For the skeptics. This is indeed not permanent, it is a coating. However it is a long lasting coating. Depending on the quality, up to a year and a half. Good ceramic coatings last longer up to five years for the best ones. The only way to restore the plastic is a heat gun. The plastic gets discolored because the oils found in this petroleum based product get washed away from years of exposure. Heat brings this oil back to the surface restoring color. After restoration, I apply Diamond Pro Tech 36 month coating. They also have a 5 year and 10 year coating.
@harry554 Жыл бұрын
So what you just use a heat gun to melt your trim off? Just kidding but this option seems like wayyy less effort for way cheaper than the products you suggested. Remember this is for flipping cars not restoring our personal vehicle.

I followed the instructions for the heat gun method on my 2004 Volvo V70, and the trim looked fantastic for about 3 months. By a year later, it looked just as faded as if I had never used the heat gun. I ended up using gloss black vinyl wrap on the trim, and two years later, it still looks like new.
@timmillwood1585 Жыл бұрын
Repeated use of the heat gun will cause the plastics to become brittle and crack since your drawing the oils out of the plastics to the surface and they get backed off over time. Best solution is to just paint your plastic trim. Speaking from someone who own a 03 Avalanche with body cladding I know from experience 😂 lots of trim to restore every 3-6 months

I restored all the trim using a propane torch. One direction NEVER pausing and NOT back and forth direction. Keep tip just close enough so flame barely touches. Trim hot, but cool enough to be able to touch with finger tips. I tried a heat gun but a natural flame brought out a deeper black. Turtle Wax after and again when vehicle needs waxing. Five years later, still looking new. I was so impressed with the results I tried it on those plastic green patio chairs followed with a coat of Turtle Wax. Same results. 👍 Remember, One direction with flame. Never back-forth as you could warp or possibly burn.
@joeymcguire8742 Жыл бұрын
This can be a decent solution for cosmetic pieces, but I wouldn’t want to rely on it for physical properties. The heat does change the chemical composition and properties of plastic. Heat is a “temporary” solution that will likely revert back to the condition prior to heating in a couple years with the added feature of making the plastic more brittle and subject to physical damage.

New subscriber, and appreciate your video style. No fluff, just stuff -- stuff we need to know. TIP: When using wet/dry sandpaper from a full sheet, tear the sheet in half, horizontally. Fold the half-sheet in thirds. This optimizes each of the three folded panels for full use and provides thickness for padding as you sand. (Having worked in an auto body shop for years and wet-sanded more cars than I want to think about, I can vouch that this tip will save a little time but a lot of sandpaper.

I've been a believer in Stoner Trim Shine for awhile with this sort of gray plastic trim that turns all chalky. But it'll last awhile and go right back the way it was. I have this sort of gray plastic stuff on the rockers and bumper covers and rear step of my minivan so might have to try it out...if I ever see it again...sad that the transmission shop I took it to lost all their employees and the one guy has been trying to do everything himself. He just hired two more guys so maybe this will be the month I get it back. So Florida, eh? How many cars can you sell in a year before the state gets mad at you and demands you obtain a license? It's like 4 cars here in Oklahoma.

Thanks for the video. I have to point out though that the trim was never ‘pitch white’. @@americanmade7231 It is all marketing wank. Using content creators to promote their products to make it seem like it is something special. Graphene is not designed for this. Crushing it and adding it for pigmentation. Then firing up the marketing machine and sell a product at a premium. I give the manufacture credit for at least stating how long it will last... I bet even that is a generous estimate. It's like when all these oil additive companies started adding Teflon. DuPont had to finally come out and state the product was not designed for lubrication, and after enough lawsuits the manufactures backed away when they could no longer make a buck.
