Funny Kenji story! While working for the MTA we routinely had to drive the busses thru the bus wash- Before the wash there was a huge pit that a mechanic could walk in and inspect the undercarriage of the bus. It was only used a few times a month... One day while driving over the 30 foot long pit I saw something dart across! I thought it was a Rat! However upon closer inspection I realized it was a small kitten! My friend Justin and I entered the pit from each end and caught the kitten! She was about the size of a soda can! Well, we looked all over for the mother to no avail- Afraid it would get hit by a bus I decided to take her home... The kitten was happy and healthy but needed a name- another friend at work said “How about Kenji!” I said “Kenji? I never heard of that!” He said Kenji was Japanese for “Lucky”. I thought “What a fitting name!” So I named her Kenji!!
Fast forward three years and I find out Kenji doesn’t mean Lucky- it means “Strong, second Son”. To this day I never told Kenji the truth! 😃

Here's some info on this screwdriver: UMT is the name of "Urim Metal" - an old metal factory in Kibbutz Urim (western Negev area) in Isreal. It started as "Urim Metal" - a factory for knives and cutlery (I think), that later (circa 1977) moved to manufacturing screwdrivers. During this transformation they also changed the name to "UMT". in a newspaper article from 1977 they claim to manufacture around 27 screwdriver models, which are assembled from 2 parts: an acetate handle made in germany by "Bayer", and the steel blade that is made locally in Israel. I believe the factory no longer exists today. I hope it helps, love your channel! :) Hebrew speaking viewers can find the original article at www.jpress.nli.org.il/Olive/APA/NLI_heb/?action=search&text=%D7%90%D7%95%D7%9E%D7%AA%20%D7%90%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%9D#panel=search&search=0

ScoutCrafter thank you! It's the least I can do. Israel is quite young and doesn't have much history in tool industry, I was lucky to find that information myself :) You did a beautiful job on this one, just like on all the other tools. Thanks for taking care of these pieces of history!

@@ScoutCrafter I got inspired watching your wonderful restorations and decided to try on some of my old tools. I started on a screwdriver that is almost a mirror copy of the one you did but I always have trouble shaping flat screwdriver heads - so you have a video that shows how to do this?
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian! In the beginning the best way to shape a screwdriver blade is by hand using sandpaper wrapped around a small block of wood! You are so right as it is very easy to over-grind the profile of such a small area!!!

Bayer's history ties it to IG Farben. It's fascinating that an Israeli company would do business with them.

Today I was lucky enough to find a 1/4x4 UMT screwdriver at a thrift shop. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone when I saw that it was made in Israel and that the blade was stainless steel. It had a bit of paint splatter, but in a few minutes, it cleaned up and looks nearly as good as your finished restoration. Thanks for the tip on the clear coat!

ScoutCrafter, I just laughed hard when I saw this project because it has everything you love: Exotic, Hefty, and not just Red... translucent Red just like the Klein Plier grips you love so much. If we could, we'd have your whole shop dipped in transluscent red plastic!!! Nice job, really, and adding the clear coats really did make up most of the finish gap to what you wanted.

Amazing job on bringing that one back. I do have a question. How do tool collectors feel in general about restoring tools? Do they see it as removing character and patina? More curious than anything. I like seeing some things being brought back like you do. A whole lot of people in the world now would just throw away something like this and buy a new one.
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 6 жыл бұрын
Hello BenG76show - Between me and you... I never liked "Patina". It's nothing but a combination of tarnish and rust! The only "patina" I like is on the Wood of old tools like hammers, axes... I used to belong to a antique tool collecting club, you had the old guy who just loved tools, used to wire brush them clean, shellac them and sell them cheap because he had multiples... Then there was the "Collector" who never used a tool and only wanted tools that other people wanted... He dealt in Starrett, Snap-on, Wilton vises and whatever else was hot at the time! I would always be laughing with the first guy... Enjoying his tools and swapping stories... I don't like tool-snobs! Lol. I don't restore high end or pristine tools just because I don't want to take away their value to someone but if it's rusty! All bets are off! 😃👍. Thanks very much!!!!

ScoutCrafter I think about the typical hygene in the 1800's. No toilet paper. No running water. Outdoor privies. That's not patina. It is everything the person ever touched rubbed deeply into the grain and every nook or cranny in the tool. It never pays to think too deeply about anything. Lots of hot water and Greased Lightning.

Scout, have you ever restored old plastic handle screwdrivers that get that white coating and smell like puke? My dad gave me an old set years ago and they have that stinky smell. When I was a kid, I always wondered why his tool drawer smelled that way until I figured out it was the screwdrivers. Is there a permanent way to fix them?

That was a great transformation, it probably looks better now than it did when it was new ! Thankyou for the tip on using clear coat for the handles, that is so much easier than using a slow speed polishing buff & compound to get the same look yet without loosing any handle material or loss of moulding shape. Brilliant 👍

Hello Terry! Yes, unfortunately the lettering on these acetate screwdrivers are the first to go! You could save the lettering but you would have two dull, untouched valleys in the screwdriver that would look un-presentable. The screwdriver has no value to destroy anyway... Hello Ian! That Sink has a long history!!!! It was my Grandmothers for 40 years until she literally wore it out, then it was put down the basement as a slop sink for everything from cleaning fish to pain brushes! Then 20 years ago I though let me spruce her up, I spent HOURS scrubbing and bleaching and using chemicals to get her somewhat presentable... Then after a week it looked just like it does now! I was shocked! Then my Father told me that the porcelain completely wore off it when my Grandmother had it and the surface was now porous and no matter what you do it will absorb every and all stains... Now I know why they call it a slop sink!!!!! lol

ScoutCrafter I bought a few of those adjustable box wrenches off a clearance table probably 20 years ago. I think they were Stanly, not sure about that. I think one is in the shed now. They aren't able to work in restricted areas very well. Never got much use.

I used to use one of those when welding, if I couldn't find it close I used the handle of my mason's hammer, and it still has a torch burn on it 40 years later! sometimes I cuddle it in the living room and wonder if anyone could restore it,...

Hi. Love your videos! What do you do with all your restorations? Do you sell them? Are there collectors out there? I honestly think that globally, we should just stop producing new stuff for 1 to 2 years. There is so much awesome gear out there that needs some love and attention. I think there is enough discarded goods out there to last 10 or 20 years!

Hello DSE! You are so right! Restoring older tools is a great way to have a high quality set of tools at a fraction of the cost of new! Plus the value always goes up! LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too have a tool made in Israel, its a guide clamp, a big long extruded aluminium with two plastic stops and an arm, so you can use it to clamp wood, but as its straight at the sides, it can guide a saw

I love your videos. I would like to do things like you to some tools I have. Could you please elaborate as to the grit you used on the handle and the color rouges you use. Thanks and keep the videos coming.

Hello Frank! I did another video where I restored 3 Acetate screwdrivers and went a little further into the sanding process... We basically start with 300 grit and go up as high as 2500! It's all just about getting the scratches out from the last grit!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!

I wasn't able to see the lettering on the handle after the finish. Were you able to save it?
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Gen-X! Unfortunately there was no way to save it other then leaving that area untouched... That would look terrible. Lots of screwdrivers used a paint stamp and that always came off with time... If they were hot pressed you would have a better chance! Thanks!!!!!!!
