It finally happened... after four years of work I finished the granary restoration. What was a centuries-old, ruined stone building, with a collapsed roof, dirt floor, no windows or doors and crumbling stone walls, is now a fully-functioning workshop. Thank you to everyone who helped along the way!

Incredible work. You are one of the few on here that do this at your own pace & I love that. Many rush in & start planting in the first year before they know the land, climate, geology etc. I love that you took 4 years to do this at minimal cost with volunteers & recycle as much as possible. Doing the barn first was also a brilliant idea. A practice run so your cottage will be incredible. If it takes you another 4 years or longer to do the cottage then so be it. Bravo.

If that step slopes upwards as they go out you might want to consider cutting a slot in it just in front of the door for drainage.

It's always surprising, not only how long these jobs take, but also the material costs. You done a nice job of it. A good workshop is essential - especially when you get round to renovating the cottage. Best wishes :)

The video I have been waiting for!!! First love the red. Second is a word of caution, the slide locks do work great, but in my case to well. I got locked in my goat barn, the wind slammed the door and the law of whats in motion remains in motion kicked in the lock slid shut and I was stuck in there for 2 hours, thankfully my husband was home and it wasn't freezing cold, and I could get my little dogs barking inside to wake my husband. What was 2 hours could have been upwards of 2 days. I have gate latches which now have caribbeaners on them to prevent that.

Perhaps during some seasons of the year, you could even move a sleeping bag or mattress into the building as a temporary shelter. That building would definitely withstand the fiercest winter storm.

It's probably a good thing that you didn't know at the outset that it would take four years to restore the granary, as that might have been discouraging. My college voice teacher told me that she didn't usually level with her students that "it takes 10 years to build a voice" because most would not have stuck with it. You've done a beautiful job, and the world thanks you -- at least the world of people who cherish and want to preserve tradition.

Mossy Bottom - one of the main reasons, believe it or not, why I moved to Ireland. I hope I will get the chance to visit one day! Currently living in beautiful Killarney with plenty to explore whilst working to become free of my student debt but who knows where I will end up having inspirations like that. It's just nice to follow up ideas like that budding and blooming. Many blessings for the whole household!:) Nelly.

Very rewarding day's with the skills learnt and the people you meet, of course plenty of brews to keep you going. Knowing that you have contributed to a piece of history to something that will be around for many years.

It's great to do these things when one is younger. I'm in my fifties now and it's harder to do a lot, and if I could go back in time, I'd do things better so they don't require so much maintenance. Example: I'm rebuilding a fence that I could've built out of cedar, but I used regular lumber and painted it. Cedar and stain would've lasted so much longer.

old clothes won't insulate anything if you soak them properly in the concrete - it's the air trapped between fibers that makes wowen clothes insulating. If you left them full of air for insulation you'd be jeopardising the integrity of the floor - so no insulation with clothes in the concrete. x)

What a difference, Daniel. I’m so glad you now have a workshop! Yay! Talk about putting blood, sweat, & tears into a project. Of course, you’re no stranger to that. I remember that time you were sick from drinking unfiltered water from your stream, if memory serves. Could you have or did you get sick from shoveling up the animal especially rat droppings kicking up in the dust. I was surprised to see you weren’t safely masked up for a project like that. At any rate, the former granary now looks stunning. I remember how it looked in the early days. Bravo!! 👏🏼 🌀✌🏼
