As an European, CVS has always been a favourite must-visit store every time I go to the US. It's so quintessentially American. Just for comparison, the medicine market is so heavily regulated in Austria that you cannot purchase a single pill without personally speaking to a pharmacist. Pharmacies are tiny shops where you can only pick up medicine, both prescription and non-prescription. The doses are also tiny...you pay around $10 for a blister pack of 6 ibuprofens. The first time seeing a bottle of 200 Advils just sitting on a shelf was utterly mind boggling. We used to buy those as souvenirs.

former CVS employee here. I left for a few reasons, but one of the main ones was the cleanliness of the store. the coolers were full of mold, there was mold and water damage on the ceiling panels, and every week when i'd do outdates there was somehow more expired stuff than the last time i looked (i'm talking like 1-2 years past expiration date). not to mention a rat problem, me and some of the pharmacists were constantly finding rat droppings on the break room tables lol. my store specifically had a 'seasonal' section, which was where we just threw a bunch of junk we didnt know what to do with. like, random pool/sand toys, shoes, and a tiny little shelf towards the back of the isle with random kid's toys. but if you tried to scan the items it would tell you they weren't on the planogram, and for some reason we never made planos for them despite a store inspector coming in telling us to. and it seems like a lot of people in the comments are talking about how its a little hard to track down an employee. this is because CVS as a company is notorious for its stores having staffing issues. pretty soon after i got hired it would just be me on the floor and a manager doing stuff in the office. my store was pretty big, so i was running around all over the place. likely, its probably just that one employee there. surprisingly though, my location had people coming in specifically to get photos developed and printed. it was actually my favorite part of the job, grabbing people's photo orders and putting them together and using the shitty kiosk lol. my store at least also offered a service for passport photos. that was also incredibly fun to do. i also get my medication from CVS, and thats really all i go there for. sometimes i'll kill two birds with one stone and grab some toiletries there or something too, but typically i go to target for that.

I think the state of CVS pharmacies are a large social commentary on the state of the economy in the US these days. CVS is THE chain pharmacy monopoly here. Many places of employment have it as the community provider of choice for prescriptions in their insurance policies. CVS keeps on understaffing and squeezing their in-store workforce. The patients are ever more squeezed by medications requiring coverage or prior authorizations. Most needing to go in for medications don't have the disposable money or time to peruse the aisles for anything anymore. So they are much better served to wait by the pharmacy until the very moment their prescription is ready. Those who have the time and money to spend shopping-for-fun anymore in-person will discriminate and choose much better environments in which to shop.

Fun fact: Longs Drugs was so ingrained in the culture here in Hawaii that when CVS bought out Longs, they opted to preserve the Longs branding on the stores statewide. Heck, even the Target pharmacies here are Longs branded instead of CVS branded! And the weekly Longs newspaper ads still draw in crowds of shoppers weekly. Granted, they’ve closed a few locations over the past few years, but I feel like they’re doing way better over here than Walgreens.

@miles_thomasАй бұрын
Related point about longs. IMO one of the mistakes made by Tesco Fresh & Easy is they did not partner with or acquire longs and just split the existing stores in a grocery side leaving a small pharma and h&b side.
@thespaceace56376 күн бұрын
I lived in Hawaii for a few years and I was surprised by how busy the Longs stores were. Yeah you could tell they had been integrated into CVS, but I thought the stores generally looked less "liminal" and depressing than mainland CVS stores and there were more employees around. Plus with Hawaii's liquor laws, they sell liquor in there and they didn't have a bad selection either. Generally I found it easier to find things I needed at Longs than most drug stores on the mainland. Like, they even had a small selection of fresh produce.

I worked at a local chain drugstore in the early 1970s - no comparison to CVS or Walgreens today. The store was brightly lit and full of merchandise that required 2-3 stockboys per shift to keep the shelves full and faced. There was always a crowd shopping, on the weekends in the summer it took two stockboys just to keep the beer cooler full. It was a busy place. CVS and all the current drugstore chains are depressing - dimly lit, bland neutral floors and walls and ugly plain displays. Nobody shops there because it's drab, boring and expensive. I still get surprised every time I walk in to any retail store in that there is nothing there I need or want. All stores could bounce right out of bankruptcy by actually offering what it is people want to buy. But then we'd need the manufacturers to return to producing, and I'm not sure now that the slide has gone so far that this is possible. People really don't want cheap, non-nutritional foods and beverages. They really don't want clothing and other products made out of crappy polymers and plastic. Everyone's tired of mass produced crap. Speaking of Claire's, when I was a teen girl, so long ago, I could wear anything Claire's made, and most importantly, I could afford whatever it was, and it didn't completely come apart in two weeks. Now, I am allergic to everything they make, it all has a life expectancy of a bag of chips, and is toxic and weird. The idea that "the people" will buy whatever is pushed at them, whether they like it or not, instead of letting things become popular organically, that only goes so far. I'd say soon we will be buying things that don't even exist, but we already are (insurance coverage, virtual apparel, fast fashion, etc.). How much further can it be watered down?

