My favorite part was when you swapped out the rusted watch with whole different one during the "cleaning" process. That was amazing. I mean, it's the best way to get rid of the pitting and delamination. Oh and getting everything shiny without a polishing wheel. Top notch work!

He ordered 2 cheap Chinese made watches , put one outside for a month while he took the new one apart and put the balance in a bag to make it look like he ordered it, (they don't come in a plastic baggie) cleaned some of the parts of the dirty watch then did the old bait and switch with the new watch and parts and put it back together. This is probably what he does with every "restoration" $40 for 100k views.
@Thehorologicalone3 жыл бұрын
It was entertaining to watch but I quickly spotted the old bait and switch, then this video became very disappointing. Those cheap Chinese movements would be scrapped at the site of any rust, nor could they be recovered from such water ingress and corrosion.

Where to start... Well it isn't bad for a first attempt, but it certainly wont win you any prizes, and the watch wont run well. 1) The watch didn't get any lubrication. All that cleaning will have removed some of the dirt, but it will also have removed all of the oils and greases. 2) The mainspring was not removed from the barrel and cleaned. I've got a little bit of experience here, so I know what I'm talking about, If this watch had genuinely been in the water long enough to look like that, then the mainspring will be rusted in to the barrel. It needs to be removed from the barrel and at the very least, cleaned, lubricate, and re-inserted into the barrel, but most likely if it is in that state, the mainspring will need replaced. 3) Very important. Any competent watch maker would re-fit the hands at the 12 O'clock position to ensure they line up correctly. If there is a date complication, you need to wind the mechanism to midnight so that the date just clicks over, then fit the hands at the 12 O'clock position. 4) The balance is usually sold as a balance. Not as a balance and balance bridge with jewel. You unscrew the retaining stud from the old balance, remove it from the bridge, and fit the new balance. Fair enough you *might* be able to source the balance and bridge from a scrap movement, but mostly, they come as a "balance complete" which is just the balance on the balance staff with the hairspring. In some cases, you can source the balance, hairspring and balance staff as separate items. 5) The balance jewels were not cleaned. 6) The other jewels were not cleaned. 7) Did I mention. Watches need to be oiled. This includes the balance jewels. Both of them. They need to be removed, cleaned, oiled and re-installed. Not an easy task. You need to remove the shock springs, remove the jewels, split them into the two parts, clean the through hole jewel, lubricate the top of the non pierced jewel, re-assemble them, refit them and then refit the shock spring. 8) You need to test the watch with a time grapher, or time graphing software to set it back in beat and set the rate. If you want to see an automatic Chinese standard movement like this, being serviced for real, and a whole lot of other watch repair techniques, you should check out Mark Lovick's channel on KZbin. kzbin.infoabout This is not a criticism, I'm simply pointing this out in case you, or anybody watching wants to improve their skills in this field.
@AndyHullMcPenguin3 жыл бұрын
In case you are struggling to find the Chinese standard automatic watch I'm referring to then this "Starking" branded watch is pretty similar, though it does include a date complication. There are some other Chinese movements there too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpCol5SobKmfr9k Also watch the Chinese "Seagull" movement videos.

Andrew - you’re giving him more credit than he deserves with your in-depth critique. This is not a restoration video, as I’m sure someone with your level of knowledge is well aware. This is designed to fool people with no knowledge of horology and is to restoration what clickbait news is to real journalism...
@AndyHullMcPenguin3 жыл бұрын
@@dmhor7389 If anyone came here to see how this *should* be done, then my comment was intended to assist them. That includes the original poster of the video. It does take time and effort to create content, and to my mind, any comment about that content should be positive, even if you have doubts about the authenticity of what you are watching. I could have simply gone off on a rant about everything that is wrong with the video, but that doesn't really help anyone, particularly those people who are watching in the hope of gaining insight into how to service a watch correctly.

Oh please... The mainspring hasn’t been removed and cleaned, the inside of the barrel would mean it would likely never work again in that condition, no ultrasonic bath, no apparent pitting or damage left by all that rust (you do realise rust = damage?!), no lubricants whatsoever in the reassembly - not even a greased gasket (what oiling chart did you use?), the crystal is flawless after a wee wash and the watch case shines like new without the aid of a polishing mop - and that’s just for starters. Not to mention ‘rust’ on a stainless steel back!! I wonder what a true artist like The Nekkid Watchmaker would make of this fairytale? So many questions. You did not show 3/4 of the process, what were all the parts you actually replaced? What was the lubrication process? Where is the time graph? Did you really expect us to believe that you just happened to find this rebuildable skeletonized automatic on a Sunday morning stroll? How is the gold plating so pristine after all that rust? What an interesting procedure you have for "Casing" the movement. Your video is missing basic process fundamentals that even armature watchmakers or DIY modders use.
