I must be the same age as your mom because I have the same bag and I just cleaned it from my daughter. Any idea how to repair or change the hardware? I sprayed the little zipper tags with gold paint and I painted the zipper pull blue. But the hardware holding the strap-on is very chipped and ugly. Are you keeping yours that way? Enjoy your bag! I loved mine in 1982!

I will be keeping it the way I have it. Although, I may consider changing the strap since it's pretty worn. Are you not able to paint the hardware?

Can’t you use a coarse brush to get rid of the powdery interior and then vacuum?

Yup, you probably could. I just found my method worked best for me.
