In this video I restore a Wagner made Griswold mold cast iron dutch oven. The lid was in fairly good shape, but the pot itself had a lot of rust and old seasoning inside of it. It was stripped down, cleaned of the rust, and re-seasoned.

OK, nice one, but , before seasoning, I would have rinsed it in *clear* water and dried with a *clean* towel, not that filthy one... ;-) as it is supposed to contain food

But when it’s baked and seasoned the oil forms an almost glass like seal

Sorry.. but the best restoration for cast iron is 'White Vinegar'. Takes about 5 days.. then crub with a wire brush.. rinse, vegitable oil coat or lard.. heat, and coat again and then smoke it. This is 200 year old knowledge.. But white vinegar is hands free.. sorry to bust your bubble.

The vinegar damages the iron. Can make it porous and if kept in too long can pit it and even dissolve it. Do not use this as a restoration method.

@@TheRussianWoodworker My family has done it for generations. Never had a problem. So I'll continue to do it. Soaking time only depends on how much rust. But if it's rusty, then shame on you.
