New lead dress on both I.F. Transformers and tackling a few capacitors and resistors along the way.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
In the second episode, replacing a few capacitors and resistors before discovering the I.F. Transformers lead dress issue that needs to corrected.
------------------------------------------------------------------
In the first episode, preparing to restore this beautiful Grunow (General Household Utilities Co.), Model 654, Chassis 6N from 1937. The cabinet is very unique being a Table Upright; looks like a mini console covering two bands, i.e., the BC (550-1750) kHz and SW (2000-7000) kHz. The I.F. Frequency is 465 kHz.
The schematic: Riders 8-19, 20.
The receiver tube complement:
6K7G - RF Amplifier
6A8G - 1st Detector/Oscillator
6K7G - I.F. Amplifier
6Q7G - 2nd Detector/A.V.C. & Audio Amplifier
6F6G - Power Output
80 - Full-Wave Rectifier

Looking good, Don! Replacing the faded old leads with new ones having the correct, original colors is a nice touch! These older, larger IF transformers with trim caps on top, I think, were a better design than the newer, smaller ones with the adjustable ferrite inductors and those internal sheet capacitors that invariably develop silver-mica disease. It is my thinking that this later evolution (or devolution) was a cost-cutting measure in the later postwar AA5 receivers.

Chet - definitely should be safer to operate once I get to that point in the restoration with the new lead wires in place. I agree, the later I.F. Transformers were (are) inferior as compared to the ones from this era. Thanks again for reaching out and following the series. Best, Don

No wires were removed from their stock position only replaced . They are where they are because of something called lead dressing. Good stuff Don as I don't see many vids on this and lots of guys end up with a vintage radio with crumbling wires going into IF transformers. Do them one at a time and use written notes and photos of where they went exactly before tackling wire replacement. If you don't do this right you can get into problems with hum, whistling, squealing or low volume as you tune the dial. Found that in the book Elements of Radio Servicing , it's one of my favorites.

Thanx for the video Don. Would you please tell us where you purchased that 'capacitor checker' for determining the 'outside foil' connection? Bless Your Bunions!
