Great restoration of the Billnas! The Axes are extremely hard to find in the United States, eBay has them but at a price between 100 to 150 USD. Just a few Euro's I could only wish. thank you for the video!

its true that people just trow away old axes. i found six axes in the scrap metal cointainer. two billnäs axes one 14.2 and one 1134, one säter, one hultafors and two whitout any markings on them. it is just sad that people trow them away

Hei, I have a Billnäs 12.3 I would like to restore and wondered where I could get a new handle for it. I live in Finland and any advice would be appreciated as I'm new to this. Oh and I also enjoyed this video.
@caide5 жыл бұрын
Best choice is to get some birch wood and make it yourself. You can buy handles from Motonet, made by hickory and then there is also. Puuilo sells some and some other companies, but maybe best ones are from Ähtärin puusorvaamo.

Could you tell me little bit more about the design of the axehead?
@caide6 ай бұрын
I think the design is originally from Sweden and these are from the first factories we had in Nordics. Collateral axe can take more beating and in my opinion is much better than the new Swedish design you can find now for example in Gränfors bruk axes. They have a lot different axes for different purpose: woodworking, splitting, felling and so on... You can find Billnäs catalog from 1928 here and see the different models and other tools too: digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi/pienpainate/binding/338807?page=1

Is it necessary to use two wedges or is one enough?

Usually one is enough. If you do it right.

I just received my billnas a few days ago. Very happy. The handle on mine seems too long, it is 26 inches. I may switch it. I'm trying to find a leather mask/sheath, I saw one on eBay that is made for a fiskars axe, but I don't know if it will fit. I noticed your handle is shorter, would you suggest that I make a shorter one? My axe head is the same as yours.
@caide5 жыл бұрын
It depends what purpose you use your axe. Longer is better when chopping woods, I like short because it's going to be more multipurpose use. I think yours is going to be ok.

@@caide how could I find a leather axe mask for a billnas?

Jonathan Caissie You can't find any factory made, there is traditional way to make it from birch bark. I made mine from leather myself. It's not difficult, I'm going to make a video about that too.

@@caide I just ordered a billnas. I noticed that the handle has no wedge. If I can save the handle, I will put a wooden wedge in. In your opinion would it be wise to also put a small metal step wedge as well? Also what kind of oil do you use on your handles?

Ну честно говоря, насадка окова на топорище неочень. По мне лучше бы новое сделал, и подогнал бы точнее. Ну и забивать деревянные клинья неудобным стальным топором тоже весьма сомнительное занятие, что и показал отколовшийся кусок.

At 20.00 my eyes hurt because of your puukko skills... You need hundred of hours of practice. I did it when I was 9-14 years old and I still use puukko regularly at 45 years. Also think on which side you carve wood when fitting the handle, it looks like you are working on back side, but you should have worked (mainly) on belly side. Putting screws through the collar is more like a travesty. Axe head seems to be in wrong position as well, not to mention it is not correctly ground (shape of the blade, not sharpness). BTW axe sharpness is not that improtant as many fools think. Good try nevertheless
