They ask about gender for several reasons. I happen to be intersex. I appear male and live as such but my body does has sexual development that doesn’t fit that of a typical male. In other words my male parts did not develop fully during my early stage gestation. I’m male enough to be called male and that is all anyone needs to know. I even married and with difficulty we managed to have children. There are other reasons why the medical community asks this question but that is because of people who are transgender. I really do not feel they need to ask such questions either ask you should take people as they present themselves. Remember gender is not as clear as you would think. As an example a women with the intersex sexual development called AIS androgen insensitively syndrome appears 100% female but in reality has male DNA. In very very rare cases they have been known to give birth to children. But as far as I’m concerned someone taking a blood donation does not need to know that. I’ve reached the age in life where I don’t try to hide the fact that I’m intersex not that anyone would care. It is just that so many people are preaching that there are only males and female. That is clearly not the case. Of the 26 surgeries I’ve had in my life 7-8 have been for my intersex condition. In addition I’ve had stage three testicular/ ovarian cancer that took seven months of chemotherapy to bring under control. The ovarian cancer I had is very fatal in women but for some reason people with male DNA, like me, can survive. My survival wasn’t pretty but I did survive. Guess what I’m trying to say is to not take these medical questions as being an insult directed at you personally. Try to think of life as being far more complex than you would ever believe.

We try to understand life from our preconceptions, but it refuses to conform to them. Not even in the case of "hard" biological categories like sexes is there a clear dividing line, much less in psycho-social constructs like genders and gender roles. It's nice you brought up your personal story, it's the kind of cognitive dissonance that can help some people understand better.
@davidmicheletti6292
@davidmicheletti6292 6 жыл бұрын
fede I have not heard the expression cognitive dissonance for a very long time. Sort of refreshing to hear people use advanced terminology. I’ve often told people I fit into the intersex community on some level but not exactly sure where. Lol you could even call me transgender I guess if one were to reach far enough into terminology and it would be fully acceptable. We are who we are and that is good enough. The truth is the medical community doesn’t know how to deal with we Intersex very well either. In fact at age ten after my first round of surgeries I was almost given gender conformation surgery, a sex change. But it was decided to leave my alone and let me follow the path to become a male. To be honest they believed I wouldn’t make much of a male. Lol oh well. But in time I did go threw a bit of male sexual development and even married and have remained so for over fourth years. One doctor told me I’m far too pretty to be a male. This was the state of mind of so many people in those days and even today. But to be honest I’ve never felt very male and really have never wished to be, even from a very young age. Ironically the only person I’ve been in love with is my spouse and we are still are madly in love. She loves me for who I am and what more can a person ask for. Be well

I was right that was one of your best restores, Mr. Pete! Personally I would spent the additional 2 hours work and changed the $10 worth of bearings. Baldors are Excellent motors and worth keeping! Looking forward to seeing it's use and sharpening process. Love that color too. The thing about that brand Hammer-tone I've found is you have to shake the stuffing out of it before spraying and have put them under the heat lamp a few times for 15 minutes...then it works fine. Who knows how long those cans sit on the shelf...not everyone likes Hammer-tone paint. At our age we see so many _Insidious_ things creeping up on us because of our longevity and being brought up and trained ourselves with some basic common sense as a foundation, *_Discernment is not an option it's an imperative_*, IMHO. It feels like an obligation to voice some reason to those younger that get swept away with polarization. Blood doesn't have Gender...the more pertinent questions for blood donation to me are; Have you had Hep C or Aids or Liver/Kidney failure... This whole Big Data/AI/facial recognition thing is my biggest Insidious Peeve and they have kids writing the code for it. How is that DP speed reducer coming? Thanks Much for what you bring Mr. Pete...like I said you are a Real Treasure!

Looks AWESOME! You did a really good job restoring it. There is one problem though, now you have me wanting to get a Lisle grinder to restore. I just finished restoring a South Bend Heavy 10 lathe, and am on to the next restore job already. What is a real shame though, is that there will be no point in even attempting to restore anything made these days, about everything manufactured today is throw away. Heck, most things these days you can't even get apart without breaking them. If you want a machine of any quality and rigidity, you restore a machine that was built back when pride was taken in the products that were made. They simply don't make things like they use to! Again, AWESOME job! I hope you enjoy your newly restored grinder, nothing like the feeling of bringing an old machine back to life.

dont sweat the small stuff mr Pete. the internet has brought us a little closer to the rest of the world, but to be honest, and i think in your heart you will agree, there more good changes in the world today than bad. all you will manage to do is give yourself blood pressure problems, and very unlikely to change anything that concerns you. you do a very valuable work here, and worrying about how "the other half lives" will do you no more good in 2018 than it did at any time in the past.we need to get on with our lives and community , and loose no sleep about things we cant change. I am very proud of you for giving blood thats a wonderful thing you do, and if it means stepping out of your comfort zone then you may well become a better person for it!

