The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

5 жыл бұрын

When Jesus Christ lived on the earth, He organized His Church, “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20). After Christ’s death and Resurrection, He told His Apostles to continue teaching the gospel. They did as He asked, but eventually they died and the truth of Christ’s Church disappeared during a period called the Apostasy.
In the early 1800s, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to a young man in answer to his prayer about which church to join. This young man, Joseph Smith, was told not to join any of them but that Christ’s Church would be restored through him. This led to the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 1830, a direct answer to the Apostle Peter’s prophecy in the New Testament that there would be a “restitution of all things” (Acts 3:21).
The divine return of the Church of Jesus Christ, coupled with modern-day prophets, apostles, priesthood authority, and all gospel light and knowledge, is what members of the Church refer to as the Restoration.
God restored His Church for a very simple reason: He loves all His children and wants them to have joy in this life and eventually return to live with Him. Through His living prophets and the truths in His restored Church, God shows us the way.

@@debwhite5281 Actually, it doesn't. How much do you know about the Bible? John the Apostle wrote in his book of Revelation the words you're citing. When he wrote it, the Bible had not yet been compiled into a single volume. The writings of the old prophets were separate. Thus, it's obvious that John was referring to the Book of Revelation when saying that nothing should be added or taken away. John himself wrote wrote his "gospel", or his account of Jesus's life, after recording the Revelation. Interestingly, Moses wrote the same thing about his written works back in Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32, but we don't reject everything after Deuteronomy, do we? I'd encourage you to learn more about the Bible, and also to learn more about the great work God is doing in our day in the Church of Jesus Christ.

Grace is unmerited favor from God. Faith is trust in Christ. Salvation is by grace through faith, not of works plus faith. The book of Mormon says that you are saved by grace after all that you can do. Which contradicts what God's word has said, which is by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourself it is the gift of God not of works least any one should boast. Salvation has always been by grace through faith, always from the time of Paul, to Martin Luther to now, Jesus did call us to repent and trust in him but repentance is not what grants you salvation but is what is required with faith in Jesus, faith in Jesus is what counts us righteous before god. Jesus who is God who has always existed with the father and the holy spirit as one God in three distinct persons for enternity. That Jesus died for your sins, took the punishment we deserve, he was than buried, and on the third day he rose from the grave, you must repent and trust in Christ, but know that the repentance and faith and salvation is a gift from God freely given, you can not earn it, nor lose it.

Hi @Matthew Huen, thanks for watching and for giving us an opportunity to share our beliefs about grace. We believe that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all mankind may be saved. As Elder Uchtdorf, a Church leader, has taught, "Salvation cannot be bought with the currency of obedience; it is purchased by the blood of the Son of God." We strive for improvement and progress and obey the commandments of God to show our love for Him. You and others interested can learn more about our beliefs on grace at the links below: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2015/04/the-gift-of-grace?lang=eng www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics/grace?lang=eng

Matthew, let me help you out here. 2 Nephi 25:23 reads, "For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." This passage shows that nothing we can do of ourselves is enough, and we must look to our Savior Jesus Christ for the grace we need to receive salvation. The Church's response above highlights this. Please feel free to learn more by following the links provided by the Church.

We do believe that grace is a gift from God. We believe that we are already saved by grace through Jesus Christ's atoning sacrifice. We also believe that we cannot lose or earn his grace nor have to be worthy of it because He already paid the price. All men have access to His grace and atonement. However, we believe that because of that gift we must strive to follow Him and love him and keep his commandments to show our appreciation for that gift. Grace indeed does not come after our works, more we show appreciation for his wonderful gift of grace through our works. We believe that our works reflect our faith and that we should do good to all men and come unto Christ and become like him. Here is a video on grace and what we believe Christ's grace to be. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r327o2yfqcSjmLs (His Grace Is Sufficient - Brad Wilcox)

