Hey Bobcat - You're an artist with that excavator. Great to watch. Some people won't realize the time saved by someone on a machine that knows what they're doing. That can really cut man hours and make the next guys job much easier. No wonder the job turned out so well.

Built a similar wall except about 4 ft tall and 130 ft. long over twenty years ago. Used many tons of gravel behind the wall with a 4" drain line run along the base of the wall on the backside. Wall has served us well with No problems. Did it all with a skid loader and a pick and shovel along with a builders level. Saved a bunch of money doing it myself but worked my butt off.

Great operation of the bobcat. Best part of the video. I have 2 problems with the construction. 1) NO Drainage and 2) No Compaction. No relief of water behind the wall is a huge issue. I cant imagine that wall lasting very long. Freeze and thaw will destroy it in the winter.

@twitchy997 Thanks! Good eye but... Geo grid was not necessary because the wall was not over 4ft and there was solid ledge about 3ft behind the entire wall so there is almost no actual pressure on the wall. And no drainage needed because there is nothing but stone in between the ledge and the wall and the soil is extremely sandy below the wall so the water will drain.

Good video. That wall is unique to me - I like it. I think a lot of negative comments here are being made on traditional wall knowledge where there are horizontal breaks in the wall (stacking bricks, for example), but that wall seemed to use different sized stone and that breaks up any long horizontal lines that would cause weakness. It seems to me that the entire wall is tied into itself. I can only liken it to stacking hay on a wagon so that it doesn't fall over. Well done!

I was going to comment on your drainage issues that your were going to have, but I see that many before me did so. This to me is a prime example of how a structure may look just like the next, but it's integrity lies within the walls. Nice video, failed project. Good luck on learning some more...

Nice job and the aggregate will allow for drainage and the wall isn't tall enough to need additional drainage for hydrostatic pressure. I am a Civil engineer. The only part of the video that it didn't show is how they compacted the dirt and stone under the wall, but if they compacted it well and level which it appears to be level then I will have to say Job well done.

don't need geo grid if the wall is under 3' feet high. In this case you would have remove all that vegetation and dig way back in to that hill to get geo grid in. Nobody going to pay you for that. Don't always blame contractors. Sometimes home owners don't want to pay to get the job done right.

Thanks for the compliment on the operating. But... have you ever seen water coming out of a walls drainage pipe? Didnt think so. And if there is there are bigger issues and the wall will fail. And there is drainage pipe, its just not seen in the video. Compaction? Compaction of what? The base is compacted, (not shown again) and stone just dumped out of a truck is at 95% proctor density already... And its lasted 2 full winters already, still looks great! And still will in 20 years.

It might be worth the time to make few diamond cuts to the stone before you use the breaker. It might break clean off if you are lucky. :) It might be smart to use some sort of mask when you do diamond cutting, what goes in never comes out. :)

Interesting construction. No mortar used on the wall, but a lot of the stones had a black square on them, bitumen? Because of the fact it used a dry construction the joints all allow moisture through, that along with the coarse back fill will allow plenty of drainage. Also the wall isn't that high and will drain longitudinally as well. I felt it was a good quality tidy job. And no I'm not a rocket engineer, I'm a structural one.
@williamjackson59427 жыл бұрын
The only thing I noticed is that some of the blocks had pretty large holes and I would have thought that a little extra coarse stone in those pockets would have been a good idea.

Incredible work on the excavating, serious question though, I stumbled across this as I'm doing an assignment on retaining walls and it seems you have missed a step? Are there any measures in place for drainage the perhaps I missed? 9/10 times retaining walls fail because of excessive hydrostatic pressure so I'm just wondering what happened here?
@bikesolar58948 жыл бұрын
they didn't didn't use liner, and that is what mainly causes it. Also they use a coarse grain grave to allow it to be locked in and to allow the water to drain.those are my best guesses
