Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Removing The Basement Floor (Pt. 1)

My mansion needs a new basement. Today I am attempting to remove the old, broken basement floor. I break concrete, remove huge piles of dirt, jack hammer, drive heavy equipment, run a demolition saw, and rent one of the most useful machines I have ever used.

A suggestion Cole and Nave, make it easy to walk in the basement. Have a washer and dryer in the basement that is just for the clothes used around chemicals. Have a washer and dryer on the 1st or 2nd floor for your normal clothes. My mom and dad did this. In our farming community I grew up in, my family is the only family not affected by cancer. I believe some of the reason is because my mom was so careful of the farm clothes vs normal clothes. She always had my dad undress in the garage, take a shower in the basement, wash all farm clothes together and was careful with anything with the farm chemicals. She was an OSHA representative for Ft. Leavenworth. She would go to classes and training about chemicals often. Many chemicals can cause cancer, other diseases and cause birth defects.

On our family farm, you’d walk in the back door and immediately go to the basement, strip, and shower. An old fashioned wringer washer for work clothes, always line dried, even in winter. Boots were always kept outside. We went completely organic in 72 because my uncle died suddenly, and my aunt, who was also a nurse, was convinced it was because of chemicals. No treated seed either. So even though the land is rented out now, it is chemical-free, and the soil is tested 2-3 times per year to make sure it stays that way. Northwestern Illinois.

Thats bullshit, in my family there is no cancer in the arable/sprayed crops but only in the organic dairy family!

Roman is the main team player he knows his stuff what can go through the hole or not. The basement floor being uneven thickness of concrete makes it even harder to get it done faster. Hopefully day to goes a little better.

Hey Cole! Great job keep up the good work. I would recommend tearing out the stairs and the blocks around the stairs now while you have the rental skid loader. Looks like there is a ton of dirt and debris that would need to be removed and much easier while you have the equipment.

@@w8stral I don't think there is any question about that being true at this point, However, the whole point is that Cole wanted to at least have the frame of his great grandparents. To him obviously that holds a lot of value.

What a job! You guys are knocking it out. I've never seen anyone that is so amazingly strong and yet a teddy bear in nature as Roman. He is a rock solid fellow. Love how Justin and he get it going and with your input and ok, they work their job....man what a team the three of you make. I am in total agreement with the ppl that suggested the work clothing and etc being washed in a separate washer and dryer down in the basement. My hubby's diesel and gas spilled clothing is unreal and the entire laundry room smells horrible when he has to be working on his machines. I am all for separate equipment to wash those in. If used in the dryer everything picks up that odor........not healthy at ALL. Better yet switch out that laundry in the shop and put a shower in there before you even come into the home...... $$$ but safety! Rock on guys and hang in there............a fantastic job you are all doing!

Bobcat is the brand, not the type of machine. It’s called a ride-on, or stand on tracked skid steer. People do refer to it as a Dingo as well. That’s actually the trade name that Toro uses for their stand on tracked skid steer.

First machine you saw at the rental yard was a stump grinder. The stand on skid steer was the perfect option for the job. Saved so much time. Hoped you would have rented some exhaust fans to deal with the gas odours. Also, if you get the point sharpened for your jack hammer, it will work much faster. Keep up the great work fellas! * Are you finishing the basement (installing heated floors)? If so would you keep that opening and put French doors in for so much extra light? Or a huge window!

Before pouring the concrete floor, it would be good to put down a layer of thick plastic. It will help keep the moisture in the ground from coming through the concrete. It is even better if you are going to use the basement as living space.

My dad dug the entire basement under my moms house by hand with a shovel. He used an old auger from the farm and scooped the dirt into the auger and up and out to the old dump truck, which looked just like yours. It took him 4 years to dig it out and pour the footing and wall 4 feet at a time.

Cole you guys make me feel ashamed. I’ve never seen workers like you all. You never slack off, you’re always at it hard. Where do you get the drive? I’ve been following you since you got home from college and started cleaning up the farm. And every time I’m just amazed at how far you’ve come. I do know you’ve had tons and tons of help, from daddy cornstar and momma and Cooper and Summer and Nave. And now Roman and Justin are practically your left and right arms. I think I’m lazy to a degree but work against it as best as I can. I wish I had the same level of “get to it” that you do. I can’t hardly wait to see the house all done. With its rolling green expanse of a front yard and it’s wrap around porch. It’s going to be so gorgeous. Take care! I love your family!!
