I guess this might come in handy if I run into a cash of cabinet magnets and aluminum tract. However it looks weak.

Great post. Can you tell us what you used to polish the zinc before bluing? Some sort of wax or was something else was applied to it?

Thank you so VERY much for this. I have an older Central Machinery 8" Bench top drill press and for some reason the jaws have become loose and sometime fall out. I have no clue about repairing these but with your video, I have learned much. .

It's excellent but you forgot adding grease! Without grease the jaws' teeths will worn sooner with the use and all the internal mechanism will get rusty and increase the friction of the parts. Maybe now without disassembling again you could try fill it with grease and then, with the jaws fully open and pointing up, heat slowly all the chuck in some way without direct contact with fire, and see if some of the grease liquifies itself and penetrates, then give it a couple of twists and finally if it twists smoother just take off the excess grease and it's done. Or simply just open it again and add some grease directly. Or, as last resort, spread wd40 on it occasionally. Very nice soviet chuck!

Nice final look. However you cannot use this for it's original purpose. These are made to a specific tolerance. When they leave the factory they have a specific accuracy for a right angle. When you sand the edges it loses it's original perpendicularity. The writing etched on the blade is how accurate it is. This is no longer true. Besides that, it was probably thrown away because it was dropped and the engineer could no longer use it because it is not an accurate right angle. If it was sitting in a scrap heap you cannot be certain it was not damaged all this time either.