Do you mind if I ask you a few questions? I've talked to a few missionaries and asked them how someone knows the LDS church is true and they talked about praying about it. But I still don't understand how exactly that's supposed to work because I've grown up going to a protestant church and we already pray and receive answers about those prayers. I've personally been involved in bible studies where we study the gospel and we usually open and close the study each night praying that God would guide us in the study. But if the LDS church is true, that means those studies were teaching a false gospel. So how would I trust my prayer about the LDS church while also doubting the prayers about a gospel I've been studying for many years?
@jime3281
@jime3281 5 жыл бұрын
@@Dustin_McNab Our church believes that most Christian denominations have truths of the restored Gospel. Your case is of course individual to yourself, but feeling the Spirit and/or receiving answers to questions from the Lord from those classes should not be discounted. It takes a lot of skill to discover what truly is individual revelation- I mean every world religion has devout followers that claim they've felt a spiritual experience. You have to try to study our teachings and pray- you claim you've received answers. Why should this be any different?
@00Fisher00
@00Fisher00 5 жыл бұрын
@@Dustin_McNab Different churches teach different doctrines, and while that means that there is necessarily some error in the various denominations, there is also some truth to be found in them, and the Holy Ghost will testify of that truth. There's no need to doubt what you have received from God already. However, if God has restored His Church, then should we not seek the greater truth there? God will always guide us as we seek him, but there are some things we can ask of Him specifically that will be particularly important. A great place to start is the Book of Mormon, and I'll explain why. As we study the Book of Mormon and pray about it, we can receive a very real witness from God about its truth as another book of scripture. Moroni, the last prophet to write in the Book of Mormon, encouraged exactly this in Moroni 10:3-5 (www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/moro/10). When God reveals the truth of the Book of Mormon to us, we then have an assurance that Joseph Smith was a true prophet and that the church he restored is indeed the true Church of Jesus Christ. Then, as you come to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you will see more and more of what God has revealed to mankind in our day.

One thing that always comes up when I talk with baptist apologists is how in Daniel 2, it talks about how the kingdom of God, once established on earth (when Jesus first came) would never be destroyed and will endure forever, therefore the apostasy could never happen. I mean to me it definitely seems like there was an apostasy just because of all the horrible things that happened in the world at that time and all the atrocious things that people supposedly did in Gods name at the time. But it also seems to say In Daniel that the kingdom of God was still present during that time. Any body have any ideas on that

This is what I understood on Daniel 2. Daniel did interpret the King's dream of a stone cut without hands and shall fill the whole earth, which is a representation of Christ church. And in verse 28, Daniel said that the dream that the King had is what will happen in the latter days(or what we believe is the last days or the days we are living right now), therefore, supporting other prophecies of other prophets that there would be a "falling away first (Apostasy), then the "restitution of all things" or the Restoration of Church of Jesus Christ and His gospel, which represented the "stone cut without hands and shall roll forth and fill the earth."

That scripture you are referring to was Daniel 2:44, part of Daniel's interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream, that the God of Heaven would set up a kingdom that would never be destroyed, and would not be left to another people, but that it would break into pieces and consume all these kingdom's, and would stand forever. The church Christ set up, could not have been the kingdom Daniel foresaw. In Matthew 21:43 We see where "Christ and The Kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof." So, the church Christ organized was left and given to another people. This supports the apostasy that was prophesied and it did happen. So the kingdom that would be set up that would stand forever and not be given to another people, would be a church that would be set up in the last days.

Daniel 2:28 Daniel informs Nebuchadnezzar that his dream is regarding the latter day, not the time of Christ, which might be called the meridian of time. The stone appears after many kingdoms have already fallen and given rise to others. The stone is the latter-day kingdom of God.

I wonder why this video says that the original apostles died off and the priesthood vanished. Did the apostles not ordain other bishops and priests to hand on the faith? Christian tradition in the early church says yes... so therefore the faith was never lost and there was never a restoration.

