The thing about the auger is that it also combines the shovel and the pick into one tool, meaning youd have an extra hotbar slot for a weapon or meds. But, it also means you have to carry gas.

Really appreciate you taking the time to test this out! I'm doing an INT build currently and I'm not investing into Miner or Motherlode heavily until late game. A decent auger and the crafting discounts should help offset that based on what I'm seeing. Great vid as always!

I play with player block damage at +25% because it doesn't really help in the late game but makes the early game a bit less tedious for me. As you say in this vid a bit of extra block damage doesn't always lead to fewer hits to break a block. The setting ends up buffing the low level stone axes more than anything else.

Another tip for mining that I use often. Is if you dig straight down to bedrock, then build a long shaft in a direction (like 50-100 or so blocks away), you can dig and go crazy and all the screamers will spawn above you, but not know where you are, as the tunnel entrance is so far the AI doesn't see it. And since they dont know that you are below them, they dont dig down either. Its how I do any sort of "long term" mine shaft. Of course the big issue with this sort of mining is you rely on luck to find the minerals that you want, but its not normally a big deal.

Love this info. Funny though, I went on a POI run, left my stuff running. When I got home, there were 3 'doorways' in various exterior walls, and a single screamer running amok. I usually get rid of all ground level doors & doorways, so I after that, I gave the zombies a single defensive doorway to attack in hopes they wouldn't do more damage to my base. I did assume the FP changed zombie behavior.

Personally I think A21 update is a like stepping stone update for the next update. Like the system they're playing around with is the progression system. I think they're are going to be 2 huge updates that is going to change progression. The first has already happened, learn by reading. The second is going to be the outfits that buff you. I believe that the Art of Mining bonus that allowed you to 1 shot blocks is going to come back as an outfit bonus. This will change the resource gathering tests once that update drops. The real question is how are you going to obtain outfits, will there bonus's be applied if you has X amount of the outfit equipped and if you have X amount of points into a stat that will allow you to wear the outfit and be proficient in wearing it. I believe, if TFP can deliver, A22 is going to be another game changer to how progression works. Maybe it'll be as broken... maybe not. Who knows.

@scootgorlen1818
@scootgorlen1818 Жыл бұрын
@@satiivaindiica which part are you questioning or asking for evidence? TFP has already come out and talked about the outfits being themed and using to buff the player. They just haven't gone in depth about it. That is of course, subject to change about the outfits though. The outfits could just be cosmetics and wont do a thing to the player. They just haven't been forth coming what they will do. It would make alot of since they for them the throw the outfit concept away because the progression seems kinda half baked. In A20, the game supported alot of team play with skill progression. If you had 5 players each player would be specc'd in 1 stat to cover all the bases for material and utility stuff. This made playing A20 kinda punishing for solo play. Doable absolutely but was favored toward group play. Now, in A21 progression is more solo oriented with the learn by reading. So, this is where I'm theorizing and I have no proof. I think A22 will bring on the outfits they've been talking about and change up the progression again and bring in more of the team based skill progression. It would make sense for them to keep on messing with the game progression in the next patch. But who knows.

I have been playing A21 on a server for a while now. we are on day 178 now with normal 1 hour days. I would say most of the time on the server was me. I have mined a good bit and I only use an auger for mining. I normally keep the auger going as to not generate more heat. but I think the heat is broken right now. I have mined for days and days with out being bothered by ANY screamers. I have had a few zombies come and bother me but it was either a wondering hoard or just random zombies walking about that happened to hear me. I have had one screamer come and to do that I had to click on and off the auger for a solid 30+ seconds. I have also noted that I have 4 forges and 2 chem stations going constantly in my base and hardly ever get a screamer and my base is in the wastelands. I can remember when mining was actually some what concerning as every 4-5 mins I would get a screamer and her mini hoard. I would normally use junk turrets to help protect me. but since A21 and all of its patches thus far I have yet to have any issues mining. even when I try to get a screamer to spawn most of the time they dont.

