RESURFACE CONCRETE DRIVEWAY (PART 2) Mike Haduck

I resurfaced the same concrete driveway two years later, for a second time, I had a lot of questions and hits and wanted to explain it much better, it is nothing more than an old school depression era fix that I seen the old timers in the business use to repair , patch and save money, All my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing any type of work to consult professional help.

Hi Mike. I am 60 years old and live in North Alabama. I just started working on my front concrete driveway. You make it so easy to refurbish the concrete without all the expense. It is so easy to do without all the hassle for me. Thank you so much for the videos! Very educational.

Brush is best. I live in Old Forge so Mike's advice is perfect. I'm 69 years and I don't need to do things the hard way only to get the same conclusion as the hard way. I'm not in the business but I have a sidewalk repair job going on and all got all the info I need from Mike. Social Media had made people become so literal. Like come on people, Mike never said this is a fix all. It is putting lipstick on it and making it look nice and some prevention maintenance. But some of these people think this should hold the golden gate bridge. As for me I appreciate these tips and tricks to dress something up, and a form of maintenance. I patch concrete driveways a lot. Me and the customer both understand it is not the same as if I rip the whole damn thing up. But it is affordable and slows down the chipping away. Again thank Mr. Mike for the great videos and product knowledge.

Hi Mike, I always get around to watching one or more of your videos. I have an old house down here in Southern New Jersey where our weather is not that much different then yours. My 60 year old concrete driveway has held up okay but needs a face lift. I was considering a chip and tar covering but I'm certain the price will be prohibitive. So, I began to think about just patching and whitewashing and this led me back to your wonderful videos. God bless you. I wish you many years of good health and travel.

Yup, I have done this type of repair in Ontario many times, it truly is not permanent, but at the same time allows you to spruce up your porch top on the cheap, and very quickly. Same can be said for using a masonry coating in the same fashion for making your parging look like new. Price wise this makes sence more and more considering the costs of replacement. Good job Mike!

'...it truly is not permanent,..' what is permanent anyway? nothing built is permanent. at least not in this part of Penna. close to Mike's city. funny how people will use blacktop re-surfacer and asphalt sealer without calling it permanent but hesitate to resurface with cement because it's not permanent. i'd like to experiment on my own driveway. bond half with the commercial cement "glue" and half with Mike's suggested Portland paint. see which lasts the best and maybe why.

Guess I am not young anymore (60s) and so I like old school.. LOL! I really can't tell any difference between brush painting with Portland and using a sponge float with the Concrete Resurfacer. I am going to concrete paint my driveway now! I am in Florida and hope I don't need to do it every year.. . Thank you for sharing this old school technique:)!

I watched the "how to" for stone over concrete for patio, and it seems ideal, but flagstone here is very costly and there are not that many outlets here in Central California. I also need to replace an aging asphalt driveway, but looking at pavers here locally, after a few years, they all badly fade. I would prefer real cobble. What is your view for granite cobble?

you have a way with presentation Mike; they are very effective and enjoyable. i've reviewed this one a few times as there are a lot of concrete drives in this area and most of the owners use ice and snow melter's. so...there is accelerated wear. done a few and do add washed/coarse sand to the Portland cement. not a lot but enough to add traction in the Winter. we get slippery conditions and more grit seems to help pedestrian and auto movement. just a float or broom finish doesn't work as well when the surfaces wear down . but then, as you point out, it's time to recoat.

Hi Mike, I live in Sub Tropical Brisbane, Australia. It ranges between 102° - 45° F. through the year. If I read you right its the freezing and ice that breaks the surface down over time. So if we don't get ice is a coating like this going to last a lot longer. I was thinking i would spray a clear sealer on it as well to prevent mould and algae which is the main problem we have in warm humid conditions

Wow, thanks for all the info. You remind me of my dad. I bought a 2 year old house. Has a new concrete drive that looks that looks like the previous owner used some rock salt on it. "Spalling" has left some areas with lots of little craters/pock marks. I'm gonna try the concrete resurfacer stuff to fill in the marks and make it all smooth again. Central Indiana so we get lots of snow too. It's not a big drive - about the same size as your example. Concrete company quoted $3800 to come put a top coat on it. Hmm, that sounds crazy high! I'll try that old school way first. Spend that $$ on other stuff!

Thanks for the advice! It's more of a cosmetic thing - just want the drive to look "better". I'm ok with doing the labor/sweat equity. The unsalted areas look fine.

Reminds me of why I gave up on installing tile. I've never taken the time to find it but there has got to be real documentation out there for these processes. There is no way construction companies are calling up grandpa to get the family recipe for their projects.

@@MikeHaduck that's even more troubling and more reason to avoid concrete unless truly no alternatives. And when we install concrete we should treat it like a delicate flower and not subject it to moisture, freeze thaw, etc. And you say it yourself over and over, asphalt is better, that's not just in PA, asphalt is actually repairable!

Very cool Mike. I had no idea that this was even a thing! I'm tempted to try it on our busted up driveway. My only concern is a sunken block with a significant crack. I think I'll start with grinding the crack down to help with snow removal. Thanks for the video!

If it's too deep, you might want to think about slab-jacking that sunken area before applying this Portland paint.

I've done a few small projects this way. Painted over repairs with portland. I did my 1300 sq ft driveway yesterday. If I had used store bought resurfacer I would have needed about 18 bags since manufacturer states 70 sq ft per bag. At $24 per bag it would have been a small fortune just to clean up my driveway. I used the "old school" way instead. I used just over 1 full 94 lb bag of portland. I have enough left over in the second bag to do another whole driveway or a second coat next year. I ended up buying a broom from the dollar store and using that to apply. It worked great. The dollar store brooms are small (about 8") and have softer bristles than a normal broom. It essentially worked like a big paint brush. I've tried a roller in the past and 5 minutes in realized it was a bad option. I also wouldn't recommend a squeegee. I think it would apply the material too thick. From my experience, you want to get the material as thin as possible. Ive found that when its thicker it is more prone to chipping. Portland cement doesnt have alot of strength without aggregate so if its applied thick it will crumble. It definiyely.does not come out perfect. Some color inconsistencies and some brush marks show. But honestly the expensive resurfacets don't come out looking 100% either. All and all it's a great quick fix. My 1300 sq ft drive took about 3.5 hrs for me with no help and taking my time. Thanks Mike!

Hi Mike, @16:40 you mention sealing. I am considering this step, but worried about next portland paint jobs. I'm afraid the remaining sealer will impair the paint from sticking. Kinda like trying to paint over silicone Reason I am considering sealer is I have a lot of maple tree around my driveway, and last autumn, dead wet leaves left ugly and stubborn stains all over the unsealed portland paint.
