I know this is a real engine and therefore FAR more intricate than any game, but I have fallen in love with Car Mechanic Simulator 2018. It's given me an appreciation for the basics (I can now identify most parts of a car engine/brakes/suspension by sight), and insight into how difficult the job you're doing here really is. That straight 6 is going to be gorgeous once rebuilt.

That cover is like a jewel. It should be on the outside of the car LOL. Just an idea. Consider some simple portable folding tables for parts layout as you do this kind of work often. It will help save your back (you only get one). I'm also a big fan of large and small magnetic trays; as you're breaking a component down It saves searching the floor (or the engine bay for 3 small bolts that just vanished under the engine. A really useful item is a few gravel trays from a garden centre (they are cheep and have a lip so they keep oil and other fluids from spreading).

Thanks, Plunder, great advice. I'll be buying some of both!

It’s been 10 years that I did a rebuilt of a M20 engine. Heavy as hell but man it is a very simple engine to work on. The only thing that will fail is a head gasket and a throttle body sensor. The M50B25 was a far more better engine in any way though and there is a possibility to get it in your E30 😉 standard 190hp instead of 170hp too.

Awesome job.... one little advice, use ethanol with 1% benzotriazole diluted in, and put all the aluminum parts in for a few days _ one week max after cleaning (in a big basin so the parts are submerged). This will get a nice protection of the surface like a cement, without changing the coulour of aluminum. Of course you can paint after if you want but even not painted it will hold nicely. I have used this on a Focke Wolf 190 A8 wheel that was 70 years old. For surfacing sandblasting with glassbeads makes a great deal on aluminum surface.

Try drain cleaner (Lye) for cleaning non critical aluminium surfaces. Paint it on with an old brush & rinse off with clean water. You have to be quick & don't breath the fumes. It etches the surface slightly & you can spray direct. If you leave it too long it will eat away the whole thing. :D
