I cannot express strongly enough how cathartically relaxing your videos are! Since retiring from 4+ decades in both Navy and federal wildlife law enforcement careers, between backpacking and fly fishing, i’ve Taken to woodworking with hand tools and restoring “barn, flea market, curb and antique store” finds. Your willingness to share your talent has helped me immensely. As a retired USFWS Officer ( I patrolled southern Maine Federal lands and coastline during my final years), I sincerely appreciate your obvious love of animals and wildlife! As an aside? I have an Australian Shepherd....she’s a “wild child”.....keeps me running.....but even she seems to calm down and rest easy while I watch your videos. Thank you for the education......AND the peace that your videos temporarily bring to my post-retirement and often crazy household!

Fantastic job on the veneer I picked up a lot of tricks from you as to how to handle loose and missing veneer on antique furniture. I am a new subscriber and look forward to learning more from you in videos to come. You saved a lovely piece of furniture that was rotting away bravo. I hate the new crap furniture they sell nowadays it is not worth half of their asking price. It falls apart and there is no way to fix any of it. Every item in my home I have gotten from antique stores yard sales and some even off the street people where tossing out for collection by trash pick up. I will take an old beat up real wood item over the pressboard and MDF sawdust and glue board new furniture with glued on faux wood finish crap every time.

It looks freaking Amazing!!! That's the same thing that I'm currently trying to restore. except mine had 75 Coats of paint plus I'm sure some lacquer stains enough stuff to completely conceal the fact that there was locking hardware Tom the top of The drawers. I am missing veneer And have already removed all the loose stuff which was only in areas where there was already the near missing. Now I'm having a hard time figuring out where to get my patch pieces. It's tiger oak white oak I believe. Which was a huge shock that somebody would cover up that with doo doo Brown paint. Well that was yet another fabulous job that has reaffirmed im in WAY over my head! Lol i agreed to do a restoration for a gentalman on a very similar piece. I found it odd as it was in that mission style but instead of the curved arms on top it had more of a pillar shaped post, a beveled edge mirror along with some ornate wood carvings along the top and over laid on the sides. It also has bear claw feet. Once i got thr 750,000 layers of paint and god knows what else but it was enough to conceal the locking mechanisms. Its a server as both top drawers had felt. Issue is that once i finally found wood i said an ugly word because at first i thought it was tiger wood. Then i heard about "oak cut on the half grain"? Ultimately it's got all these lighter colored striped that don't run with the grain on the whole thing! I will as well have to rebuild the bottom drawer, reaffix the top drawer fronts thst are curved but aside from the real wood laminate damage on the top the 2 cabinet doors have more missing than present!!. It belonged to his mother who has passed and i want to do a good job and do hsve a knack for restoration... however this is making me wish i didnt live in Texas and could just bring it to you! At least id know justice was done to this piece of history. However i don't.. so i guess my question is where can i find replacement laminate. It need to match or will be obvious. That is once i determine for sure what kind of wood im dealing with. Thanks, Stay home mom of teenagers who already know everything and don't need me, so mom took up a hobby. ;) Ps when he askex me he said it was a dresser! Imagine my shock to come home to that beast!!

Another fascinating vid. How do you decide when to reuse and when to replace the veneer? For spot finishing like that I use aerosols from Mohawk Finishing www.mohawk-finishing.com/products/wood-touch-up-repair/aerosols/ultra-classic-toner/, the clear lacquers, and the toners which are essential for matching. There's lots of methods that people describe. What's always works best for me is padding with denatured alcohol. Depending on how bad it is, if it's not that bad, I've taken them out with 0000 steel wool with a liberal amount of lemon oil polish as a lubricant. Either way it takes a lot of patience. Good luck!

You do really excellent work Sir, Which is why I subscribe to you. You mentioned that the bottom draw had the bottom portion replaced, if that is correct what sort of or type of lumber of plywood did you use? I just acquired an old oak dresser and two of the bottoms of the drawers are missing. I intend to keep it for myself once it’s repaired so what do you recommend for quality material.
@johnsonrestoration6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! When I have to replace a drawer bottom, I usually use 1/4" plywood. If it was a period piece, 18th century, I might use solid wood. Definitely use the plywood, oak furniture typically had plywood

TSP is not a surfactant. It’s a strong base (pH 12) and a chelate. It had been widely used as a water softener in laundry detergents but its use was discontinued in the 70’s due to eutrophication. You can easily confirm that it’s not a surfactant by shaking a solution with some oil, or coat a glass surface with wax and observe that water will bead after cleaning with it. Using it with bleach is fine to remove stains and mildew, but you should also clean the surface with a mild detergent to remove waxes, fats or oils, or clean the surface with a suitable hydrocarbon solvent.

Wow! I really should have paid attention in chemistry class! I will take this to heart and see if I can get my terms and procedures worked out. I need to look up "surfactant"

Hello, that was a stunning restauration! I´m from Germany, here the most restorers use "boneglue" oder gelatin, to glue the loose veneer. But in your video i can only see white glue. As a professional restorer why don´t you use the classical method, or is this not common in the US. I´m confused. Keep on your work, best wishes.

Hi Hans, thanks for watching. I most often use hide glue on period antiques. Sometimes if I'm adding new wood I use yellow glue

You do beautiful work! If I may, a little more talking and explanation while you're working would be very helpful. For example, the liquid you used on the veneer? How you decided how much to take out on the repair areas and what you did to "oil" the piece? Nice rooster, though!! lol Take good care and thanks for sharing!

Thank you! I will try to do more explanation. I started off trying to make the videos as short as possible and with as little talking as possible, we made one video with no talking! But due to popular demand we're going long. But I don't want anyone to get bored! That's my fear

LOL, I totally understand! However, you do such nice work, it's worth watching! And, not to be too forward, but from the little bit of voice we did hear, it comes across pleasant and easy to listen to. So, no fears :0)

Would you be interested in just the mirror on one of these buffets. I only have the top mirror? Thanks

great job and this sort of furniture is really good quality compared to most of what's made now, it's a pity that it is so undervalued in todays market.
