This special report covers the recent completion of the restoration of the Memorial to the Six Million at the Atlanta Jewish Cemetery. The restoration was finalized just in time for the annual Yom HaShoah ceremony, adding significant meaning to this year's Holocaust remembrance event.
The Memorial to the Six Million, designed and funded by Holocaust Survivors in 1964, stands as Georgia's oldest Holocaust memorial and a vital site for Holocaust education. The restoration was organized and managed by Karen Lansky Edlin, President of Eternal Life-Hemshech.
Key restoration efforts include:
Installing new gas lines for the six torches representing the Six Million murdered Jews
Upgrading to an electric spark igniting system for the torches
Cleaning and waxing bronze plaques
Regrouting and repointing stonework
Enhancing the surrounding landscape
This year's ceremony featured a speech by Senator Jon Ossoff, who emphasized the importance of remembering and learning from the past. Additionally, George Rishfeld, a child Holocaust survivor, was the key speaker, sharing his powerful and poignant story with attendees.
The Memorial was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 21, 2008, recognizing its historical significance. Honoring the legacy of the Survivors by ensuring this Memorial remains a place of reflection and education is crucial.
