Found out water from rain puddles is safe when i played a throwaway character who was only meant to see what was south of the map. Got all the way to the border and my character spend 7 days sleeping in the woods, drinking puddle water and eating bugs while being completely naked after he tore all his clothes away to bandage his few cuts. I don't know how long he could've survived like that because after seeing this hardy wildman survive doing nothing but walking in the woods i decided to try and play him like usual. He died soon after reaching the first town he had seen in days. RIP wildman....

I drank sometimes, rare times from river and was ok. I guess it's RnG? The river had fast current, lot's of sand and rocks and there's a kind of little catfish that folks name it "bottom cleaner". Some people did it as well and got sick though..

The fact a single sip of tainted water from a container kills you is silly. There should be a randomness factor, a lot of the time you shouldn't even get sick, and most often it should be treatable with bed rest. People drink from dirty poluted rivers in india and while sickness is rampant death is very scarce. Of course zombie apocalypse means many times you don't have the luxury of bed rest which would be the problem.

but if you yourself drank from one of those rivers, you'd get sick. locals, have localized immunities from years of drinking tainted sources. you can't go from drinking sterilized water to contaminated sources thinking your body adapts, it takes years at the cost of health

0:55 Funnily enough, 155 F is the internal temperature you're supposed to cook ground beef to in order to kill bacteria in it. It's also one of the temperature benchmarks when making jerky (145 F to 155 F). So a "room temperature" hamburger patty would be safe to eat and any thin strip of meat would become jerky in a few hours. Oh, and it would also kill a person. Come to think of it, if the water were also that temperature, it would have a lot fewer microbes that could live in it.

I don't think it is an oversight, I think it is to make sure the game isn't TOO difficult. You cannot go on a road trip because if you carry tainted water and drink it it will kill you but if you need a sip to survive you can drink from puddle, river and rain collectors.

@@FinetalPies So some science for you: Still water can grow bacteria, therefore water is more dangerous while inside a container. Running water (from a river) can't grow that much bacteria, so it is a little bit better

Something many players don't know is that characters can also drink water from rain collectors (the objects) fine as well. Perhaps more importantly, characters get away with drinking small amounts of tainted water from water containers, but it needs to be very small amounts at a time, and need to wait for recovery. The sickness power is 10x as much, so it may not be sufficient to live long-term with even with Low Thirst trait and avoiding heat, but it might be close, or possible, particularly if being fully satiated food-wise heals poison faster (and you stay full on something like berries/mushrooms). I don't know if it does or not.

You're aware that if you put said bottle in your main inventory, your character automatically drinks from it, right? Just learned about this lately and it's pretty useful, rarely have to worry about thirst so long as you refill the bottle once in a while.

@@sheepy719 rain collectors are closer to a container making the rain water more poisonous. But you can use a (crowbar? wrench?) To pipe rain collectors to a sink below which auto cleans the water. (only to a modern sink like in kitchens/bathrooms and the rain collector will not be safe, only the sink)

I don't know if this will be changed eventually, but you can boil tainted water in a plastic bottle. It works in real life too, as long as you heat the bottle slowly to avoid melting the plastic.

Actually that is clever from game prespective, doyou know why? Because you are next to a river and rivers are well known to be LESS tainted than regular ponds, etc. I am unsure tho that the results would be the same at a pond or smth, but this makes sense. Back then me and my classmates were on a trip and they just dipped their empty bottles in flowing river water. No sickness. There is a science behind it tho. When you are trying to get water from a flowing river DO NOT get it from the bottom. There is a thing called REYNOLDS number which basically means how turbulent or straight it is flowing. The flow of a river at the top is more straight(laminar) than at the bottom where it is turbulent(not straight flow, something like a horizontal mini tornado, etc. however you name it) By dipping it at the top, you minimize the chances of getting anything in your water that is dirt, infectious parts, etc. because at the top what will flow most likely is cleaner than what flows at the bottom. Still in real life, drink from purified sources, because there are about 14 or so purification processes water goes through until it reaches the "drink safe" state, but that is for mass production, so if anyone has a problem it is rather like "Well you are water allergic" or smth like that.

I’ve heard that eating more than one lemon grass does nothing, but they were testing it on berries. Is this wrong? Can you just zero out “Sickness” by smashing handfuls of lemon grass? Or does lemon grass work differently for food poisoning and tainted water? Im doubting that they’re different since they both cause “sickness”, but it definitely wouldn’t be the first time I was wrong. Especially considering that the virus also causes “sickness”, but it functions differently from food poisoning or smoking too many cigarettes. A sickness modifier that changes how lemon grass affects you? Or are the sicknesses completely separate systems?

Current lemon grass has a cooldown between useful uses now. You used to be able to spam it. The zombie infection does increase sickness, but it has its own infection meter that increases. So while you can use lemon grass to temporarily help with the sickness, it doesn't treat the root cause.

My character died after 2 months of self sufficient farm homestead managed successfully, until I decided to switch to another car (mine had 9% engine by that time) so I went to Muldraugh and died to janky animation + poor hit registration after grounded zombie (who climbed over a fence) lunged at me and my character did 180degree rotation and just fell into whole horde and died instantly without any animation. And it is all because I missed a hit even when there was a green outline. Also, the same character got bit through non-broken window when I ran into small saplings (erosion kicked in by that time), and it turned out my car's door was "open", but there is no animation to it. Such a BS most of the time

In real life rain water can make you sick. It all depends on where you live. Drinking rain water in LA or China or the UK or similar places can kill you. While drinking rain water in places like Montana or Canada is actually good for you. It also matters a lot how the rain water is collected. But assuming it’s falling into a clean container you only want to drink rain water in non-polluted rural areas. (This is all real life advice and doesn’t apply to zomboid)

Zombification? No, you can only slow it down a bit by staying well-fed or using Resilient. Antibiotics, Disinfecting etc, will not save you or lower the chance of zombification. Scratch: 7% Laceration: 25% Bite: 100%

They should give a small chance for tainted water to give you the zombie virus (not rainwater collected in a bucket, river water and puddles), although make it not occur at the start of the game and make it more likely as the game progresses, up to a certain point. It would more greatly encourage purifying water.
