I restored the same mixer. Had problems with fading channels all the time, until I changed all the ribbon cables and all problems were solved. Don’t trust any revision (A or B or G). I had the last ones that were supposed to be the shit. Finally replaced all those with common ribbons that I bought in Aliexpress for cheap, and now I’m super happy with my unit. Finnally I can relay on it.

This is the same mixer I use at home. It sounds great and has all the options I need. I had to take mine apart and clean the ribbon cables with automotive contact cleaner and it has worked great ever since. I bought it as part of a full used PA package that had quite a lot of wear but I'm happy with the mixer

I mixed a bunch of live shows with one just like this back in the early 2000s. They were built like tanks. Looks like the power supply caps and voltage regulator failed as they are want to do over time. It was always a toss up which one died first and took out the other. Done right, you’d replace all the caps, especially the ones in the strips but they probably work ok, just might sound a little crunchy.
@themadmallard3 жыл бұрын
would you say its like one of the best beginner mixers to cut your teeth on, or what?
@Bill_N_ATX3 жыл бұрын
@@themadmallard , the one you can afford. Mixing boards or desks as our English friends call them, start a 39 bucks and go into the millions for a large recording board. The principles are mostly the same be they digital or analog. At the simplest, it’s just a few channels with tone controls and a fader that adds that channels outputs to the master mix. At the most complex, it’s effects lines, sub mixes, mic minuses, automation, tone, compression, and just about any thing you can imagine doing to a wave form. But at their heart they are used to mix sounds. The one you can afford, or beg to use, is the right one. Mix as much as you can, watch others, and read the theory books. Some of the greatest music ever made was done on a 8 channel mono board. It’s a tool. You have to provide the art.
@themadmallard3 жыл бұрын
@@Bill_N_ATX well, this one i think is basically a great starter because all the principal features it has that kind of start you on a journey to more complicated boards later, even fully digital boards.
@Bill_N_ATX3 жыл бұрын
@@themadmallard , if you could get a good used Mackie like this where all the strips worked and the faders were still quiet etc, it would be fine to work and learn on. I did a bunch of live events on one just like it back in the early 2000s.

Wow! Painstaking work! Impressive. I have a Mackie ProFX12v3 and the USB channel 11/12 fader left channel drops out and crackles. I have to pot it up to full max to get both channels to read on the VU meters. And sometimes I get levels when it's potted all the way down 🤔. At times I can just tap on the fader knob and audio jumps on with the fader completely down. It's really wonky and I'm not a super tech like the guy in this video. I was thinking I may need to just clean it out with compressed air or one of those computer air blowers. Any suggestion from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

The one thing you didn't do (which is absolutely essential) is to clean out the quarter-inch jack sockets, cos they're gonna be very corroded inside and won't give a good connection. You can get a special tool to do it.

So you are basically saying th one thing that wasnt done was "restoring" the console then?

Before you tore it all apart I would have fixed the obvious power supply issues first and tested and evaluated the rest. Then used a vacuum while getting the dust off the faders instead of getting it everywhere, perhaps even into the faders. We didn’t need to see you takeoff every single knob. But I hope it was worth it when you can get these off eBay in decent working shape for around $300.