The problem with CVS is that they forced an East Coast Drug Store format (which is basically a pharmacy with a few extra aisles of notions) onto the larger sized stores in the West and Midwest that they acquired-Osco, Sav-On, Longs Drugs. Those stores were basically discount/variety stores with a pharmacy department-even selling electronics, garden supplies, toys and hobbies (especially Longs). So you have CVS trying to fill up a big store with its own retail format-which makes the store look half-empty. The same thing happened when Rite Aid bought Thrifty/Payless-who also ran large discount/drug formats. Walgreens went the other way...from large stores in downtown areas and major shopping centers to the corner convenience store format with a pharmacy.
@Markimark151Ай бұрын
@ this isn’t solely a problem with CVS, it’s drugstore chains in general have too many outdated locations that have dragged the company down. Rite Aid and CVS inherited so many large stores that were the size of Woolworths, I remember Longs Drugs and Thrifty’s being really dated, those stores barely got remodeled when they were bought out by CVS or Rite Aid, because they are too expensive to manage. My small CVS is actually doing fine, because they’re a newer location.
@jeremyloveslinuxАй бұрын
The polyester base isn’t that expensive. The most expensive part is the silver. In c41 it’s removed as part of the development process (in the fixing step). I think it’s more of the logistics of cutting the negatives, packaging, sending them back.
@Markimark151Ай бұрын
@@jeremyloveslinux I don’t know what Fujifilm uses in their film base, but I know it’s not logistics, because they recycle negatives for other products they make, it’s about their raw material shortages for making the film.

Having retired from Walgreens in 2018 due to a disability, and having a wife that still works for them, you are right. More people avoid the coming into the store. Walgreens, before I left, was working on some very cool and different revamping ideas. One store took up about a third of the front sales area and built in a doctors office. Another took out all tobacco and cigarettes. The point is that these companies know they have issues, but they need to get back to the basics. Smaller stores that carry necessities and a fully staffed pharmacy. I owned a retail business many years ago and learned that you are better to have 2 of 6 different items that 6 of 2 different items. Great video

This video is really funny to me; I actually work at a CVS in my town and we are actually one of the most successful locations in the area. We sometimes have slow shifts but usually the place gets decent traffic and we are often packed around Christmas and Valentines day with people coming in for greeting cards and gift-cards. I think we do so well thanks to a few reasons: 1 the store manager is really good honestly (makes working their feel less draining for us), 2 we are in a good location off a major road, 3 our prices are not that bad compared to most of the area (especially if you go for savings and coupons), 4 we carry mostly essential items or impulse buys, and finally 5 the population of our area has a large chunk of people 55 and older which I think CVS caters to better. Photo developing is definitely not our strong suit and that is because we have a 3rd party handling it and they seem to have a lot of issues as the one worker you spoke with mentioned; we do a lot better with the photo printing since we offer a lot of options at a decent price around the holidays. CVS absolutely has some problems to iron out but I think my location is at least currently outside of those issues.

Current employee here! CVS is definitely one of those chains where the variance between locations swings wildly between "weirdly nice for a drugstore" and "being in here should qualify as a health hazard". The two locations you showed off seemed very clean, but that belies the observable fact of the matter that there isn't much for the front-store employees to do while on the clock besides clean and maintain it. If your stores are near each other (within 10-15 minutes driving distance), I'd say one of them is liable to be on the chopping block for the next round of closures, especially if they don't have a MinuteClinic. The first store you showed even had an entire makeup wall removed by the looks of it (those weird signs on the black wall), which is never a good sign. You're absolutely right that most locations' draw is their pharmacy. At this point, the individual stores live and die on their pharmacy sales. That's the only thing keeping CVS in the black. Unfortunately, the worse an individual stores pharmacy performs, the more their hours get cut, which leads to the store performing poorly which leads to hours getting cut... you see where this is going. CVS, like all chain drugstores, experienced explosive profits during the pandemic and they expected that growth indefinitely and they're paying for it now. As for the photos, as far as I'm aware all of the film our store processes is sent to a lab in Atlanta, though that may vary depending on individual stores and their proximity to a Kodak lab. I find the quality of the developed photos depends heavily on the film used (old film develops poorly), and the individual lab they're sent to. Luckily the Atlanta lab seems pretty good, even if the turnaround isn't great. I always tell people the photos take 2-4 weeks, and they seem pretty okay with the wait. Fun fact: You'd expect the people getting film developed would be older, but most of my customers using traditional film cameras are teens, actually! Interesting video, it's fun to see what stores on the other side of the country look like!

I won't be going in there for anything other than prescriptions, especially when there's other stores in the plaza that have the exact same items at a cheaper price and without the glass.

Even then, the majority of people are buying 2 or fewer items in the store proper or are at the pharmacy. The store near me also has notoriously poor stock levels and one of those "Beer coolers" you can walk into. If you walk into it, it's just piles of discarded or overstocked regular beverages and the worst selection of beer I've ever seen. It's weird to me that "general merchandise" retail is suffering so much, but specialty retailers seem to be doing better in some cases. I’m still super appreciative of the pharmacy staff but can see they are over worked and understaffed. I use to be able to get prescription filled in 20 minute. Now it’s at a minimum of a day or two. I’ve gone in and heard people screaming that theirs is not ready and the pharmacist said the script just came over 5 minute ago. I usually wait one day before I go in and if one is ready and the other isn’t. I just say no problem I’ll come tomorrow. I always say please, thank you, not hold up the line with conversation if it’s busy and never dare pay for more than one or two items. I go upfront when I buy non prescription stuff. I’ve found this method beneficial because when I do encounter an issue the pharmacist usually helps me resolve it vs saying to call my doctor or insurance. A little kindness goes a long way. I’ve also noticed they don’t have the deals they use to. I don’t buy much merchandise unless I have a coupon
