When I was 8 I used to go to bed bath and beyond with my dad, they had a section with a bunch of different curtains for sale and I would hide in them and have my dad look for me. We never actually bought anything other than candy though because of how expensive it was. I visited the same bed bath and beyond a couple weeks ago and found it closed down. I put my phone against the window to take a picture and get a look inside. It was weird seeing it all run down and empty... it definitely brought back a lot of bittersweet memories.

They inherited a concept that was done better by Linen’s n Things. Their stores have remained nearly identical for 25 years. Who precisely does this cater to? You have to have a mix of fashion for apartment renting younger crowds. A lot of younger people are taking to cooking at home so demos of cookware and appliances would generate some life. Otherwise you’re walking around a dead white box that Homeplace and such were and they failed. The white clinical look does no favors, it doesn’t feel homey.

Linens n' Things used to be great. Anna's Linens was great too, they took up the 'medium size' footprint that most Dollar Stores take up, and they carried a lot of Bed/Bath/Decor stuff BB*B has, but at actually affordable prices. They had kind of a Tuesday Morning feel too. The Anna's Linens that was in a shopping center I used to work was always busy and seemed to be a great tenant, but the company went belly-up.

The trend now for the "trendy set" with money to spend, buy a bottle of Aesop hand soap. When it runs out refill it with a cheaper brand hand soap that you like. $85 for a cheap made in China soap pump is obscene even for those of us who can afford such things. As for toilet brushes, Costco has some nice OXO two packs for $20.00 or so, simple white. As for hand towels and linens, alway, always select white, the best hotels, homes and whatnot always use white linens. I buy my towels at Ikea, some nice large plush ones for reasonable prices. In white. For extra rolls of toilet paper, find a nice reed basket that you like for a low price and place your extra rolls of toilet paper in that. As for art in the bathroom, less is more. I think that the half bath might need a better mirror with a frame, perhaps a different color of paint on the wall and a new light fixture. Bed Bath & Beyond is dead as far as I am concerned. Its best days were in 1997.

I can tell you that every transaction will involve a complicated and irritating coupon and a manager literally has to come (after we call them by walkie-talkie) and turn a key on the register in order to take (or not take) said coupon. While the entire line stares daggers and waits for their turn to be denied or approved. The high prices are somewhat intended to factor in the coupons and sales and the eventual move to clearance. Now most of the brands are becoming BBB store owned brands in order to manage costs. Just shop the clearance section, if at all.

Bed Bath & Beyond owns World Market, which I worked for during the pandemic. Our World Market location was shut down at the end of 2020 **allegedly** due to a leasing disagreement over something as silly as the higher ups not liking the shopping center we were in, even though we were usually their highest performing store in the state. We were always busy, always had products in demand, so many people were upset when we closed, yet the Bed Bath & Beyond down the road that's in a true dead shopping center remains open to this day and has hardly any foot traffic. I've heard of so many other World Market locations closing around the same time we did, and it seriously makes no sense to me why they would keep BB&B open and continue to lose money, but close their WM stores which are actually up to date with the times, have interesting good quality products, and a solid customer base. If they were smart they would put their funds and efforts into WM and slowly start to weed out BB&B, but clearly whoever is in charge of making decisions has their head stuck in a bucket or something...truly makes no sense to me. They're going to end up tanking not only the parent company, but all of the other chains they own.

@Thomas-lk5cu2 жыл бұрын
The thing about BB&B (and similar stores) is they aren’t inspiring at all. If their prices were at least competitive, they wouldn’t suffer. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. Look at IKEA, people go there for the experience, to hang out, and get inspired from their many displays and showrooms. This is what stores SHOULD look like, if they want to compete against online shopping.

If only they'd offered more in the Beyond section... $70???? Good on you for leaving it there. VERY quack. FDA wouldn't endorse that with a 39-and-1/2 foot pole. Another great video! Keep them coming.