I don't know if anybody else here has mentioned it or if you do, I'm only about 30% of the way through the video, but something I feel that is important to mention is that the pickaxe, once you get down past the clay layer, (like about two blocks) and you're digging out a giant cave like you did, all of that sand down there you can also one-shot with the pickaxe. You don't need to switch between your shovel and pickaxe anymore which is huge for the pickaxe in a 1 v 1 against the auger. Art of mining might not be very good anymore but I feel like these changes to the pickaxe and stamina and block damage to sand and rock/iron are really good and outweigh the nerf to the book series.

I don't think the Q6 Auger would perform any differently. You were doing exactly 100 damage to blocks, a ~10% wouldn't cause it to break a block in less hits. I suppose it would ensure you could get that 100+ damage per hit though, since we don't know where your Auger falls on the variable damage stat. But... yeah, I think your auger was already doing as good as it gets for these tests.

Not sure if many others noticed, but not only did they buff the block damage of steel tools, but they also buffed the stamina usage. for those tests, the results come down to speed. the tool that allows you to break more blocks in the same amount of time will win. the only exception is clay. not only is the shovel slower, but it also gets less ressources per block for some reason (44 clay for shovel vs 48 for the auger, per block. no idea why this difference exists). so even if they both had the exact same speed, the shovel will still lose hard against the auger

I prefer the auger because it melts 10k blocks and I only have to carry one tool for harvesting vs also having to carry a shovel around. I guess it boils down to a few easy points: Auger: + Doesn't use stamina, lower food/water consumption. + Multitool, can do the work of three tools at once. - Generates heat like a bitch. - Consumes fuel. - Expensive crafting, needs motor tools unlocked. · Makes noise, which can get annoying. Pick: + Generates much less heat. + Can be faster than Auger in some cases. + Can be found earlier in game progression. - Consumes stamina, higher food/water consumption. - Benefits A LOT from strenght builds.

The real bonus on the Shovel/Pick vs auger is more the fact its less to carry around. Though the balancing is defiantly worth note. It in the end now, unlike it used to be, comes down to preference at this point. Which is honestly well worth it in the long run. Guess its time to see chainsaw vs axe now, see if it's worth carrying around chainsaws for more than the casual zombie massacre lulz. Which mind you isn't the greatest weapon in 7D2D, it's just fun to do from time to time when you can get away with it.

I have always favoured the pickaxe when mining ores, mainly because of the noise they make, 1] it's sodding annoying and 2] it is so loud you can not hear a horde/bears/dogs coming till they are close. Interesting about the auger with clay soil grinding there the speed and volume of resources and not being trapped underground make it very worth while. What are your thoughts on HP ammo? i prefer AP for it's armour penetration and combined with the penetrator perk was great for horde nights it you use a base that lines them up. Thanks for the testing video, Take care, God bless one and all.

The auger should be really get a buff in terms of "Rocky" ore types. I mean it has the mentioned disadvantages. If you consider it is called the better tier it really should outperform the pickaxe in any mining aspect. So you should have to choose between way faster mining and way safer mining. I mean If you compare the weapons for example. MG40 way better then the AK. The autoshotgun also way better then the Pump. The Sniper... You get the point I guess.

I think the auger wouldve gotten more coal if you mined in a new coal node since everywhere you look there will be coal and you dont have to move and walk as much, moving/walking is less time gathering unlike the pickaxe who had first dibs on the coal area to mine wherever it wants. The auger does speed up farming but has a lot of threat in using it, if youre at the stage where you can use auger, you are probably strong enough to deal with the screamers. I still would use the pickaxe since carrying gas and dealing with screamers are annoying, would use auger when i want to have a quick farming run though.

