I learn something every time I watch you work , I am 68 and have been building , creating and fixing stuff since I was very young , I still have the tool kit myFather gave me for my fifth birthday, real tools just small in size including a Used Bedrock #2 he found. This craft has captivated me as an engineer, I have worked on 5 continents, lived on three of them but still recognize I have a lot to learn! Thanks to you for your educational videos !

I have watched this twice already! This man's vision of how a job like this should be done is top-notch! Thank you again, Tom, you make me smile. I wish I could still do this work, I would beg you to help me with a statue of driftwood that has never been leveled. I am ashamed to say that it has sat on a doily which was folded over so it wouldn't fall forward. I recently saw the carving and realized I had a great piece of Pipestone with a lip on it. Now the beautiful carving of a woman with her hair bundled in ringlets and curls, her sapphire stone on the Mindseye (some call it the third eye), sits looking up instead of at the floor. I love wood. I have bought seeds for the Bristle Cone Pine, the longest growing tree in the world, so I could have one planted on my ashes. Trees and I have been friends for a long time, I was obviously a tree-hugging hippy in my day. Funny isn't it? Like the Cobblers children running barefoot, my collection of wooden carvings got put to the back burner when I was doing restorations. Now I can't say honestly that I have even dusted them in the last few months. Ah, the twilight years....LOL. Pft, I wish I hadn't sold my tools. who in their right mind sells that stuff just because you can't use it anymore? LOL...jk.

What I so appreciate about your work is that it reminds me of growing up in Germany and always being told by my grandfather 'do quality work or don't do it at all' Your attention to detail is absolutely fascinating and I appreciate watching you. My house burned down last year and soon I will have a new one built. I will fill it with solid wooden furniture buying 2nd hand and refinish them if needed. Watching you I learn so much about doing it. My late husband worked at one time in a refinishing shop called the Strip Joint (I had some fun with that) and I picked up a few things here and there. However watching you is a whole different thing. They weren't that particular about doing things and I pick up so much more from you. Thanks for putting out those videos. I love them

Now I understand why restoration differs from repair. That was most interesting. You have to really understand how furniture was put together back in the day in order to be able to take it apart without further damage. In the beginning I could figure out how or why they had put 3 dowels at different angle into the desk to support the legs. Thank you so much for sharing this very intensive restoration. This form of furniture (small desk on legs) is often called a 'Lady's desk'... independent of its age and the age and gender of the owner.
@johnsonrestoration3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to think about - so the gender connotation relates to the piece itself rather than the intended owner?
@dlevi673 жыл бұрын
@@johnsonrestoration Well... I think generally small, dainty and highly decorated pieces were seen as pieces suitable for a Lady's apartments rather than a Gentleman's rooms - and they may have been originally commissioned/made/purchased _for_ a Lady, but the name was (is) independent of the actual owner's gender then, never mind where the piece eventually ended 100+ years later. See for example art/collection/search/390607 on the Metropolitan Museum website (sorry, if I post a link the whole answer gets deleted by KZbin!)
