I always like restoration videos. taking something old and giving it new life, it is awesome! by the way, a quick tip, if I may: I would have used a corded drill for sanding, and not a cordless one. the reasons are, that 1) the corded drill has more torque and there for does the job faster and easier, and 2) the continues strain is not healthy for the battery operated tool, as it was designed for "short bursts" of screwing some screws. the trade-off is a less comfortable tool to work with. thanks for the vid!

That is a good hand axe. Great find. It did not even need any major repair. I think that is a carpenters axe. It is designed for shaping wood rather then cutting down trees, so I am surprised it works rather decent for that task.

This is a carpenters axe. It's used make planks and furniture. It is supposed to be very sharp (like you did), but instead of chopping with it you should cut it with a choppy motion. Splitting logs with this axe works well but that's not its intended use. Try making some furniture or something with it! Nice video!

@kleinjahr
@kleinjahr 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. It is an older style European axe. What you're thinking of is a broad axe, with a single edge bevel. Which is used for making planking and flattening the surfaces of logs. Another feature of a broad axe is the handle which is canted, so you don't bark your knuckles.
@MrChubbyHubby.
@MrChubbyHubby. 6 жыл бұрын
No actually Sylphynford Tachibana is correct here, that is in fact a hewing hatchet, you are the one thinking about a broad axe, and that did have a single bevel.

just soak any piece of rusty metal in white vinegar (the cheap stuff) for a day or two depending how bad the rusty is and then if there is still some surface rust sand it off and coat the nestle in some kind of anti rust like coconut oil

Great vids I got to this one because I also like bringing old tools to life. I like the pitting in antique axes, I don't know that I would call this restored in that it removed quite a lot, it lost some of that antique character, looking more modern. For one of the others, try sitting in vinegar for some time (depends how rusty) then steel wool that rust off and leaves a gentle scratch free surface, highlights of steel will appear and the pitted areas will look "patina" as a darker grey. Beware though you need to wash the head in water (maybe a little something like baking soda to stop acid reaction of vinegar) caution as you clean it off it can flash rust. but a little more steel wool can clean that up. I also wonder about wiping in rubbing alcohol at the end to help dry immediately and stop that possibility. I would grind down the face though, slowly and making sure it kept cool. then I coat in paste wax.

right now i'm in middle or restoring a old pexto stake plate and anvil set. On tools like those I will have to use aggressive abrasives and polisher to bring the tops to a mirror shine, but on the under side, non-working ends and base plate I will clean up enough for the metal to look preserved but not to take the tiny dings out. While making everything very functional.

just a helpful tips idk if u have looked into it but there a rust neutralizer called evapo rust, take a rusty piece of metal in it idk how well it works on pitting but on surface rust like that ax Chuck it in the basket that's comes in the bucket leave it in the evapo rust over nite and ur piece will be rust free with no grinding just buff sharpen and done