My local Bed Bath & Beyond added a huge cosmetics and health/ beauty department a few years ago. Honestly the pricing there is pretty comparable to target but I’ve literally never seen anyone in that department, and it’s stuff everyone buys on a regular basis. Target seems to be the go to store for furnishing a dorm or first apartment, and that’s a niche BBB could have definitely captured if they tried.
@Keykatriz2 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine shopping at Bed, Bath and Beyond unless there was a wild sale going. Like I hate saying "I'll just buy it on Amazon" but you get a thousand times the selection and much better prices. The prices of trash cans in general always stuns me. It's a container I'm putting my trash! I want to pay no money for this! lmao. The quartz roller is mostly bull...it can feel nice and there's some minor benefits to massaging your skin but I'm sure whatever quartz roller they had there was 5x more expensive than it should be. You can get really cheap jade/quartz rollers, it's nice to have for skin care (you can use it cool down, put on lotions, just give yourself a massage, etc) but not worth paying more than $15 for.

For me, BB&B falls into the category of stores I've seen around for ages, but have no recollection of setting foot inside. Like, they just exist as backdrops on highways for me, and nothing more.

I worked in a Belk’s home department in the 90’s. I loathed it. The merchandise is nearly impossible to make look tidy, and it only takes one of those “has to touch everything” people to ruin hours of work. Entire shifts would pass without a paying customer, while you got further and further behind on your quota. That said, I enjoyed BB&B for the most part, except that they tended to have way too much As Seen on TV stuff.
@matteng14482 жыл бұрын
Funny you mentioned target, Those shelving units and a lot of their chairs that are supposedly their brand look exactly like targets brand. A lot of the stuff that you bought also looks like stuff from target for less than quarter of the price. As for that ultrasonic scrubber I can speak to you from experience. They are good for doing extractions without tearing your face up and also exfoliate your skin in a non-harsh way
@nslouka902 жыл бұрын
They probably are, there are a number of cheap white label manufacturers that make things like lamps, tv stands, bookshelves that are sold at big box stores for them to put their own label on it and sell it (and make) for relatively low prices.

I’m old enough to remember them fighting it out with Linens-N-Things back in the 90s. I gave up on them when I went in on a Sunday and could not find a kitchen garbage can or a dish drying rack. All their products were just randomly thrown up on the shelves like the dollar store. Shame. Feel bad for their employees.

My mom used to work at one of the NY based stores, she was part of the restocking team mostly. Told me a few stories of injuries she's gotten. One involved a concussion complete with a cut on her forehead. It probably wasn't the fault of the store being poorly done or anything but it definitely was quite the accident.

I _like_ Bed Bath and Beyond, but it’s a bit oversized for what it’s worth. Like the amount of things sold could be displayed in 3/4ths the space, or less. Same with BuyBuy Baby, which is just BB&B but with baby stuff.

Thanks for the video!! 😊 As a BBB employee. I understand. The new private label persona essentially ruined the whole essence of the store. So much so that only two years after “making” these labels…we are now starting to discontinue them 😳😨 Our products have gone WAY downhill and we either have things too cheap or extremely expensive: no middle ground :/ And damaged products is becoming a MUCH bigger problem. You outlined some common problems well. Our bath section is very sub par right now…we are selling a lot of comforters and smaller baking/kitchen supplies. And yes…hours are HORRIBLE right now I can attest 🫣😐 I’d be looking for a new job…but I might be moving soon anyways so things are in limbo right now but yeah the hours are putrid (actually looked fairly neat compared to my mess!) Anyways good video and I’m here for questions/comments :)

BBB was by far my favorite retail store I've ever worked for. They paid very well for full time work and had great benefits and nice vacation time. They spent a lot of time teaching the employees product knowledge. Odd enough I actually enjoyed those sales roleplaying games they used to make us do.

At my local BB&B in NJ, they had the bright idea of devoting a decent amount of floor space to "gourmet" and specialty foods. They even installed reefer and freezer units. I think they were trying to compete with Trader Joe's but it was a complete bust. Who the hell thinks of buying a $15 bottle of Greek olives when you go pick up a toilet paper holder? Dumb decision from the start.

I've never been into a bed bath and beyond before. Normally I get my bath stuff from Ross. I do find it funny that bb&b is having money problems and there answer is more expensive items that no one can afford.
@MM-fe9mz2 жыл бұрын
Only problem with towels at Ross is cant get matching ones in different sizes many times. Bbb is just an extra stop I'd rather skip most times when most likely gonna walk out not buying anything. Or heck I once went to look for a hairdryer for my sister, ended up buying one from Amazon while inside BBB. Stores like bbb and best buy have definitely struggled with adapting to the computer in our pockets decade.
