I have the successor to this model as my daily driver - the M6700. It's currently rocking a Core i7 3940XM, 32GB RAM, GTX 980M, 256GB Samsung mSATA Drive, 2x 1TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD, and the somewhat rare touch screen module. It's a beast of a machine, these era of Precision laptops are an example in proper build quality - a lot of manufacturers of modern day trashtops could learn a thing or two from these machines/

Nowadays is hard to find quality laptop, btw this one is about 4KG, pretty heavy, very great quality build, even the charger is quality, the charger is bit large, literally brick size and mass :D Btw the better models are M6700 and M6800. Also the quality laptops are Alienware, also made by dell, my dream is Alienware M17x R4, its an older model but is totally awesome

I owned M4400, M6600, M6700, M4800, M6800. all are awesome machines. still have all M6*00. dell used to sell these machines at 35%-50% off when new version came. so bought most of these new at almost half price with 5 years of support. love these machines. best laptops I ever had. M6800 > M6700 > M6600. there were improvements from M6600 to M6700 to M6800 besides processors. Minor upgrades like better fans, better hinges, usb 3 (M6700) , additional screws for spare hardware (M6700) to fan grill (M6800), support for under the keyboard memory sticks to reduce flex (M6700), Better heat sinks (M6700)... made huge difference.

I absolutely love this computer! I originally bought a used M4600 in pretty good condition but a) wanted bigger and better graphics options, b) a bigger screen and c) the thermal performance of an i7-2820QM in a 15" laptop wasn't so good, especially since it would frequently overly heat my legs during heavy use. I then fixed up a very broken M6600 and now it's in amazing cosmetic condition, I can now use MXM B cards (mine has that same M6100), my CPU barely reaches 75 degrees at max load, and I may someday have a larger screen; unfortunately, my replacement was used and the 40 pin connector lost the solder pads to ground the connector, so it caused a short. I may be able to do so with the wonderfully placed 30 pin connector and daughter board but it gets really expensive and I couldn't guarantee it would work. Overall, the upgradability and usability of the M6600 is fantastic and I think this is my new favorite video of yours. Although it is basically the same computer, I'd highly recommend looking at the M6700, which is the Ivy Bridge version of this laptop. It has all the same great features and full support for Socket G2 chips, as well as better graphics card cooling. And if you are even more daring, there is a very elusive variant of the Precision M4000 and M6000 series that comes in cherry red, absolutely gorgeous. Very hard to get your hands on, though, almost easier to just buy the cherry color scheme parts and build it into a M6700.

Use laptop coolers
@genethebean75974 жыл бұрын
@@nucleargaming4036 Nah, for this purpose the temps don't seem to impact performance, and the CPU temps barely hit 90 with a max load on both the GPU and CPU. The main issue is that there is a lot of heat soakage in the bottom panel from both fin assemblies, causing the bottom cover to heat up to extremely high temperatures in the center-rear. If it were on a desk all day long, however, this wouldn't be so much of an issue. Plus, I don't think most laptop coolers would be able to contain this chonk.

I got hold of a M6400 many years ago for very little money. Amazing machine and I still have it. Not that portable but you can move it. It was pretty well specced but the person who ordered it cheaped out and got it with just a 2Ghz dual core. I upped the RAM to 8GB, swapped in a 250GB SSD, loaded in a 500GB HDD for data storage, plugged in a backlit keyboard and installed the bluetooth module. Also plugged in a USB3 express card. All great. I also bought a 2GHz quad core CPU. I then looked up how to swap that out...and it was not fun, lot of cables to pull out, screen removal etc. I just left it. For a couple of years it sat there laughing at me, goading me to do it. I then thought I best had, so I spent an afternoon doing it. In the end I managed to get the new CPU in without having to remove the screen and pull everything out. It was tight but it all worked. My other half still uses it if she needs to go work in an office. It gets some looks! There is an orange metallic case option but I would not go that far...

Last of it's kind was the m6800. I got mine last year for $450, without a drive, cause I had my own ssds. I did pay another $80 and got from 16 to 32 gigs of RAM. 4810 qm and Quadro k3100 may not sound much on paper, but man this thing runs 3-4 vms no problem, while I am testing other stuff on the host os. It weighs A LOT. But it's built like an actual tank. Has 2 msata slots. 2 mini pcie for wifi and/or mmc card. A physical wifi kill switch, gigabyte lan port, display port, dedicated microphone Jack. And the speakers are unbelievablely loud with actual bass you can actually enjoy. No wonder these things were around $3500 or more when they were new. It took me 2 months to find one but man am I happy to own this absolute unite of a mobile workstation that still doesn't have any competition. I wish dell kept this kind of built quality alive as a separate niche.