As I understand that hammer finish, it's silicone in paint (like silicone lube). Has to go one thick to get the mottling. That IS a pretty shade of green. Having the adjustment knobs in stock is handy.... Almost like you have your own hardware store in the basement. Nope, it wouldn't bother me in the least. I'd tell him "Put down your best guess, but don't get it wrong!!"

stxrynn Yes, that’s correct in order to get the hammer tone to develop the wet coat has to be heavy enough and wet to form the hammer tone finish. Try a piece of scrap and you will see it.

For that hammertone paint, the trick is to apply a relatively heavy coat. It needs to be a thick enough layer for it to flow into the fisheye texture. Consequently, this often makes it difficult to avoid runs. I've found that the best approach is to apply two coats, since the effect tends to make thin spots. Unless they've changed something in the last couple years, that stuff does turn out like the cap (notice the cap is actually painted!). I've used a ton of it. EDIT: i guess you figured that out! As the grandson of a man who spent his life rebuilding motors, changing bearings is just another trivially mundane routine like changing socks. ... but it's your machine, so you're free to do whatever you want -- and I know you know that, because you did.
@yohlad263
@yohlad263 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct. A Hammer Tone paint is pretty much a simple fast dry metallic enamel with silicon added to it to create the fish eyes. If applied too thin/dry, the film does not have enough flow left for the silicon to disperse the pigments and fine metal flex. It is a tricky product to apply. A thin dry initial coat followed by a medium wet coat is the secret. Unfortunately, spraying out of an aerosol can, you have no control over the % of dilution. Buying it in a quart and thinning it yourself and using a small spray gun makes everything much easier.

Turned out nice! I do like your color choice, fits the machine. I have found with the hammered/textured/wrought paint you must shake the can constantly, like if your not spraying your shaking! It must be applied much heavier than you would with normal paint and I think your right it is just fish-eye. It is hard to get a consistent finish with. Years ago I worked in an auto body shop and the painter was nutso, rightfully so about not buffing or waxing while he was painting. We had a new guy in the shop that must not have been warned of this rule (he should have just known that) and guess what he did?!?! And guess who sanded that car back to primer for free?!?! At least he didn't have to pay for the materials. I don't think that I ever saw Jim that mad before or since!

If they self identify as a lamppost it won’t make a lick of difference to you in your life.

Out use of hammertone paint needs a thick enough coat for the waxes to cause the dimple effect. Thin coats are not wet enough to react accordingly. Thin coats are great for avoiding runs, but you almost need to lay on nearly a run for it to properly dimple up

Acrylic plastic (plexiglas, PMMA) shatters much too easily, and is a bugger to cut in thin pieces. Ask me how I know... It's also not a safe thing to use for eye protection. Polycarbonate plastic is what is used to make things like safety glasses and faceshields, and it does not shatter. Typically, the lenses of safety glasses are ~6mm or 1/4" thick. A faceshield such as is worn while grinding, intended to go over safety glasses is thinner - 3mm or 1/8" Oh, and polycarbonate (PC) is not ABS (acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene - an opaque resin). I watched a little further, and see that you switched over to using PC instead of PMMA...

Lyle, I don't know if any of the previous 391 comments have mentioned this, but when you said that you wouldn't apply the lubrication to the small moving part that you wanted to lubricate, I though that I'd recommend trying some of the lock graphite lubricant. I think that it would provide the lubrication that you want without attracting the grinding grit. And yes, I have only the slightest "difficulty" with "transgender" folks, simply because I haven't met any (that I know about). But I don't worry about that -- it's their lives, not mine. A very physically large male ex-Marine at work made the "sex change" and had a really tough time because the very few women in that part of the facility refused to share their heads with "her" -- it took a while to build "her" a transgender head (I work at a Navy facility, so I've learned to call restrooms "heads"). I personally haven't been asked what my sex is (yet), but being Type I diabetic and having used cow-based insulin for only one month in early 1983, they won't accept my blood because of the possibility of me having mad-cow disease. My Doctors have never asked what my sex is, but I think that if one does, I'll simply laugh at him/her. They haven't asked me if I am a mad-cow either! And thank you (in the last video?) for not using the sheet metal for the outer wheel guard cover. I didn't realize that you were pulling everyones' legs with that. I was about to comment that that wasn't a good idea because it obviously would not contain the fragments of an exploding wheel. No-one wants to be exposed to fragments of a fast moving/exploding wheel (I hope). Always use the wheel guards and stand to the side as you start the grinder up, in case the wheel explodes. We had a very small (maybe 2-inch OD) grinding wheel on a high-speed grinder at work with no guards -- the wheel exploded and hit the Machinist in the back of the head -- he never recovered from that injury and had to retire early because of the injury. He simply was unable to work after that injury, even though he tried.

Maybe, the thin plastic is Polystyrol. That tends to break, when you look at it. The Polycarbonate is almost bulletproof. I have never good luck with the spray cans in hammered. With a spray gun, it works fine, but is to much cleaning, so i use a brush for hammered look. That looks ok. BTW: i love the rants.

