Wonderful job restoring those H.K. Porter bolt cutters from the early 1900s. The small one is an #0 size, next size is #1 size and the big beast is #3 size. My dad worked at the plant these were made at. The plant was first located in Boston, then the called the same area Everett and finally Somerville 43 referring to their zip code of 02143. The tools had not changed much between 1900 and 1960s. They made them very good there. Particularly with my dad making the tools. I have 16 tools all made at that plant! I think of my dad every time I use these tools, which is every day!

The first pair I think you have the cutter heads on the opposite sides. If you go back and look at like 1 minute in the cutter blade on top or right has the wider shaft between the two bolts. You did an excellent job restoring those three H.K. Porter bolt cutters. My dad worked at the plant that they were made in. Depending on when they were made will determine whether they say Boston, Everett or Somerville 43 on the handles. Boston was on the handles during the early 1900s, then the location was called Everett in the 1950s, then Somerville 43 in the 1960s. The 43 number refers to the zip code of 02143 which was Assembly Square Somerville Mass. Location of the plant. The plant was closed down in 1988. I have 8 different cutters and I restored them using Red and Black engine elamel for accuracy of original color. They made tools to last there. Those colors seem appropriate because the company made train engines. Thanks again for restoring those cutters, it means alot to me. Every time I use my cutters I think of my dad.
@SalvageWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
That is awesome Stephen!! I love that!! I knew that about the locations because I thoroughly research each and every project!! I choose the colors mainly based on what I liked, but I wanted them to really look as amazing as the engineering that went into them! Even UNRESTORED they are beautiful tools built to last! I watch your videos for several reasons. My love of restoration of old rusty tools, you are the best, but also for your beautiful dogs! That little pup is precious! I know how hard it must be to let them go once they are old enough. Our shop dog was a petite Dobie female. She mated (unplanned of course) with a neighbor's Great Dane. Those were the most gorgeous pups. I wanted to keep all 6 but we had no trouble finding good homes for them.

One thing to consider is that when something has been sandblasted it will have little tiny pyramids standing up through the paint, it is important to knock them down with wire wheel or sandpaper before painting. The tip of them will become an entry point for rust to begin.
@InstrucTube5 жыл бұрын
If they had that many knicks and whatnot in the blade my guess would be that the heat treat originally wasn't all that good... might think of doing a proper heat treat if you have the equipment. As for that puppy? He's the cutest little helper you could ask for, so I have no problem with him following you around all the time. :P
@Dimythios5 жыл бұрын
Proper heat treat would have helped. now he's got gouges in his blades
@SalvageWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
I disagree! Most times nicks and dings happen to bolt cutters by using them on things that are larger than they are rated to cut, not because of improper heat treat, plus t good ones are designed to be sharpened because they can be adjusted.

I don't understand this black springy thing between two bolts. Consistently used on all the cutters. .... why? Anyone?
@SalvageWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Don't quote me, but I believe it's purpose is to keep them from staying open all the way, because it "should" spring them closed a bit.... It's definitely not very effective on these old ones, but we'll give them a break due to their age!
@ZAPATTUBE5 жыл бұрын
That locks the bolts in place so that movement of the head does not spin them loose. Like the castle nuts.
@w.loczykij53545 жыл бұрын
ZAPATTUBE I understand your suggestion and it was my best guess as well. BUT.... To keep bolts locked just thick plate between them held by a screw would suffice. Whereas this one here is bent at right angle AND spring loaded at the front. And this throws me off the simply locking plate theory.
@greatitbroke5 жыл бұрын
@@w.loczykij5354 They are just to keep the bolts from backing out with the action of the bolt cutters. It would naturally make the screws back out. a locking washer or even a nylocks would not work. The bearings on a trailer have the same thing.

Thank you! When I restore hand tools or smaller tools, I do enjoy doing families of them! If your bolt cutters have the adjustments on the sides to bring the jaws closer together, you should be able to grind them straight! Also there is a very good video on sharpening them without taking them apart, just do a search for it!

Thank you Jeff, I appreciate that! I always look for original color schemes, and sometimes go that route, but many times these tools and machines weren't anything special when originally made, and many other times I can't find original colors.