Nice upgrade! Although I haven't had one myself, I really like this laptop , due to the upgradability. I believe that ALL laptops should be built like this. This really is a beast of a laptop: upgradable CPU, upgradable GPU, two disk drive slots in addition to an optical drive (extremely rare - most laptops either give the option for one HDD and the DVD, or 2x HDD but no DVD - not both 2x HDD and DVD), and also four memory slots. Some desktop PCs don't even have 4x RAM slots! Also, you did the exact same things that I would have done: 32GB DDR3 RAM (if there's the option for 32GB, why not - most laptops will only take 16GB so this is better), a 500GB SSD for the OS (480GB is close enough) and a 2TB data drive. This is one of the best laptop upgrade videos I have seen - no compromises made here.

I upgraded it to a Core i7 2960XM @ 2.7Ghz x 4, Nvidia GTX680M MXM out of a Dell Alienware laptop w/4Gb GDDR5 VRAM with Nvidia drivers and a custom config file, a 240Gb Kingston Black SSD SATA & a 750Gb 7200 RPM HDD storage drive, 16Gb DDR3 Corsair Vengeance RAM and an Intel b,g,n 2.5Ghz/5Ghz wifi card with BT built in (can't remember the model but can find it if someone wants to know) all on Windows 10 Pro activated and driver's fully working. Had to get the 240w power brick to keep all of that going smoothly. It was a true beast for what it was and was able to play quite a few games on medium settings with no real issues, including Far Cry Primal.

Just got my own monster. Thanks for showing me this beast. My m6600 came with just 2gb of ram and missing some more parts so I'm using it with a linux live usb while I gather the rest of the parts.

I have the M6800 the daddy of them all with the highest end i7 of the time. These machines were so soilidly built and with an SSD are really fast. To think you have room for 3 drives is brilliant. So well built and designed and are really solid, they do not make them like this anymore that's for sure, so I must tear it down and do some maintenance on it. The fans rarely come on, I have 32gb Ram in it and a 4gb nvidia quadro in it I think. these machines don't break. Thanks for the great video my man!
@VinylToVideo2 жыл бұрын
I just bought two of these machines refurbished on sale and in the rare red color (well, the M6700.. I think yours is three years newer than the M6600 in the video and mine in the middle) and plan to use them for years. They have 16 GB of RAM but will upgrade them to 32 later if I feel the need (and when it's cheaper to do so, lol), and of course grabbed them both with 512 gig SSDs. Don't know about the GPU but will upgrade if I have to (listing made them sound like graphics were just integrated, so possible removed.. either that or they listed nothing because of the possibility of there being several GPU combinations). Overnight the price went up $80 if I were to order another two so I think I did well. It's pretty funny to think that I am interested in buying a 10 year old computer. In fact it may even be an older machine than my current one, though it does have a better processor and the SSD and of course will be fresh. Imagine though in 2010 wanting to buy a machine from 2000! But it will do everything I want it to and probably even play relatively modern games (which I don't really use them for). For more than double the money of what I paid for two, I could get a brand new machine with identical specs (of course, 12th gen i7 vs 2nd gen, DDR5 RAM vs DDR3, decent GPU vs ?.. is the high price of new worth it? Don't know, though in another 10 years the newer machine would be better to have I suppose).

This is the first time I've heard that I've heard of a SSD that failed
@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew4 жыл бұрын
Yes, SSD fails, all SSD's 2.5" or M.2 on Windows or Mac. The SSD have life span, also it depends how the SSD is used, conditions, stress. But compared to HDD, the SSD fail very rare.

@@vitorbatistateixeira758 his thermal paste application was good since its a direct die. Spread method on direct die was alot better than dot since it covered the whole die perfectly and the added dot on the middle to reduce the air bubbles after putting the heatsink together. I have a similar but more budget oriented laptop, the XPS L702X. It's from 2011 as well, with the same processor (i7 2670QM), 8GB DDR3, a 900p display, and a 3 GB GT 555M GPU. It's never let me down, I use it practically every day, and despite having a dedicated gaming PC, I can't stop using it - I would be lying if I said I didn't have a sentimental attachment to it.

@Xcalibur prob proccessor could be improved more. But graphics is harder to find With base fan u can support something more but could be more an office laptop than othen thing
@kama99ify4 жыл бұрын
@Xcalibur Not only that but the motherboard socket allows max up to i7-3940XM, and the GPU socket MXM-B (v3.0) has an RTX 2080 available, but for the price, and the bottleneck, I dont think its worth it. Interestingly enough the cooling is made to manage much worse temperatures as this laptop is rated for a FirePro GPU and they are well known for their food cooking abilities :)

I didn't know you could reuse them thermal pads, usually when I open up a laptop... those pads are usually disintegrated and fibers from the inside like frayed out and I almost always need to replace them with a new one. This is a very well made video and tutorial for newly started people like me to learn.
