Does the concentration of vinegar matter? What was the concentration for the solution you used?

Watched a lot of vids, yours was easy to follow..great idea with the wood blocks. Going to start this process tonight for few bars, and plates and even dumbbells. Going to paint the DB’s with a truck bed spray I found at menards, hope it works. I did see that one guy applied “super gun blue” to the bar after the washing And /baking soda the bar. I think he did all the scraping down like you did and wiped it clean..then applied the gun blue and then oiled it. The bar looked pretty sick afterwards. Thinking of trying it.

Glad you liked it and found it helpful! Good luck on your process as well. With regard to the super gun blue application, you might be referring to Matthew Moore. You can find him on Instagram @moorefoodnow. He does great DIY gym stuff, and I know he's used the gun blue on a bar restoration process before. It looked great.

About to try this myself. How did it go for you?

A C I didn’t end up using the super blue.:.well I tried on one bar and it did nothing. Wire brush and vinegar works well, but I also found greased lighting worked great on the plates I cleaned and painted.

Tenho uma barra olímpica sem essa ponta giratória e na ponta da barra tem parafuso onde adquirir essa ponta.

Hi, as soon as I dry off the cleaned bar it starts to show rust forming. is there a way that this won't happen? I want to put a clear coat of Rust-oleum on it.If I put oil on it, it won't stick. thx for the video.

Why the 3-in-1 oil on the shaft of the bar? I thought the oil only served the purpose of making the bushings/bearings rotate faster if they got sort of stuck due to "old age".

It is indeed useful for the rotation of the bar, but it also helps remove rust and applies a protective coating as well (helping prevent future rust). On a bare steel bar, this is very useful.

I did this with a charcoal barbell and paint completely came off 😅

That doesn’t sound good :-) Out of curiosity, why was there paint on the bar? Perhaps it was a black zinc coating or a cerakote?
