...I think I know why you like those Tissots from the early '50s. Those Tissots, sometimes dual-branded Omega-Tissot right on the dial, don't fall far from the Omega tree. What I'm immediately confronted with is this 1st Gen Visodate is the striking similarity to the Rolex so-called "Tuxedo Dials" of the same period. Talk about a beautiful watch!

That's right. I do examine the movement before putting it into the cleaning basket. If the setting gears are clean (since these gears do not affect the timing accuracy of the watch) and I've used the rodico to clean it as well, I'll leave them all intact. The full restoration takes much longer than just 30+ minutes. Anything that can affect the timing performance, I will take it apart to thoroughly examine it. Remember that the main purpose of wearing a watch is to tell time. Not sure if you're a watchmaker or not, but the cleaning solution will clean away any residue that remain on the movement.

@@TimelessHistoryChannel Not a watchmaker I have completed a few watch strip downs and cleaning plus repairs to broken watches. Only cheap watches nothing like what you are doing. Very satisfying when you get an old battered, broken or non runner back to life. Fascinated with watch workings and how they are built. Started servicing myself because it was hard to justify getting them serviced when the watch was only 20 or 30 dollars but they deserved to be preserved and used.

I notice you assemble the train from the balance to the barrel as opposed to barrel to balance, any particular reason? I'm going to try it that way on the next movement I service. Seems oiling the fork jewels and checking balance function are easier the way you do it. Thanks, great video.

Great work. I know you have mentioned a method to adjust the beat error by tweezing the hair spring in one of my comment before but I never heard about anyone else who does it that way and still dont know exactly how can it be done. Can you explain the way in detail? I would be very appreciated.
@TimelessHistoryChannel
@TimelessHistoryChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Oh really? I learned this method from a former Bulova watchmaker. It saves a lot of time, and you can adjust it while the balance is still on the movement. You can use the tweezers with the hook end, or regular tweezers will work as well. To correct the beat error using this method, you adjust the hairspring with the tweezer. Before adjusting, you must eye-level the hairspring to see the spreading of the hairspring. The balance staff will be the center. If the hairspring is more toward the left, you will need to adjust the left size by curling the most outer coil slightly and vice versa. Do not bend the hairspring. You are just adjusting the curvature of the hairspring.
@sonvu9756
@sonvu9756 3 жыл бұрын
I see. So I assume that after decades the hair sping got slightly out of shape, which causes the collet to be off center and by curling the most outer coil will get the collet and also bear error right again. Unless a previous watchmaker have removed the hairspring and put it back way off then turning/re-fit the collet is the only way. I mainly work on modern movement but if I run into these vintage oneday this magic spell may make my life alot easier. Thank you.

How did you adjust the hairspring with the tweezers?
@TimelessHistoryChannel
@TimelessHistoryChannel 2 жыл бұрын
It takes a lot of practice over the years. You need to curve/coil the hairspring so that it balance out when the wheel is spinning. This way will save you time and work to remove the complete balance and hairspring. Whoever you learned your watchmaking skill from should be able to show you in person.

I like watching your videos and also like your style. However, unlike other watch restorers who make videos, you do not seem to take the keyless mechanisms apart. Is there a reason for this apart from saving time?
@TimelessHistoryChannel
@TimelessHistoryChannel 3 жыл бұрын
I do examine the gears thoroughly off camera. I must make sure that there is no hair particle on any of the winding gears. I understand that it looks better to remove these parts under the camera, but in reality, the majority of watchmakers will not need to remove these parts. These are sturdy parts and do not affect the timing of the watch. The only time that I will remove these parts (clutch wheel, winding wheel, and yoke) is when I see rust or broken teeth. Most importantly, is to use the correct cleaning solution. I use L&R Ultrasonic cleaning solution and it will remove and dissolve any dirt that is on the movement. The cleaned movement will look shiny like new. I've serviced over a few thousands of watches, you can trust my words. Notice at the end of the video how I used a tweezer to adjust the beat error? When a watchmaker watches this video, I can assure you he will understand what kind of watchmaker I am. When a watchmaker is able to correct the hairspring with his tweezer, that takes a lot of skill and years of practice. :-)
@gwsjr1
@gwsjr1 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimelessHistoryChannel But we didn't see you correct the hairspring. You only showed what type of tweezers you're supposed to use for making the adjustments. .
@TimelessHistoryChannel
@TimelessHistoryChannel 2 жыл бұрын
@@gwsjr1 My camera would not be able to show clearly in the first place. And my head would be covering the camera in order to clearly see the hairspring. Also, correcting or adjusting the hairspring is not for a beginner watchmaker to do. I remember my very first time trying to fix a slight bent hairspring took me about 3 hours to do...AND I still couldn't properly fix the bent. On top of that, my entire face and head was full of sweat. lol
