Very common hack to get bearings to fit on worn out shafts after a bearing spun on it. A few peens will allow the bearing to fit.

I agree they should have been open both sides . Now they can’t be greased and worse still the outer bushes will be starved of lubrication, if not remedied it would have lasted longer left untouched. That’s my opinion. Otherwise it looks good

Nope ,had a table saw bearing go bad when I was ripping oak . It shot the wood back into me and broke my pelvic bone . The bevel plate then shot over my head and hit a wall 20’ behind me. Got laid off my first day back to work,3 months later. Come to find out two more guys got hurt before that A hole replaced that 5 hp table saw. I still hate table saws .💀💀💀💀💀
