It is awesome how old Tonka trucks can be restored. I did Not always know how they could be disassembled to be restored
@morebetterrestorations79874 жыл бұрын
Their tab and rivet design makes them easy to disassemble and restore. Except when you break a tab, or ones missing, or you can't get to that rivet to drill it out lol.

Thanks, I like it too! I started to go with another color but the Mirror Red from Eastwood seemed like the right choice.

She was a rusty mess wasn’t she? Marvellous what a sandblasting cabinet and powder coating will do. Really enjoyed this one. Love your paint booth with extractor fan. Might have to sacrifice one of my machines to fit one of those in my shed. The older I get, the worse the paint fumes seem to be. 👍🇦🇺

She was very rusty and didn't want to be taken apart. I love sandblasting it all away though! Thanks for the compliments, I love my paint booth. It's amazing how much powder will travel if you don't have a filter and fan to catch it!
@stijnVDA19943 жыл бұрын
this is a good try but i see a few problems, 1. the powdercoat has nothing to real stick on the metal thus creating the risk of it cracking and flaking off. 2. the seating needed more saloncare, and the stuff does not really need bright lights rather uv rays from like a small uv lamp. 3. it had a big yellow decal on the side that said tonka. i recomend looking at like chipchannel since he uses also saloncare against yellowing of the plastic..
@morebetterrestorations79873 жыл бұрын
From what I've researched it is best to apply powder coating to rough sandblasted metal as it has a good "tooth" to adhere too. Primer can help if the part is to see a hard life but as a display toy it wouldn't be necessary. I should have used some filler as the powder levels, but doesn't fill as well as I had hoped for. There's several rough spots I'm not happy with but live and learn. I actually treated the seats twice with saloncare in the sun but only showed once in the video. The wheels whitened up for me. I really wanna try the hydrogen proxide and UV lamp method. I think I made an error in assuming the seats should have been white. This is a later toy than I thought and I found out the original color may have been tan after all. Apparently it may have been sold with a tan plastic top and a toy boat and trailer. You are correct in it missing a decal. At the time of this video I did not have the means to create them, that has since changed. Thanks for watching! (Also I enjoy Chip Channel & his sheep too =) ).

Nice job. For the yellowed plastic I've seen someone use hydrogen peroxide and a uv light. Also for those bleaching agents I think you have to give them a couple days. I'm not positive but could be something to check out on your next project
@morebetterrestorations79874 жыл бұрын
I want to try the hydrogen peroxide and UV trick. I think you're right about the bleaching agents taking a couple of days. I wonder too if maybe the interior was supposed to be a real light tan? The earlier Jeepsters look white to me but many of the later models I think may have been tan from the factory. I wasn't around to see them new!

hello! First, excellent work, my parents gave me a jeepster when I was 8 years old and it is true, the color of the interior was tan, it came with a trailer and a boat, it did not have a camper shell; That was when I lived in Colombia, now I live in the United States and I was very lucky to find a match in a swapmeet once, how much would a restoration like that cost if you did?
@morebetterrestorations79873 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m glad you like it. I’ve seen many more of these since I did this restoration. I’m glad you can confirm the tan interior and boats. I didn’t realize it when I bought it that it came within a boat and trailer. I don’t do restorations for payment as I just do these in my free time for fun. If I had more free time I would. I would guess to have someone do it would be $200-$300 in supplies and labor.
@davidparker22594 жыл бұрын
Nice job. Did that have a top when new? And maybe a boat?

curios why you never used reproduction stickers to give it the finished original look and are the jeepster stamping deep enough to colour the same as the wheels? - other than that nice work
@morebetterrestorations79873 жыл бұрын
At the time of the restorations I didn’t have the means to print the stickers as I can now. As far as the stamping not being raised it was due to the powered coating. It was my first powder coat and I had read that paint will not stick to the slick powdered coat surface. I think though with a little sanding to give it a tooth it will stick. The powder coating is tough but honestly painting to me is easier. Thanks for watching.

No primer ? No sanding smooth!
@morebetterrestorations79874 жыл бұрын
No primer just the single coat of Mirror Red. I did find a product to use as filler that will withstand the temperatures needed to cure the powder, its called Lab Metal Hi temperature. I used it on two projects thus far. I will also try JB weld soon as it will withstand the temperature but is much cheaper $$$...Thanks for watching!

What should I do if the plastic pieces are cracked and missing sections?
@morebetterrestorations7987 Жыл бұрын
Plastics present a challenge. If they are in a terrible state you may try sourcing a replacement on sites like eBay. Some choose to repair the pieces just enough so that they can vacuum form a new piece over the old one. another option is to repair the piece with plastic or fiberglass, sand it then paint it.
@sunfishensunfishen2271 Жыл бұрын
My plastic insert is missing its dash section, where the steering wheel mounts and the plastic that did remain was all pitted and chalky. I’ve found a replacement on eBay with rust stains. Any treatment recommendations?
@morebetterrestorations7987 Жыл бұрын
@@sunfishensunfishen2271 To remove the rust I would try product known as salon 40. It’s a cream used to bleach hair. It’s basically hydrogen peroxide in a cream form. I would take the plastic and apply the cream to it and then wrap it in a clear plastic saran wrap. It’s best to use a UV light, but most people don’t have that so you can place it out in the sun instead. It may take several attempts to make a difference. Be careful with the product and follow the warning labels.

@normanphilo29154 жыл бұрын
Need to work on body work more. Can still see all the pitting from the rust. PLus, would be nice to see more of the work you put into it. That's what I like about the restorations.
@morebetterrestorations79874 жыл бұрын
I agree, first time powder coating I mistakenly thought the powder would "smooth out" as it cured. I purchased and used Lab Metal as a filler in an upcoming video but I don't like it. It does what it says but you cant wipe it down with any solvents prior to coating or it will soften up again. I will try JB weld in future products as a filler. I want to try some longer videos as well, I was worried some would get bored and leave. Thanks for watching!!!