Holes in lexan/plexi are best made by melting them. The 'burr' (melted, squeezed-out material) can then be broken off or shaved down with a sharp knife. A soldering iron works in a pinch.

Polycarbonate is different than ABS. ABS is what they use for sewer pipe in the US. Acrylic can be known as Lexan, I believe. The question is for demographic data. Might also indicate what tests they run on the blood. As a resident of a more "free thinking" state, this question is more and more required in the dating scene to know what you're getting into.

I have a friend who restored the interior of his 41 Ford pickup with hammer tone with great results. I guess he had enough experience to perfect his technique. One question: why didn't you remove the pile of grit on the base casting, instead of just painting over it, or is that a statement?

If they ask me for my gender I'll tell them if they can't tell they have big problems, and leave. It's either that or whip it out and get arrested. Stinkin' PC idiots. Perfect plastic for the guard by the way. It will withstand impacts if the wheel explodes or chips and isn't likely to shatter becoming more projectiles. I think you installed the face guard in a different position from your original plan. Early in the video (about 10:25) when you were test assembling you had the guard under the steel strap. As you currently have it the washers should be on top of the plastic and there is probably no need for washers where the nuts connect to the strapping.

Great video Mr. Pete. A tip for you on the Hammered ... I have restored 2 lathes and used the same colour Blue. To get it hammered avoid the spray ...it lays it on too thin to get the hammered look. I use a 2" or 3" wide good quality brush and brush it on them dab it lightly all over with the end of the bristles. The paint lays down smooth and does not look brushed and it has a beautiful hammered look. Regards Sam

Mr. Pete, great project, and it sure looks good. There's a lot of science that goes into medicine these days. Some of that science involves keeping statistics on who gives blood. It's not right to track things based on their specific identity, so anonymous statistics are kept. Sometimes, rather than assuming your gender, it's useful to ask the patient or donor their gender, to see how they respond. It's not that the person asking the question can't tell you're male, they're asking the question to see what your answer is. All of this seemingly meaningless data goes to improve everyone's health. We can't learn about how things work or what's going on with us, without collecting information about what people are doing, how they answer questions, or don't answer questions.

(As for your rant on the changing attitudes, were ready for passing through it it’s their world now even if we don’t agree with it, it’s like us looking back at a bygone age that we didn’t agree with) all the best don’t let the buggers wear you down.

It looks good.. I just got ours at work to the point where we can use it. I had to make the dresser , support and stop. If they can’t tell my sex by looking at me. They’re the ones with a problem.

For a hammered look, don't follow the directions. The last coat needs to be a heavy coat of paint. I think that is why they now offer the forged hammer paint. You might want to use Hammerite paint.

I sometimes don't get the hammer tone finish from the same can that I previously got the advertised effect. If I remember correctly a little overspraying stimulated the tone. Like you my birth certificate defines my gender but they are trying screw that up now.

Very enjoyable series as it fits into most guys shops that must have the same need but don't do the restore. It would to have been great if you could have done the bearings. The rant was great as this is all part of the plan of the Masons. Looking forward to more, Lee

One thing i can say is I'd prefer to not see the finished product in the video thumbnail for me the reveal at the end is the best part but that's really my only mild negative. I agree whole heartedly with you that is a stupid question. You are born either XX OR XY it's that simple

Have not tried the green, but I use quite a bit of the silver hammertone paint, the trick to getting the hammered look is to apply it much heavier than you would with regular paint. It is a fine line between heavy enough, and too many runs.

I've found with that hammer paint will work but you have to lay it on thick and lay the next layer on top while the bottom layer is still wet but barely tacky. If you lay it on in multiple thin coats like normal paint it just lays on and smooths out.

In the blood business the questions must be asked to determine if the Donor blood is a risk. Life sexual choices have health risks, but in our communistic system face it, this country is far from free, political correctness ‘Dictates’ that no one can be offended, and in this instance that their blood would not be openly rejected is the objective of how & why you were asked the gender question. If you had answered that you believe yourself a woman then after you donated your blood it would secretly go into the trash. The illusion of that what ever life sexual choices is some how all ok, the lie that the blood is safe is preserved. The sexual deviation can walk out feeling good about themselves as they walk down the street. It really is over the top, but face it, this country is very sick, political correctness would punish me for saying so. Please don’t stop donating blood, donors with clean blood are becoming more rare, I myself bite my lip because some one out there needs my healthy blood and it may save their life. Until this foolishness can be put aside keep on keeping on.

Excellent project, and a truely useful tool to have in the workshop. I agree with you about the blood bank thing, the world has gone absolutely mad. But if disagree with any of this nonsense, you stand the chance of being called a facist or a racist or some such by youngsters who fall for all this stuff. Do you have a surface grinder in your shop ? I don't recall seeing you use one.
