Anyone remember buying candy by the piece or hot roasted nuts by the 1/4 pound from the candy counter at Sears back in the day?

The two I remember most as a kid that aren't around any more are Service Merchandise, which sold like house wears and jewelry but I use to love going there because there were these little check lists and pencils attacked to the carts that my mom would let me doodle on. And there was Steinbach, a generic department store that I have vivid memories of getting lost there during Christmas time because I had stopped to look at the novelty displace of cool telephones when I was around 5. There is is just places like KB toys and Walden books.

My parents loved going to Service Merchandise! I can't remember all they sold, but I do remember jewelry being there. Also, Eckerd was close to my heart because we'd go there after church to get candy! That Eckerds was in between the church and church parking lot, so we'd pass it every time.

Does anyone remember Buffums? In the early 80's they had a promotion where you could get Buffy the Christmas bear, which was a koala bear wearing a scarf and knit hat that had a little mini me koala in his (her?) pouch. I loved that bear when I was 5.

Don't know none of those but i relate to remembering/confusing the old names of stores. Big lots was Pick and save, kohls was mervins, Macy's out here was Robinson's may, and cvs was save on.
@kethertomalkuthorchard16636 жыл бұрын
AliciaStyleAndGrace yeah Pic n Save. Turned to Beeeeeg Lots! Kinda gross. Good plates and table decorations when I was first a poor little kid in my first apartment in 1993 though. Not the last time I looked though it had gone down the hills. You know in Palm Desert California I think there was a mall that had a Robinson’s and a Macy at the same time of you can believe that. Is that even possible? Wow they should give someone else a turn! And YES CVS was Sav On. You know it is funny in a way this isn’t just about a name change. I expect the companies to be different after the name change but now I am not sure, is it a new company or do these places only change their names? Two Guys turned to Gemco I think or Fed Mart. I don’t know but these stores are where we go for almost all that we need and as little kids we learn life lessons like not eating the candy or swiping the Velamints that mom said no when you begged her to buy them. The way the store handles little things like a mom trying to teach her kids to take back a candy she was walking out with shapes our earliest life lessons. But the name changes must have made me forget a lot because I am already having tons of memories come back, even about family I only saw once or twice on vacations to Disneyland when we would go to the drugs store to get stuff like sunscreen and new flip flops. Some of those cousins have died and I miss them a lot. I love this channel and Jenny is perfect for making me feel my Latin roots. Even the clips about old department stores are a cultural heritage necessity! Thank you both Jenny and AliciaStykeAndGrace you for the memories! (No copyright infringement intended Bob Hope so don’t be coming for me on your big ugly head golf cart mobile)

Robinsons-May (My mom liked going there a lot) Mervyn's (my aunt and cousin worked there almost until it closed) Montgomery Wards (We bought the first washer and dryer for the house we live in now in the mid 90's) And my favorite store that no longer exists is Borders :( it was one of the first bookstore I ever went to. In high school my friends and I would sit in the store for hour until we were told to get out or our parents started calling us asking were we where. I was so sad when they closed the last one. One of the stores got divided and turned into an Ulta beauty supply and a trader joe's, the one closest to my house got turned into a gym. :'(

Macy’s is a side part of our family history for generations. They were an exclusive dealer of my husband’s family’s pottery and plates and tea sets. Little teapots. Stuff like that from the Wedgwood surname both his great great grandparents gave him. WooWoo! Racy! Racy Macy! The names of these stores and oh how funny you sound like the woman who helped my mom raise me. Gigi Miles. I don’t remember her maiden name but she loved West Virginia and Chula Vista was so so to her but it was there she met me and my kindergarten age dance partner Mario Lopez. She loved how cute we were. And we danced to the real deal no auto tuned babies. Our dance teacher was a race car driver as well as a chorus line choreographer. Ricki Adney Geary is the one to hand the credit to for our hard dancing work ethics. Heather O’Rourke and some other great kids danced at our place. I love you Jenny!

Hi! Actually Burdines did not take over Jordan Marsh, they were two separate entities that co-existed for many years in Dadeland Mall and probably other malls. Jordan Marsh was one of the ends and Burdines was in the middle with Penney's at the other end. Jordan Marsh closed in the 90s and Burdines took over their space until eventually Macy's bought them out.
