The problem with starting fluid, is that the diesel has no throttle blades, so most of the fluid evaporates immediately. I've found Ford IDIs like WD40!

I just recently completely restored a 1986 f-250 4x4 with a 6.9. I've restored a few other gas trucks and a 1966 mustang. But this is my very first diesel ever. I've always wanted a Ford diesel truck but refuse to pay the ridiculous prices people ask for there diesel's. I was looking on Facebook 2 summer's ago seen a add for a 86 ford diesel for 600 dollars well by the time I made it to the guy's house to see the truck he said 400 dollars would take it today. I bought it. Had to buy a rust free 86 gas cab so then I had to pull the diesel harness out payed a guy 300 dollars to completely restore the diesel harness because it was chopped up over the years. The hardest part to find was a 1980 through 86 bed it took me 4 months to find a rust free perfect bed for that truck then had to pay 700 dollars for it. It's on the road now completely restored to factory condition and using all true factory ford parts except for the vinyl floor mat that's aftermarket. I just love the sound of these IDI diesel's but I've learned 1 thing these 6.9 don't like hills. Have fun restoring yours. The prices of these idi trucks are on the rise. A rust free 1980s diesel core supports are IMPOSSIBLE to find I had to cut the bottom half of my diesel core off and weld it the the top portion of a gas core support. They don't make 1983 through 86 diesel core supports aftermarket anymore.

As far as your O rings go, you can get comparable ones that will work at Ace hardware stores, I own a 1988 F250 with the 7.3 IDI and they use the same rings. I tried them on a whim one day since Ace was closer to my house and they worked and well. Bring one to the store and get them from the plumbing repair section. If your transmission shifts well you likely have the C6 transmission, it is one of the toughest and best Ford transmissions ever made. It's not the most finessed, it definitely is crude and has tall gears which show at highway speeds, but damn tough and reliable. It is what's in mine.

With IDI's you should NEVER use ether in conjunction with glow plugs. If a glowplug is hot and ether gets into the prechamber it can blow the chamber out and destroy the block deck. If you need to use ether make sure the glowplugs are disabled or leave the key on long enough for them to cool down. Always a good idea to spray ether onto the filter element to diffuse it and keep it from all going into one cylinder.

Couple tips. Dont use the glow plugs with ether. If you gonna use ether leave the key on for a couple minutes until the glow plugs cycle then cool back down. I've seen ether and glow plugs mixed resulting in a blown apart intake manifold and I've heard stories of heads blown off. you didn't give it enough of a chance with out the ether. Also a idi will not fire off ether alone it needs fuel too so if your not getting smoke yet from the exhaust ether will only ether lock it (when it sounded like a gas engine with the timg too far advanced and you said that the batteries were low) but otherwise solid content

These engines are known for lasting a long time- HOWEVER, ether or starting fluid can literally destroy them the first time you use it. It can blow the precups out of the head and into the cylinder
@nikoschopshop
@nikoschopshop 3 жыл бұрын
Most dangerous thing when using ether is the glow plugs igniting it at the wrong time and place. If you leave them cook and shut off it's not the biggest death sentence a lot of people say it is. But to get old hoopty garbage to sputter to life it works fine!

Diesels take a shitload of power to turn over when cold. The glow plugs pull something like 50 amps just by themselves. The starter is like 3x bigger than a regular car starter and absolutely drink amperage.

@nikoschopshop

It works fine and tons of people do it. Where you think the mechanical pump pushes fuel? Anything over 9psi starts to advance ignition timing. The best upgrade is the facet electric lift pump they use on refrigerated trailers

Mostly works as a band aid to bleed the air out of the system when you don't want to fix air leaks. Doesn't affect performance at all being as you can only feed the injection pump 7-9psi before it starts advancing the timing. This truck has a 12v pump on it already and leaks fuel lol
