Restoring a Gravel Driveway with Box Scrapers

Gravel Driveway Restoration & Regrading: How To Guide Using a 3 pt Box Scraper & Pull Type Box Blade. Plenty of action shots as well as BEFORE & AFTER drone footage of how to restore a gravel driveway for my neighbor using a 3 point hitch mounted box blade on the John Deere 755 and a pull type grader box behind my John Deere 316. I outline my 4 step approach to rejuvenating a stone driveway to freshen up the edges and blend in some new stone with the old stone. This is a good method to practice for driveway maintenance, driveway repairs or rebuilding your existing driveway. I also provide a bunch of tips and techniques for using the homemade pull type hydraulic box blade or pull type grader box when you want to regrade your driveway.

I've watched I bet 20 videos on scraping and resurfacing your gravel or limestone driveway you've not only explained the most throrally but your finished product was also the most asteically pleasing. I have 100 ft of driveway out to my polebarn and also my driveway it's our first house with that much of driveway and it's got be scraped and stone added. I have a box blade and 6ft finish blade for my massey 135 but I can really use both when It comes to tearing stuff up but the finish work I'm awfully your video gave me some confidence cause i know someone who had the drawbar finish scraper you leveled the driveway with. What a good video thank for making it.

This is good knowledge and quality work...I trick I've learned running big construction loaders like john Deere j210 or Case 530/580 is if you have a hydraulic top link and a float mode on your 3 point set the 3piont in float and adjust your grade with the top link you can pull material and spread it in one pass and speeds up rough grade work and gets you gang close to an almost finished grade.

I liked your discussion on the 3-point Box Blade and how it's hard to work with it on a bumpy road. I had the same problem and thought it was just me. I started to back the box blade and push the gravel vs pulling it. That worked much better. I still need to put down more gravel in the driveway and I liked your comments on ripping up the old before applying new. I will do that. Thanks!

@@Staki6908 I'd say $1000 is the average. You can find super nice ones for $1500 or worn out ones for $650. I always go for the ones that have some attachments and you can get a good deal usually.

@@gavinstraight2187 Good eye. Yes, this one happens to be a 316 but I have 3 other 318s so I often lump them all by saying "318". Actually, this 316 is my Frankenstein tractor. It has a 25 hp Robin Subaru engine in it and it is much more powerful than any of my other Onan powered tractors. There's a very old video on this channel of the Robin engine running in the tractor right after I got it done.

Great work! Love the pull type box, makes a great finish. I got some great info. I noticed in one video you compacted by driving the 755 over the drive. I find if I do that with a loaded bucket I get much better compaction. Also I back drag with the bucket down just lifting the front axle up and using a slight down angle seems to work good. And your absolutely right about cutting the hard pack out. Your the only guy I've seen do that and it's a must otherwise it's like dumping salt on a glass table, new material will just push out to the edge.

My family farms and we have a larger pull type box scraper. We use it behind a 120 hp tractor. We use it on our driveway and road when we have rough conditions due to rain . Nice job very well detailed and well planed .

Appreciate it Anthony. Those bigger ones are terrific as well. You can actually move some material around too I bet when you've got enough horses to load that box full. When I was doing full time excavating we had a 12' box that we pulled with a 1468 International and it was the best tool we had for finish grading. An alternative to the pull type grader if a guy doesn't want to or can't build one is a land plane. I do gravel driveways with my JD 5075E and 1025R using the loader and box blade exactly like you, the dropping the box blade and running the land plane. I have a hydraulic top link and can dial in the dual grader blades perfectly and quickly on the fly. Very easy to run and only need one tractor on the job. Yours does a nice job as well. Always more than one way to skin a cat.

There certainly is more than one way to do it. I have tried one of those planes before as well and I didn't have terrific luck with it but I didn't give it much of a chance either. I would like to have a bigger project where I can play with one. Having the hydraulic top link would make a big difference for sure. Appreciate the feedback Daniel and thanks so much for watching!

Hi Neil have looked at this video before but watched again and enjoyed more. Maybe you remember me commenting on your Bruno Build(Awesome). I have a 318 that I'm restoring and goinging back with the green with auto clear coat but with the larger tires exactlally like yours. I had the same problem as you with the bearings on front . I've got a '99 model with the metric and got a set of 1" wheels(older model but nice no rust)so had to get the metric bearings before I sprayed them and put the 18" 5 rib tires on. i have the awesome deck 50" with it so before taking off I wanted to save original tire sets both front and back. This tractor only has 750 hrs and runs awesome. Its a time piece but I cant help hot rodding I do on all my projects. I've put a 3-point hitch on it with a cat 1 catagory. I have a awesome dozer balde 54" redone but wanted a little more capibility with the three point hitch. I'm really looking at a small 48' Box Blade from Aignite less than 1000.00 shipped or possibly a Land Plane from Homestead Implements 48" for 1300.00. My project is just a fun hobby but I would be using it on two driveways in VA and NC. Any info on the box versus Land Plane would be appreciated? Thanks for all your great videos! John

Thanks so much for watching the videos. John! I've tried to land plane and didn't find that. I liked it as much as my pull type greater box. 3 point boxes work okay too but they just don't have the leveling ability that a pull type box has. If I had to choose only one between a 3-point box and a land plane, I would choose the box just because you have the ability to move more material with it, whereas the plane doesn't do that. The box blade is like a flat edge shovel and the plane is more like a rake.

