I just picked up a husqvarna 3120K 16" saw with the oil injected 119cc 9.2hp engine and I ordered the 60mm piston/ring/cylinder kit on ebay for $85 and installed it easy, just 4 screws right on the top of the head so very easy to get to. I ported the muffler outlet and added a 2nd exhaust tip and this saw is an absolute beast now. Only problem is it weighs 44 lbs since it's a racine rail products ultra kut 2 but it costs $2600 and I bought it for only $40 non running and greasy and rusty. Took it home and added some 2 stroke mix (I don't trust the oil injection system) and fuel immediately started shooting out of the fuel line. Replaced the fuel line and fuel filter and it started right up so I washed it, removed all of the rust and polished it up real good and now it looks tough and runs very strong. This saw is so big that it's impressive to look at just sitting on the shelf of my office. I run it with the top cover off and a k&n air filter on it because the muffler, head and carb are so huge on this saw that it looks better with no top cover. I have only $160 total tied up in this saw including the $40 for the saw, the piston kit and a few cosmetic parts so I'm very happy with it. It already has the bar oiler that's being used for the oil injection and it also has a chain tensionor so I could probably just change the belt pulley sprocket it has now to a chain sprocket and reroute the bar oiler hoses back to the bar and this saw could be used as a chainsaw. However it's worth more money as a chop saw so I'll leave it as is.

Tune richer next time and run 25-33:1 gas-oil ratio with a good synthetic oil. This will stop this ever happening, no matter how dull the chain is or any other external factor that can catch you by surprise.

Blew up my 3120 yesterday on a red oak as well, did exactly what yours did. You should look into adding a hand winch to your mill. I did, and it makes life a lot easier.

Damn! I actually had the hand winch on another job, and blew up the saw again! I got an email from a logger in vermont who said he’s running 32:1 in his 3120 with bars over 42”. In on my third top end so I’m going to try and run rich and hope for the best!!

@@MakeEverything You should run 32:1 on any saw mate, synthetic oil preferably as it wont smoke. Too much oil never hurts so long the carb is tuned right. On the contrary even, I never saw a chainsaw with other 1500 work hours ran at 50:1. But ive seen dozens with over 3000 hours with spotless insides ran at 33:1 or richer ratios. That should say it all.

Just a friendly FYI, when assembling new parts, whether it be just rings or complete top end, bearings etc. Be sure to use 2-stroke oil and not regular engine oil as a lubricant.
@em4703

Its ok with oil, its not enough to cause issues and its quickly spit out during startup. Back in the day regular motor oil was used by everyone as mix lubricant, 16:1 ratio. Saws ran fine, just smoked alot

Is it just me or does 90 psi seem really low for compression? Especially for a big saw that that girl. Sthil 460 you got like 160 psi am I wrong?
@jasonfontenot596
@jasonfontenot596 Жыл бұрын
90 psi is extremely low like barely enough compression to run... he should be up over 150psi.. maybe he had the decomp pressed in when he took the test.. all of my larger husqvarnas are over 175psi, 181se, 394xp, 3120xp. Could also be the aftermarket cylinder causing it, he did say it was a cheaper kit so id assume not a oem husqvarna piston and cylinder being they are over 500 new, the squish band is rarely set up tight on the aftermarket kits unless you cut the base.

That saw was run far too lean pulling a heavy load like milling. These saws use the fuel ratio to cool the piston, the oil seals the rings and lubes the bearings. That knockoff cylinder won't make the same power or pull the same chain speeds in the cut. A lot of that aluminum and chrome plating was sent through the bottom of the block, it should have been pulled all the way down and inspected and cleaned.

130 or 9 bar is perfect... If the cylinder wears in, the compression will increase at least 20% Most chainsaws have 90psi or 7 bar compression. If you want more power, do gasket delete or grind down the base. .85mm squish should be max 1mm is probably good enough for this saw since the rod may stretch at high rpm. Also... porting would do a lot of good. Unless you dont get new rubber boot

Not finding out why it leaned out and burned the piston, faulty crank seal, or carb or fuel line & filter etc. and it’s just gonna burn up again! Things just don’t go bad without a reason ! Now go find the problem!

Running too lean on the big bar. I run 32:1 now!
@MrsSunshine75
@MrsSunshine75 3 жыл бұрын
Not an oil to fuel ratio problem at all! Lack of fuel all together! Changing the ratio will not fix a lean condition, look at the piston on the side that faces the exhaust port, lean hot not lack of oil! FIND THE PROBLEM! There’s an air leak or fuel restriction somewhere, get a pressure/vac tool and find it.
@SagaSeaCraft
@SagaSeaCraft 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrsSunshine75 Exactly! Too many of these youtube whores have no idea what they're talking about. Yes, to keep the rings at max sealing and compression at high engine-loads, a lower fuel/oil ratio is better. Professional arborists typically run between 24:1 through 32:1, the higher the load on the saw, the lower the fuel/oil ratio for better power and lubrication. However, what I see here is a much too lean condition. With these newer saws, most of the carbs do not have a high-speed circuit adjustable needle due to the infallible (ridiculous!) EPA folks' demands. You should either re-jet the high-speed circuit to enrichen the high-speed fuel/air mixture, or purchase a better carb (Walbro WB32 would work perfectly if you can link it up to the controls) with both low- and high-speed needles. The original piston clearly shows signs of too lean a fuel/air mixture. The MakeEverything guy should really invest a bit of time in investigating and researching the proper methods of tuning the carb properly. One good source is Dragonfly75 -- he has a lot of really good insights on small 2-stroke tuning and design, air/fuel and fuel/oil mixture recommendations depending on engine types and loads. The big problem this this guy is going to run into if he merely lowers the fuel/oil ratio, is that he is going to create even a leaner condition than he previously had without adjusting his carb mixture. Changes in amounts of oil in the fuel requires air/fuel mixture adjustments -- lower fuel/oil ratios require richer fuel/air mixtures since the oil does not contribute much to the combustion. In fact, the oil mostly separates from the fuel/air mixture within the crankcase, where it collects and also lubes the cylinder and piston and bearings, then eventually it gets expelled or burned once it has been heated with time and breaks down into smaller molecules. So every time you go changing something like fuel/oil ratios or use a different gas or oil, you have to adjust the carb mixtures. The saw manufactures, courtesy of the EPA, have really destroyed the user's ability to adjust the saw according to it's workload requirements and altitude conditions. That's why pro-arborists and loggers have their newer saws modified by small chainsaw shops that know the best mods to keep saws running well in all sorts of working environments.
