Hey everyone! If you’re into restoration projects, check out my latest video where I take on the challenge of polishing plastic on an old multi-plug. It’s a bit of a tricky process, but definitely an interesting one! I’d highly recommend giving it a watch-I’d love to hear your thoughts on how it turned out! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXXJeqlsjb9phLM

You should conver this one to a bluetooth speaker. You can even sell it afterwards.

This may not have been damage from a soldering iron actually. This could have been damage from the cable that was originally on these speakers. Something about the rubber on the wires reacts (in warm environments) with the plastic (ABS) and it leaves a mark in the plastic. This happens a lot on vintage keyboards. The way they look close together and parallel to each other, it was either wrapped around the speaker, or it was a coiled cable.
@TS-cs2pe2 ай бұрын
ah, that makes more sense. as i can't think about what scenario would make that many but relatively consistent soldering marks
@theBabyDead2 ай бұрын
Yeah, my old vintage shit had markings like this everywhere, as well. I can assure you we didn't have a soldering iron.

Very informative, thanks a lot. I bought a Dreamcast controller with the same damage, it's good to know what caused this kind of damage.

It's the plasticizers in the vinyl cable jacket that do the damage.

To avoid the cables melting my retro gear; I just pack the cable in a circle (no need for zip-ties or anything), and put small nylon zip-lock bags over the cables of every device. You can find those pretty cheaply at ikea; but pretty much any nylon zip-lock bag will do... Afaik, nylon isn't susceptible to the stuff that's oozing out of soft plastics. Or at least, I haven't had any incidents since I started doing this 4 years ago.

This is not damage caused by soldering but by the speaker wire itself. When the wire is wrapped around the device in contact for a long period of time, it reacts and ends up melting. This only happens with some types of plastic.

It likely isn’t soldering damage, although that’s how it looks. I buy and sell vintage computer stuff and sometimes the cables can damage the plastic. Keyboards, mice, speakers, all of it. The pinned comment does mention this.

Great question! A few months ago, I never thought I’d spend this much time restoring something I might not even use. I started researching plastic repair while looking into fixing auction cars. To practice, I began restoring old plastic tech-and I got hooked immediately. Now it’s an obsession! If others find it interesting, that’s just a bonus. Thanks for watching the entire video.

Where is the second speaker with a built-in amplifier?
@seikojason2 ай бұрын
One yank on the cable and it damages the speaker. I'd have put a knot on the cable on the inside of the housing and used hot glue to seal up that hole.
@CosmeticRestorationChannel2 ай бұрын
Good suggestion, thanks.
@seikojason2 ай бұрын
@@CosmeticRestorationChannel you’re welcome. Also when screwing self tapping screws into plastic, turn the screw backwards into the existing thread and when the screw clicks in, screw it in. That way, you don’t cross thread the housing and prevent cracks from appearing.

You've replaced an acoustic fiber with a regular fiber. For a "speakers" like this it doesn't matter but someone may repeat this for an actual speakers. It's a mistake. You've spend more on materials for this projects than you actually spend for a speaker set of this era in a decent shape. You can mix a 1,2-dichloroethane with abs plastic of same color to create a paste and fill the gaps instead of eternal polishing. You've done a good job on the case. Too good for such kind of project tbh.
@CosmeticRestorationChannel2 ай бұрын
I will definitely do my research on 1,2-dichloroethene, I might use it for a future project.

Sanding seems a bit rough to me. Was using peroxide to remove the yellowing not an option?
@CosmeticRestorationChannel2 ай бұрын
I did use 12% hydrogen peroxide(the liquid form) to retrobrite. If there weren't any soldering damage, I would've only used peroxide. From my experience with retrobrite, it only bleaches the top layer of the plastic, so if you sand after a retrobrite session you will expose the yellow layer. So I always polish and sand before I retrobrite.

I would never use a dremel in a restoration of any of my retro computers/electronics. No control and way to invasive. Use scalpel, fine grit sandpaper and glassfiber pen. Start with the retrobright so you can see the damage. Also, i would never remove an original logo!
