Mike, your videos really were a godsend when I was helping my son fix some concrete work around an old coal chute near the door of his garage that was letting water get into his basement. Thank you! We keep saying to each other whenever we work together, "No big deal!", just like you do. You have really done a good job of passing on your knowledge and most of all-- common sense advice. Well done.

I worked in a laboratory that freeze/thaw tested them SRW (new school) concrete retaining wall blocks. And there is a,wide range of quality. And you can't always tell by manufacturer, because there is one big 'popular' manufacturer that makes both decent and horrible products, so if says 'old castle' 😉 you can't tell if you're getting your money's worth or garbage.😅... I will tell you this, there is one manufacturer that stands out head and shoulders above the rest, and they make perfect products 100% of the time, and that is, 'Techoblock'. Those blocks will last a 100 years or more, even when exposed to salt!

You can tell by the sound of the block, the clink sound versus the hollow thud sound of the lower psi concrete.
@bonanzatime
@bonanzatime Жыл бұрын
@@RiverValleyLandscaping Yes that's a good indicator. You can tell the very good from the very bad that way. But the ones that barely pass or fail ASTM standards (which is the majority), it's not going to be so obvious. That's why they have to be tested in the lab to be fair to all parties.

Love your way of explaining 😊 Question: How would you make a concrete pole? Will you use rebar? The dimensions for that pole would be: 10,5ftx4"x4" I will need to make 30. To expensive to buy these at today's prices. I hope you will show how to construct poles like these 🙏 The poles are for a large wooden fence. Wooden poles won't last that long. That's why I will go for DIY concrete poles.
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck Жыл бұрын
Hi, it's best to ask a fence company, personally I don't think it would be stable and rebar expands and breaks concrete in many cases, I got a video " should I use rebar" yes or no? Mike haduck,

Hi Mike. Could you explain how they used to build fieldstone foundations 100+ years ago and how it differs from building a retaining wall?? I'd like to try to build one and build a shed on it just for a learning experience. No one builds them now because concrete is cheaper, stronger, and better. But I'd like to know how they did it here in New England "back in the day". Thank you so much for your excellent videos

Hi ElMar, there are three types of retaining walls in PA, those that fell down, those that are falling down and those that are going to fall down, , those types a walls are good for 30 to 35 years before they start disengaging, I recommend no wall but the city wanted one, with my experience that way it was built was best for the situation, rebar rust and expands for one thing, my opinion, I did a video called " retaining walls " yes or no ?
