6:21 I only recently caught this addiction this year and in the past few months have spent thousands at salvage. I blame the knowledge and resources to restore old items to new or sometimes better-than-new condition. The sense of satisfaction and lasting high that comes from restoring a tool that you could never have had a chance to own (either because it predates your time on this planet or due to cost) is like no other that I have ever experienced. One can simply walk into a shop full of things that were hard won and scrounged, then brought back to life is the only thing one needs to persist.

Looks like you had a great time at the tool show. I admit that I am surprised that you didn't pick up at least one skein of rope off that pile on the tarp. I do admire your strength of spirit and restraint in the face of so many old tools at such reasonable prices. I was so happy to see you pick up a hammer and punch to fix the Mercedes wrench instead of using the grinder or file. Many of these little dings can be moved back into place without taking off any material. Looking forward to the restoration of the Estwing Hammer. The metal handle is much more appropriate for use in a finishing hammer than the heavier framing hammer.

Good tip on repairing the dings on the wrench. I used that same technique repairing aluminum molds at my work. I would place a brass scraper flat against the damaged area and then strike it with a hammer. I would then polish the area. My company put a lot of trust in me as these molds cost between $150, 000 and $200, 000. Each .

9:02 those look like fabric shears for a tailor, what a find! 9:54 I found a cure for the smell! Hydrogen peroxide. From my tests, I took a screwdriver that barely smelled, left it outside for 2 weeks, then it really smelled (as the CAB breaks down under moisture and warmth), then soaked it in 3% for 2 days and the smell was almost completely gone. If you use 12%, the smell is gone in hours. You may have to dump and cycle the peroxide as the stink floats to the top. Wipe down everything before putting it back in if two baths are needed. It’s a bacteria that causes the stench by consuming the cellulose leaving butyric acid in its wake. Any biocide will work but fresh hydrogen peroxide is gentle and won’t hurt the paints.
