Why are there so many workers in tarmac gangs. Surely everything you see in this video including machines , 3 or 4 lads could do this? It just seems silly having so many doing next to nothing.

You need a lot of men on shovels and sweeping. Yes, the machinery does most of the work. However, with tarmacking, it goes off very quickly. You have to work very fast loads of shoveling to do round the bell mouths, cleaning up, selling a long list of jobs and shoveling unless your an athlete you need someone to swap out with after a while so if you had less people you d have fatigue setting in and your crew would not be nearly as effective. It's easy to say alot standing about however loads of people doing different jobs and it's not a job you can go at flat out on a shovel all day much respect to these men.
