3 жыл бұрын

I greet you on my channel. In this video you will see the restoration of a very old, rusty
a flattened hammer This is another find at a scrap metal collection point.
Since I found this hammer without a handle, I made a new handle using oak and maple lamellas,
and covered it with linseed oil. It turned out very nicely.

Very nice job Andrey - the handle looks great!! What is the final weight of the hammer? You should try gun bluing. The black layer from hot bluing is much more durable

That flattening hammer had been flattened lol Suggestion: When you use the rust remover cover it all the way!! It will cause a line the you can't get rid of. You didn't have it because you Took a lot of metal off by grinding. You did a great job restoring that!! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

Sweet restoration. Any specific kind of rust remover you recommend?
@Toystorations
@Toystorations 3 жыл бұрын
not the guy you were asking, but since he didn't respond yet, I'd say he used simple green here, I've had luck with plain vinegar, pine oil (pinesol does not have pine oil in it, some other brands do) and lately I've been using Oxalic acid which you can get online in bulk for cheap, or get it as a wood bleach in stores. Dilute it, let it sit in a vat, and then brushie brushie was a nylon brush or something and be sure to neutralize it since it is an acid, and then rinse it off good with water and get it completely dry so it won't corrode or rust. If it's submerged, rust comes off. If it is exposed, rust forms. That's the general rule for stuff like vinegar and acid and things. There are some safer commercial alternatives to this for rust remover as well, but they don't work as well.

@@Toystorations thank you for the information. I occasionally have some really rusted items I want to clean nice and good so I can forge weld to make canister damascus from weird items. Rust is a no go so I have to figure out the best way to clean especially in hard to reach areas.
@Toystorations
@Toystorations 3 жыл бұрын
@@JPsBladeworks I have a railroad spike that sat in a puddle for over a hundred years and was a giant hunk of rust. I sat it for a couple of days in a sealed tupperware container of vinegar and then rinsed it in water and hit it with a degreaser like a brake cleaner or something and it was unbelievably pitted and porous from the rust and you wouldn't know it was a railroad spike from looking at it, but it is absolutely rust free. You can add salt to the vinegar in a ratio of one cup of salt per one gallon of white vinegar, and re-use the vinegar mixture for quite some time and it will get all of the rust after a few hours if it is not very rusty, or a couple days if it is very bad. Just make sure it is completely submerged and that's the easiest, cheapest way I can think of to do it. You can get fancier and use electrolysis or stronger acids to do it but the vinegar absolutely works given enough time. Good luck with your projects it sounds fun.
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 3 жыл бұрын
@@Toystorations I just got my hands on some cable. Hopefully it works for making cable damascus. Not sure what kind of metal it is but im going to give it a try. Do you think that leaving it in vinegar with salt with be able to leave clean metal for working?
@Toystorations
@Toystorations 3 жыл бұрын
@@JPsBladeworks I think it should be fine, just make sure you wash it in water really good afterwards and dry it even better, and use it right away because rust can form overnight and ruin it if it has to be completely rust free. I feel like the heat should help with the light surface rust if you're forging.

I don't think you can call it a restoration, because you did not restore it to its original condition, but whatever you did to it it looks really nice and it was literally scrap before you did it, so I'll call it a win. Do you plan to actually use it, or is it just decorative? Do you need to harden the face of the hammer before using it, or can you use it as-is? Really fascinating stuff here.
