I didn't show too much of the effort in the video, but it works quite good, if you get a good quality metal paint. I also used the spray in the past just as well. I have actually no preference, but it's very important to prepare the surface properly. If you have 2 in 1 paint with ground coat included, it's ok to use that directly on the metal. If not, I strongly suggest to put a layer of ground coat before painting with the final paint. Doesn't matter, if you use a spray or a roller.

Good job ! The final result is really amazing. In order to remove a CPU from a non ZIF socket, I use to use a lego brick separator (the orange tool), that has the advantage to be in plastic and won't scratch anything. But if the CPU is very tightly set, the thin plastic may twist and break. Alternatively, a bracket slot cover does the job too, and because it is wider than a screwdriver, is is safer IMO. Well the ideal keeps being to use a dedicated tool, but it is complicated to find, unless you got an overdrive CPU with its box :)

hi.nice job!...the old cases are powder coated usually....if you dont use 2 component paint usually it will leave a mark when you put something on top of the case for a very long time...the best paints are automotive acrylic paint or epoxy paint. both are mixed with a hardener and they dry very fast. after a day you can put a monitor on top and leave it there... automotive paint is not expensive and can be found in many places, you just cant geat away with rolling it because its thin, it should be sprayed...maybe a textured primer for car bumpers before the paint will give it the grainy texture....you can have automotive paint made for the colour you want by showing the old piece to the shop and they mix the paint for you. overhere acrylic paint is about 20€ per liter but you can buy only 1/4 of a liter....then you need hardener and thinner, both are cheap too....and primer is a good ideia...cheers

Thanks for your videos :)
@necro_ware3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! In regards of ISA riser, no reason to worry. ISA was very simply made, all slots are connected in parallel to the same bus, doesn't matter, if they are all on the mainboard, or you connect everything through a riser card. There is no glue logic or something similar between the slots. It's more just like everything would hang on the same cable, so you can't get any conflicts by just putting all cards into the same riser. I mean you will get conflicts, but the usual ones, like if you'd put your cards directly into the mainboard.

I outfitted it with full scsi treatment when I got it, as it was an upgrade for my then SX 20 computer, this Laser was a DX33 with 256k cache and even had a cyrix fasmath when I purchased it. And weirdly had 16 30 pin simm slots. It served me well for a couple of years as well. CL5429 vga and soundblaster AWE32 by the time I retired it. Adaptec SCSI with 340mb hd/2x cdrom and external scanner and another 210mb hd in external cage. I also had ethernet and MPU401 card, so i was nearly maxed out with it.

About the battery 2032: I did almost the same (I removed the resistor that feed the battery instead of reroute the diode) in one of my 386sx fix with ALi chipset. However I have a strange behavior; if I leave the board unplugged for a certain amount of time (let's say 10 minutes or more) I get the error "the RTC battery is discharged)". I doesn't appear if I switch off and then on in few minutes. Of course the battery is new, 3.2 volts. Strange, isn't it? Have you had the same trouble sometimes? Or the mistake was the resistor vs. diode change?
Fantastic video again. Thank you for making such detailed videos so specifically tailored for my interests 😂

does changing the crystal not affect the non-turbo speed? You set the display to 8MHz but I’d have thought it’d be closer to 10MHz now?
@necro_ware3 жыл бұрын
As I said, this LEDs don't represent anything in real, so I don't know now how fast it will be with turbo off in relation to turbo on. I'll have to make some benchmarks, but I guess, that I'll get some numbers, which are even far lower, than what would be 8 MHz
@claw_md3 жыл бұрын
@@necro_ware I assumed that the chipset just divides the crystal frequency by 8 to arrive at the non-turbo clock? So a 66.667MHz crystal freq would divide to a 8.33MHz clock, and a 80MHz crystal would divide to a 10MHz clock. I may be totally wrong about that, I just assume that’s how the turbo button is implemented. Your videos are great, I always learn something that helps with my own retro PC repairs.
@necro_ware3 жыл бұрын
@@claw_md Well, not quite. First of all the crystal oscillator frequency is not the same as the frequency the CPU is working at, but a half (at least on this board, there are boards existing, which work at full frequency of an oscillator). So here the old CPU frequency was 66MHz/2=33MHz, that divided by 8 would be 4MHz eventually and not 8MHz. However this is still not quite right, since every board implements turbo functionality in a slightly different way. Some boards add an external frequency divider (usually a flip-flop array), or implement it directly in the chipset. The division is not always the same, some boards divide by 8, some by 4 and others by 16. So, in the end, to represent the non-turbo frequency on the front display, in a more or less precise way, you have to measure it and setup it later. However, since it's more for an aesthetic reason, it is not important to have it very precise I guess. The main thing is, that it looks cool :)
@nickwallette62013 жыл бұрын
Tradition is to set the low speed to 8 or 16MHz regardless of whatever the board is actually doing. :-) Nobody knew any better, and nobody cared. It looked cool, and that was enough.

That is why I made my 386dx that I built few years ago 33Mhz personally. I think it is a mistake that people think that faster is better. It all depends on what you are going to use computer for.
@necro_ware3 жыл бұрын
That's why computers had a turbo button back than. The games, which were running too fast were usually made for 286 or even XT. The strange thing was, that as soon, as I inserted any graphics card, no mater ISA, or VLB, the board didn't beep at all and hung in memory test cycle. That's why I assumed, there must be something wrong with the memory. Meanwhile, I found out, that one 74LS245 to the ISA bus was dead and the BIOS EPROM seems to have also issues on D7. I replaced the buffer and the EPROM, now the board works again. I assume, there was a short in the past, which killed the fuse in the PSU and damaged the ICs on the board. By the way you seem to have exactly the same board as the one I was trying to fix which had a missing GAL chip (do you remember it ?) maybe you could help me fix it ? :D Which glue did you use for the corner ? I have a 486 case which has a cracked corner (the pieces aren't separated from the case, but there are many ugly notches) and I'm looking for the best way to fix it (my attempt with regular glue didn't really work)

Hi Deksor! Thank you! We have an agreement with my wife. She doesn't see my computers, I don't see her shoes ;) Unfortunately, I don't remember the GAL issue with your board, but if I can help I'd be glad to. Probably it will not be possible to read the GAL, because they are usually protected from reading, but we can give it a try. Who knows?! The glue for plastic which I'm using is for models, as I said. You know the plastic airplanes, ships, cars and such things? It is an acetone based plastic glue, Revell Contacta in my case. From the inner side I used the superglue with baking soda. If you want to use that one, first try it on a piece of paper, you will not get even a second to correct it.

@@necro_ware someone on vogons dumped their GAL, and I tried to flash what they dumped, but it didn't work. Most of the dump was filled with zeroes so I'm not sure if it actually worked ... Thanks for the glue tip !
@necro_ware3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is the problem. You can only dump GAL, if the manufacturer proactively disabled read protection. Unfortunately, non of them ever did....

@@necro_ware do you think yours could be retro engineered ? or does it have registers ?
@necro_ware3 жыл бұрын
Well, everything can be re-engineered :D However, I can't tell now how complicated it would be. Therefore I have to disassemble the PC again to analyse the traces.... I'm afraid, I'm a bit short on time now to do this.

It seems like you have a Mitsumi CRMC-FX400E CD-ROM drive. As far as I can tell, the manual ejecting mechanism is possible by pushing and turning a plastic screw in the hole right below the tray. Source: www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=48835&start=200 Nice video btw.

Unfortunately I cut out that moment in the video, but I tried and it still didn't want to come out, so I had to use another method.
