When you hit an area before and after you do a weld repair to temporarily protect it, is this a rattle can and what kind of paint?
@Mikefngarage Жыл бұрын
whatever I have around. paint the backside. I was removing the outer section later. So I dont eve know if I did it at that time. I did it when I removed the outer section. only used it to line up the inner.

I have been doing body and paint work since 1975, You're methods and standards are perfectly fine. If cars were made out of stainless steel we would not have to worry.
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
yea these are regular standards not the Uber standards of so many restore shops that guys are paying super huge dollars to have. So many guys are afraid of doing their own work because the see these over the top restorations and think they cant do it. So somebody needs to take the heat of the negative comments and teach what can be done and work.

Food for thought, Mustie1 says to keep c02 blowing on weld while its still red. keeps impurities out of the weld. so he says. But what can I say, I can hardly weld at all.:) I am impressed with your work. After watching these vans get a second chance at life, I'd like to have one.

Ok disclaimer: Im a noob at body work but why didnt you treat the metal behind the door before welding on the klassic fab green repair piece? School me please
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
yea and painted it. but what your seeing will be painted after I am done. everything behind is painted. just spray caned black and if there is any rust that is sprayed or brushed with rust converter.

Of course a whole vehicle made of folded metal rusts from every unseen spot after 50 years shop class in 1967 taught me that, no zinc coat on that tin.
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
yea some of the newer cars are made with electro galvanized sheet metal which has a electrolysis zinc put on the surface and is still paintable. That is what I use for my patches.

that has not been my experience with rust converter. I have tested them on stuff left outside for many years and no future rust after paint. If applied correctly it does work. Tested on stuff for 10 to 20 years personally no rust.

Aren't there a dozen or more of these rust killers? How do we know which are the ones that really do the job?
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
every one I have tried has worked. make sure they have tannic acid or phosphoric acid. and they say they stop rust dead. The one I used from amazon seems to me like the strongest acid compound. in it. search amazon rust converter. watch out for encapsulates rust they dont work.

Is the problem that you are using a component designed for butt welding and not overlapping ? changing your approach would likely save you much time and getting a better end result ...Just asking , I do acknowledge your philosophy towards repairs ..Just thinking of time saving !

He is bending the underside down to leave a level finish. The advantage is its fast and doesn't cause excessive heat on the pannels.
@alexjinks61724 жыл бұрын
@@Paulman50 I'm hearing what you're saying but possible you are not understanding the component specifications are not designed for the type of fitting Mike is doing ! Be interesting to hear from Mike
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
Those panels dont fit either way. what i am doing is a compromise between the aftermarket panel fitment and time saving. Doors shut well I have done several sets. those panels are not designed very well to fit perfect anyway. look at the bends on the top edge of the green metal it does not line up with the other inner panels. there are ears that dont belong on them Plus they dont share the same radius as the doors. they are made flat. I show this in future videos on the cargo doors and rocker fitment. There are better ones at wolfsburg west from the UK. But cost more money. Either butt welding them in or doing like I do ends up in the same results with those Klassic fab panels. Somewhat fitting but not really.
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
plus the way I do it is stronger. the metal is very thin on the inner panels. Just How I chose to do it.