Hi Noah Ishmael, thanks for your thoughtful question. As the Church of Jesus Christ grew, the apostles faced dissent among believers and harsh opposition from nonbelievers. Many apostles were martyred, and people disagreed about the meaning of Jesus’s teachings. People began forming various churches without God’s authority to do so. These churches strayed from Jesus Christ’s original Church. As a result, Christianity experienced a widespread Apostasy, or departure from core religious beliefs. God’s priesthood, or the authority to act in His name, was lost, pure principles were corrupted, and the truths of the gospel were scattered. To learn more about the period of apostasy following the death of Jesus Christ's apostles and biblical prophecies of a restoration, see the following links: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics/apostasy?lang=eng; www.comeuntochrist.org/beliefs/jesus-christ-church

One thing that's interesting to notice is that even in the apostles' time, they had need to correct false ideas and practices within the Church, as is seen in the epistles of the New Testament. When the apostles were no longer on the Earth, this guidance was lost. The priesthood was lost as well, but restored in our day.

The whole world is calling us Mormons today, as taught to them by our ourselves. To change this, we must refer to ourselves by the true name of the church, not Mormons. The first word in this video is Mormons. This is what will stick in the minds of people, not the real name. I predict as long as we use the word Mormons in any context, the world and we ourselves will continue to call ourselves Mormons. It will not change until we stop using the word Mormons altogether. 50 years from now they will still be calling us Mormons unless we begin to refer to ourselves as members of the church is Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

It’s important to understand what Peter was saying in Acts chapter 3. First off in verse 21 the Bible tells us Heaven “receives” Him until the restoration of all things. This is after his resurrection and ascension to Heaven. At this point He doesn’t leave his Father’s side until his second coming. Second, Peter was trying to tell the jews that Jesus was the prophet spoken of by Moses in Dueteronomy 18:15. Peter was quoting that in Acts 3:22 on. Yet for context sake one needs to start reading further back to have an understanding of what Peter was saying to these people. He was telling them that through Moses’ writings, the prophets and such they should have known that this Jesus whom they crucified was the one foretold snd the one they all should hear. God is the one who restores all things. Please take the time to study look for yourself. God bless you!!

Just FYI, the Church of Jesus Christ as a whole is studying the New Testament this year, as we do every four years. We studied the Old Testament last year, as individuals, families, and congregations. As you converse with many Christians, you will find various different understandings of scripture, but we definitely do a lot of study for ourselves. The restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ in our time is one of the greatest blessings the world has known.

Joseph Smith performed a _three-fold_ restoration, restoring the gospel, the priesthood and the church of Christ. This is what Mormons refer as "the restoration." This is not to be confused with the "restitution of all things," which comes afterward, during the end times. The restitution of all things will be accomplished by the end-time Elias, which is the title of the _forerunner_ of Jesus Christ's Second Coming. (John the Baptist was the _forerunner_ of Jesus' First Coming and therefore was also given the title of Elias.) Neither John the Baptist nor Joseph Smith the seer restored all things, therefore neither one was the end-time Elias. The man that comes during the end times must complete his "all things" mission _before_ Jesus' Second Coming. Doctrine and Covenants 77:12 refers to that end-time servant's "all things" mission, and notice that the text specifically says that it must happen _before_ Christ returns. Thus the idea that Christ restores all things _after_ He comes is not correct. It happens before His coming and it will be performed not by Christ nor by the members of Christ's church working together, but by one, singular, miracle-working seer doing it all by himself. (Just as Christ worked out the atonement alone, so Elias will restore all things alone.) Now, as yet, this end-time man has not made his public appearance, therefore latter-day saints promote Joseph Smith's three-fold restoration until Elias shows up on the scene.