I like your approach on recording your work from above, and later editing with comments for us the viewers, (as opposed to talking over the machinery as you work, and usually making up stuff on the fly just to fill time as you go along). You have obviously put a lot of time into reviewing your on site work after the fact, and editing your video with comments on reasons why you did what you did - that is an important thing for the typical DIY guys that don't have $50k of equipment, or tons of hours working experience. I was always told to spread out the driveways , and get them leveled, with doing circles your working all the fines outta your material, but I absolutely agree with ripping up the existing material. I got the same 755 minus the loader

That's true, some of the fines do settle out as you're grading in circles, but I actually like that in most scenarios. I like having some loose stone on top rather than the hard pack as it doesn't track up in your tires when wet as much. Some people may prefer to have the hard pack with fines in the top layer I suppose. Lots of variations for different situations I guess. Much if it depends on what type of stone you're working with too I guess. So glad to hear from another 755 owner. They really are a good tractor. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!

I'm working on my father in law's old 316 he left abandoned outside for about 18 years. I would love to build one of these box blades, as they have about 100 acres in maine with a rutted out gravel driveway. Very neat idea!

I'm not going to lie, i did circles, figure 8s, and north, south, east and west techniques with my rough field. Have 75hp, a 12ft disk and a drag behind it in hard dark clay. Before you couldn't drive through it. Shredding it took me in crawl gear at 1mph and still be slammed around in the cab. Now, you can break 10mph through the field with a small hopping feeling. Driving through with my 1 ton, ya its at 15-20mph and feels like a washboard road (traction control panicking and jerking). I will also add, my neighbors didn't believe it would work. Said i need bigger and 1 offered to bring a dozer and a huge rome disk from his company. I kindly passed. Took an extra 1000lbs on the disk and around 500lbs on the 12ft drag while the tractor was in 4x4 but it worked great in the end. Neighbors dont say s*** to my as determination makes things happen. Circles, and working the material around in different directions helps a lot on smoothing. Only cost me 50 gallons of diesel, 36hrs, my neighbor a new disc axle (barrowed disc that the end nuts fell off and the disc blade destroyed the threads) and me for my new to me used 80s disc. Cheap price to pay since now i offer land smoothing and shredding.

I use an old township blade behind a tractor. I pull everything to the center from the sides then work it back out and then put a crown in the driveway so the water can flow to the side of the driveway into the lawn

That is certainly a great approach. It is difficult to do the crowning sometimes with this setup unless you just build up the center first and then grade. Thanks for checking out the video!

I recently purchased a property with a 700' long gravel road that is shared with a couple neighbors that say they hate me lol .. it doesn't help that the road is full of potholes and ruts , looking for a solution to smooth everything out (including my relationship with the neighbors) lol I think i need the heavy ripper box blade to break up the many years of built up gravel, and it seems that a lightweight pull behind would also be great for the finesse and finish.. Oh yes, this 'ole girl is still my main workhorse. What might surprise some people though is that it has a 25 hp Robin engine under the hood making it a bit of a "sleeper" lol. At least it doesn't run out of power pulling that box like my Onan powered tractors often do. Thanks for checking it out B-Rad!

👍🇺🇸 Nice job! On your box blade a hydraulic cylinder for the top link makes all the difference in using and controlling the box blade. Spreading gravel is also easier and you can control the thickness of the gravel as you spread it by tipping the box blade back and forth. Same with the rippers, the depth & angle can be controlled by tipping the box blade using the hydraulic top link!

I like the way you work. Also like your pull type blade as I get what your saying about the box blade. I have as well and was always searching for something better. I made my own levelling blade as well. You can check it out on wood you mize it face book page and go back a few post. I like your circle gig there as well and now I’m tossed as to make one like yours or keep what I have. The advantage of mine is I can lift it up completely and back up to things. I do many circles as well but then I get pushed up rows on the outside of my blade if you know what I mean. It all straightens out when like you I do my final finish though. I have 3’ runners on it which also acts like a grader and fills the right spots and pulls off the high spots. Any way nice work. I like guys that don’t think “it’s good enough”.Cheers!
