Welcome to the ultimate video guide to restoring a vintage motorcycle - with the classic 1961 Royal Enfield Bullet 350.
In this series I focus on the iconic English made 1961 Royal Enfield Redditch made 350 Bullet.
This video is about restoring a very old and worn out AMAL Monobloc 375 series carburettor on a 1961 Royal Enfield Bullet 350.
Covering:
- Stripping and assessing the AMAL 375 monobloc
- Cleaning the AMAL 375 monobloc
- Repairing the sticky throttle on a AMAL 375 monobloc
- Repairing a leaking fuel chamber cover on a AMAL 375 monobloc
- Assembling the AMAL 375 monobloc
- Modifying the AMAL 375 monobloc for Ethanol use.
- Fitting the AMAL 375 monobloc to the motorcycle
- Testing the AMAL 375 monobloc
This video does not include the tuning part. There will be a further video which covers the whole aspect of tuning the carburettor in relation to the timing. These two really need to be discussed at the same time.
Every week a new video will be uploaded covering a specific topic of restoring this classic 1961 Royal Enfield Bullet 350, so PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL AND HIT THE NOTIFICATION 'BELL' ICON, TO BE NOTIFIED WHEN A NEW VIDEO IS PUBLISHED.
I look forward to helping as many enthusiasts as I can.
Some History of the Bullet:
Discovered in a barn rusting away, this Royal Enfield Bullet was rescued just in time. Through sheer frustration at so many 'over-my-head' explanations on how it should be done, I decided to produce a complete technical guide to all the processes required to restore a complete Royal Enfield.
90% of all the parts were painstakingly repaired, from the Smiths clock, the tank, bakelite switches, respraying and upholstery. I also cover the 6 volt challenges and the good and bad of LED lights on a vintage motorcycle.
Yes if you are thinking about restoring an English / British made vintage motorbike then you just lucked out! It doesn’t really matter what model or brand you choose, you will learn each step on how to organise your workshop, assemble the parts and most importantly….....how to setup and tune the engine and the Amal carburettor.

Good video. I have a 376 - 25 on a Bultaco. Cleaned and all new jets and cable but slow to return to idle after revving. The float, slide and choke are original. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi. It’s a simple carb so not much else to look at as you describe it then the last part of the cable return. One of the errors I see is not having enough slack on the throttle before you engage revs. The tendency is to set the tension of the cable so that there is no play. It’s a natural tendency because we like a tidy bike! There must be as much as a quarter turn of nothing before the cable engages. Why? Because when you rev up and drop off the cable must be absolutely free at that last bit of the drop because the spring is so slack any tension will cause this slow drop in revs. If it’s not that then you could have a sticking point to find. Basically the needle is not closing off to stop flow back to the idle jet. There isn’t much else to look for I can’t think. Good luck 🤞

So that bike doesn't have a heat insulator block between the carb and the manifold?

the monobloc is a lovely looking carb but it seems like a flawed design with the opening of the bowl on the side. When I bought my 1964 Triumph TR6 the monobloc had been replaced with an Amal Concentric carb, which works great. I still have the original monobloc, but it's sitting on a shelf as a display piece for now. I wouldn't mind putting it on the bike at some point to see if she runs any different with the original carb.

I found a lot of negative stuff written about these carbs. If you set them up right they are solid and dependable. Very little to go wrong. If seated correctly with a new gasket, as I show in the video, then no problems. On occasion the pilot jet might cause the engine to die after a rev up. Not sure you can fix that other than raise the idle a bit. Someone will surely comment. 🙏