@@00Fisher00 There was no need for a restoration because the Church that Jesus established in the first century has been preserved throughout the centuries until today. If the LDS is the true church, what was the point of establishing a church in the first century that would collapse into apostasy two minutes later?
@00Fisher00
@00Fisher00 2 жыл бұрын
@@miqueasbello5382 Throughout the ages, God has called prophets and people have sometimes listened and sometimes turned to apostasy. It has been foretold in scripture many times. God gave us moral agency because He knows it's best for us, and even when we have turned away from Him, He is still there to invite us back. As I examine the religions of the world that have existed from the time of Christ, it's clear that His Church was lost. Early on, apostles gave guidance to the Church in the different regions, often correcting beliefs or practices that were not right. That's what we see a lot of in the epistles of the New Testament. The "rock" of revelation given to apostles was and still is crucial. But apostles were killed, banished, or otherwise driven off, and without apostles to lead them, the members of the Church continued making mistakes and corrupting the teachings of Christ. Over the centuries, residual Christianity adopted pagan culture and split into Orthodox and Roman Catholic chunks. Martin Luther and others realized that many things were incorrect about common Christian practices; after the protestant reformation, many people and many churches tried in some way to follow what Christ had given them, but without God's authority given to apostles and other leaders and thus without that rock that was so important. Joseph Smith found himself among many churches that did not agree and did not act in unity--the very existence of multiple churches with differences in doctrine and practice indicates a lack of the unity that Christ and the early apostles taught--and so he went to ask God about it. He was given the task of restoring what Christ had started. I am blessed to be able to see what the restored Church of Jesus Christ does today, and what I feel most toward God about it is gratitude; to give us so much shows that He is so very merciful toward us. I don't expect anyone to simply take my word for it, but I know that you or anyone else can do the same thing that Joseph Smith did and go to God in prayer. One of the most common messages in scripture is "seek, and ye shall find." God wants to answer us. Jesus knew that there would be false prophets in our time and warned us of them in Matthew 7:15-20, but rather than telling us that there would be no true prophets, he gave us a key to discern the true from the false. As he said in verses 16 and 20, we will "know them by their fruits." Among the fruits of Joseph Smith were the translation of the Book of Mormon and the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ. I know these fruits. I have studied the Book of Mormon, I have worshipped and served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I have heard the words of modern prophets. I've asked God in prayer, and many times I have received His witness of these things. I know that they are good fruits. My hope is that you and anyone else will come to know the same thing. I invite you to begin learning about the Church of Jesus Christ by visiting ComeUntoChrist.org or ChurchOfJesusChrist.org. The first site is intended for people who are new to the Church, while the second has many resources that are more intended for Church members. Feel free to read the Book of Mormon for yourself. Feel free to worship with latter-day saints at our meetinghouses or in our homes. We are imperfect people, but the faithful among us strive to be true disciples of Christ, and I promise you that if you earnestly seek, you will find the fruits to be good. If you do not want to, then I still wish you the best, but I hope you will open your heart to what God has given us in our day.

Passages about people seeing God can be confusing, especially given the multiple other passages that describe them seeing Him. True prophets, including Joseph Smith, aren't in competition with God and haven't claimed to be Him or His Son, but rather testify of Them and have parts to play in doing Their work. Thankfully, Joseph Smith restored the original gospel and has helped the world to understand it despite centuries of confusion. Hopefully that helps clear up your concerns a bit. May I ask you about your beliefs? It's clear that you study from the Bible as I do. I know why I consider the Bible to contain God's word, but why do you?

Let's break this down. _But though we_ ...We, meaning the apostles of Christ, including Paul. _Or an angel from heaven_ ...Or *EVEN IF* an angel from heaven. Angel=messenger Heaven=God So, even if a messenger from God So, even if it means Moroni, he *was* an angel from heaven, or a messenger from God. And God doesn't send angels with messages that are not from Him. _Preach any other gospel unto you_ ...If you read the second chapter of Galatians, you will see what the "other gospel" Paul was referring to and it has nothing to do with Moroni or the Book of Mormon, etc. And what is "Gospel"? It is the good news of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Context.

