It's so great to see them restoring 4420. I really love all those yard goats and critters, there's a certain charm about them. It's a great project for a small group with minimal resources at their disposal. Luckily she's in great shape, too. Excellent public relations for Union Pacific donating the round house rather then demolishing. This structure PERFECT example for train show & railroad museum! Is the steam switcher just having cosmetic restoration with intention to restore to running condition? Great that the turntable is restored to operation! The outside track structure if brought back to use perfect for steamers use as intended, plus what ever other equipment on site. This video brings back a sad memory. I was a long time member & recording secretary of the long gone NTHS ( Newfoundland Transportation Historical Society ) a group dedicated to preservation of all forms of transport with no fixed museum location. After the highly sucessfull joint project with Canadian National Railway for the August 1981 centennial train ( I was lucky to travel on the train ) to celebrate starting construction of the 42 inch narrow gauge line talks began for a permanent location next to the St. John's railway station CN offered to donate title free the ex passenger stores commersary building. round house, & turntable with all track structure , also the land. Legal paper work was completed awaiting signature. At the last moment CN demanded excessive ground rent. That ended the project! In September 1988 the entire rail network was abandoned with only a few buildings remaining to this day including the former headquarters station building in St. John's. Today there is a small railway museum on the ground floor A FAR CRY FROM WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN. Too my knowledge Canadian Pacific Railway has better attitude to support railway history preservation. Had the project happened the society most likely would still exist today!!!
@ToyManTelevision3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. And wow! They are planning to run 4420. Not a lot of track but out to the turntable and about 1/4 mile to the depot. Where they have the restored depot and about 4 other historical structures. One the “Jos House” is a rebuilt “temple”. Jos House is a small Chinese temple. Anyway the Chinese workers built it in 1869 and it’s been rebuilt. They are trying to get two huge UP locos as well for static display inside.

@@ToyManTelevision Thanks for reply! Great news that the shunter will return to operation, also running on the 1/4 mile trackage ( it's a start ). In 1985 on behalf of the society accepted special invitation from Canadian Pacific Railway ( roughly 130 across Canada ) to attend the centennial of the driving of the last spike at Cragaellachie British Columbia November 7th. Guests traveled from Revelstoke to the site on a special steam train there a special chartered Via Rail train would return guests to Calgary whom opted out of spending extra day/night at Revelstoke. I opted to stay Several run bye's were staged on return to Revelstoke. My very special souvenior a set of train orders for the crew of both trains. The late Omer Lavallee corporate historian of Canadian Pacific ( a special friend ) arranged to have a extra set done for me. It was a surprise to me to say the least ! I was the only guest to get these train orders! I was very lucky to be involved with two railway centennial's in my life time ! I miss the sound of trains but I shot a number video tapes during last months of operation of our railway on board freight trains to Clarenville a division point & return to St. John's a distance of 130 miles. I at this time when news spread thought North America on closing I was the only railway buff granted permission to do so. In addition shot video's of the locomotive & car shop before & after dismantling. I enjoy watching progress on both your layouts especially narrow gauge! All of the wheels on the 4420 were seized up. Their solution to get it into the roundhouse was to grease up the rails on the track and slide it in. As it moved the wheels on the tender slowly broke free and started to roll, however the drivers never freed up at all.
