When you said you can mess up a knife quick when you are messing with the pins. I just fixed a knife that took me a while to get right when I reset the pins, first to tight then too loose. I would have installed the bale band pinned it like you did, but would have only peened the pin to hold everything tightly leaving just a bit of slack to allow the bale to move freely. At any rate I’m a recent follower and really enjoy your content. I especially like your flea market finds and bartering. 😉 It would great to meet you someday. I have one of these but the blade says 1983. I found it in a scrap car when I worked at a salvage yard. I cleaned it , oiled it and sharpened it. Looks new

Those of us who carried these during Viet Nam hated the clasp as it got in the way and there was no place to attach it and it was always in the way when trying to use it. A little hard to sharpen and keep an edge but was a great knife!

Research how to make that doubleheaded pin so you can put that attachment ring/hoop back on . Knife looks great .

Excellent job man! She’s back in fine working order. Trying to reinstall that loop on the end would have been a nightmare. Machining a step rivet and hammering the steps separately with hand tools just isn’t feasible. Plus, I’ve always found those loops on pocket knives to be useless and in the way. My father’s knife like that didn’t have the loop on it. Not sure if he took it off or it was made without one. Either way, excellent work my friend!

I also noticed that the main blade is riding a little high! You need to grind down the kick a little bit to lower the tip of the blade! 👍

What about getting some tiny stainless or brass washers to put in between the bail and the liners? I’m thinking about the kinds of little washers that are inside small radios or electronics. Maybe something to keep in mind for future repairs.

Tip: Next time you have an issue with a blade not snapping closed, try putting a spare thin blade between the blade and the center and giving it a little tap into the knife. Shouldn't take much to get the blade to "walk and talk".

You may have figured out the double headed pin by now but the make a double headed nail maybe you could utilize that somehow to make uswe as a pin except would only be on one side of the knife and assume that feature is on both sides of the knife??

How that was made.... It started as a double ended pointed pin. The pin - after assembly - was "shaved". Basically taking an .083 wire down to about .082 +/-. What you saw after removing the clevis was the shaved part of the wire now holding the butt of the knife together. The clevis was added and then the pin was "spun" to form the head of the wire holding the clevis on.