@@lindaldsJohn already had an angle of heaven come down to him and tell him that God would send down an angle of heaven in the last days to preach his everlasting gospel to all the planet (note, not another gospel, but the everlasting gospel the angle of heaven would be preaching.). So the everlasting gospel was not going to be preached by those carrying around a Bible. That's not how the everlasting gospel was going to be preached.. Its going to be preached instead by an angle that God would send and that angle would have a Sealed Book in his possession containing the everlasting gospel within it,the same sealed book Isaiah saw in Isaiah Chapter 29. That angle would hand the book over to a man called Joseph Smith to translate it. He would translate the unsealed portion of the book and give it out to the people to read and their eyes would be opened and they would come out of darkness and obscurity and come to knowledge of the truth and they who murmured shall learn doctrine.. So you got a problem in your own interpretation of Galatians. Paul wasn't condemning John's latter-day prophecy because Paul knew there would be a restitution of all things that would occur in the last days. That is why the angle was sent with the everlasting gospel to begin the restoration. But Paul warned the Galatians for following another gospel by another angle in his time because he knew the everlasting gospel would not be restored back to earth not until the latter days which was shown clearly in vision to John what God was planning to do with the everlasting gospel in the latter-days.

I am glad we find alignment in this core doctrine. One question that others have wrestled with, though, in reference to Isaiah 43 is that Jesus Christ is also God. I don't get how the apostasy happened in the first place. The Bible talks about how God did many powerful plagues and miracles. He turned a tribe of nomads into a superpower nation. Time and time again, he showed his people that it was his power that saved them, not the strength of men. But the God of the LDS church couldn't preserve the early church for more than a generation. Their God waited 1700 years for human politicians to develop religious freedom laws before he restored the church. There certainly weren't religious freedom laws when Israel was dealing with pagan nations, but they still thrived. Why should anyone follow the LDS god when it seems just as weak as gods made of wood or stone that have to rely on human power?

There was more than one period of apostasy. In several centuries before the birth of Christ, for example, there was a general lack of prophets. As to why people should follow God, it is simply this: because you pray to Him and He answers you. As you read the Book of Mormon and pray about it, God will testify of the truth of the book and of the restored Church through the Holy Ghost.

@@00Fisher00 periods of apostasy? Yes. A total apostasy? No. I have read the book of mormon, and I have prayed about it. And I found it to not be true. It doesn't even teach what the lds church currently teaches.

@@CaBaum23 Maybe you're not thinking of the actual Book of Mormon. We study from the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and additional scripture all the time, and we teach from all of that scripture. We could get into details about the word "apostasy" and its meaning, but the basic idea is that the authority of God has been lost from the Earth at times. In our day, it has been restored, and God does His work in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have seen so much good that is being done through the Church, and I am grateful for it.

19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. so joseph smith may God have mercy on your soul

The verse you quote is from the book of Revelation, written by the Apostle John. He was referring only to the book of Revelation (the words of the book of this prophecy), not to the entire Bible. In fact, the Bible as we know it was not compiled until the 3rd Century A.D. Even the book of St. John, written by the same author, most biblical scholars agree that he wrote it after he wrote the book of Revelation. An ancient prophet on this continent, Nephi, also saw the same things the Apostle John saw, and he testified of Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem. But when he reached the "end of the world" part of what he saw, he wrote that the Spirit of the Lord forbade him from writing about it: "And I looked and beheld a man, and he was dressed in a white robe. And the angel said unto me: Behold one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Behold, he shall see and write the remainder of these things; yea, and also many things which have been. And he shall also write concerning the end of the world. Wherefore, the things which he shall write are just and true; and behold they are written in the book which thou beheld proceeding out of the mouth of the Jew; and at the time they proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, or, at the time the book proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, the things which were written were plain and pure, and most precious and easy to the understanding of all men. And behold, the things which this apostle of the Lamb shall write are many things which thou hast seen; and behold, the remainder shalt thou see. But the things which thou shalt see hereafter thou shalt not write; for the Lord God hath ordained the apostle of the Lamb of God that he should write them." I hope this helps. I know that my Father in Heaven lives, and loves me. I know that Jesus is the Christ. I am thankful to Them for providing another witness of the Savior's majesty and love. I know, by the power of the Holy Ghost, that the Book of Mormon is the Word of God, and will lead those who seriously study the book to live better lives.

Hi Luke, thanks for your question. The practice of polygamy is strictly prohibited in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and has been for over a century. No person can practice plural marriage and remain a member of the Church. You can learn more here: newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/topic/polygamy