Auger definitely needs a massive buff if this is the case. Given that it causes significantly more heat and requires gas to use, there's really no reason for the Steel Pick to be giving comparable ore yields, much less outperforming it entirely. Just makes the auger borderline useless. Doesn't even free up an inventory slot since the slot you'd be using for a shovel just gets eaten up by the gas anyway.
@IzPrebuilt

The real niche the auger holds is allowing non-strength builds to mine somewhat quickly (still nothing compared to a strength build) because it doesn't use stamina so if you have a 1str build with no miner69er using the auger is better because you'll need to be using a stone axe to stop yourself constantly running out of stamina. So by the simple benefit of being better than a stone axe but not having to stop every 5 swings for 10 seconds to regen stamina the auger should massively out perform it. But for a strength build, or even just someone with like 3 ranks of miner69er? Pick probably wins.

Been ages since I played 7dtd, but does (or did it ever) damage overrun (damage that goes over the block's HP) give resources proportional to the overrun or are resources from a block always the same all other modifiers being the same? I ask because if you had a steel pick with a higher damage roll or higher tier, this could skew results. Particularly on the stone test were steel pick is "capped" and auger might get better with a better roll. I take it you had all 7 mining perk books for this test? Last time I tested any of this was maybe A19 when finding the mythically difficult to find T6 steel pickaxe with the damage roll to one shot stone was grind enough. Very glad to see that craftable steel pickaxe can now reach this without some of the best damage rolls.

Yeah my impression of a21 has not been helped by horde spawning. On day 11 I open Trader Joel's front gate and am greeted with a wandering horde of 10 zombie dogs that just immediately attack. Obviously I die, no chance whatsoever. A handful of sweatlords have the pimps dialling this shit up that a casual like me is wondering why this is even a supposed survival game, as one often doesn't. Death may not matter in game but the frequency of it in my recent playthroughs has been immersion shattering and heavily undermined the half dozen changes about this alpha that I actually like. The core mechanics of coming up against zombies, especially in certain POIs are so cheap, but TFPs want to make the game increasingly binary in how one solves problems and plays out of fear of players using cheap solutions. The irony is they're just forcing players to use more of them and come up new ones. Its quite amazing that they've managed to make progression in this game almost as annoying as Valheim and sometimes more.

I put one door (that I never actually use) on ground level since they always path to them, then put a dart trap facing down right above the door wired to a plate switch in front of the door. It's quick, cheap, and completely automatic. If you do this with a door you plan on using, place a switch before the plate switch so you can turn it off, or always sprint thru the doorway.

@@MrHarumakiSensei Dart trap only fires when an entity is on the plate, so that 2 points of block damage takes a long time to wear down the plate, if it actually hits the plate at all. Most just hit the dead body as it stops firing.

@@vohrtechs5974 I never tried it because I thought damage to the plate would be too much. I forgot the body would absorb a lot of the darts. Thanks for the tip!

wait, Iron Shovels should do the same damage than a steel shovel, but at a faster rate, that would affect the results?
@IzPrebuilt
@IzPrebuilt Жыл бұрын
this was done with an iron shovel. so no. The steel shovel would be slower than the iron shovel and the iron shovel was 1/3 the speed of the auger.
@syphon583
@syphon583 Жыл бұрын
No they would be the same rate. Even though the steel technically does more damage, they both 1-shot clay (assuming you're using a high enough quality level iron shovel). You also don't swing a steel shovel any faster than an iron shovel either. It just uses more stamina. There is literally no advantage to use a steel shovel because what else do you use a shovel for than digging up clay and resource pallets (which also go down with one shot). It would actually be a downgrade due to the increased stamina usage. IMO, what they should do to increase the steels shovel's usefulness is quite the opposite. Reduce the amount of stamina it costs to use it. It is a more efficient tool (theoretically) and thereby should be easier and less intensive to use. It's meant to be an "end-game" tool. Make it worth it.

that bonus for 20% chance to one shot ore should stay as is, auger in A20 was fun.. Now it is sooooo boring to mine ores with it + you get more screamers +it mostly is not faster than picx + it uses quite a lot fuel + its loud af... so, where is any benefit against picx? i do not see any major upgrade from steel picx... they messed this up so bad, same with water collectors which magicaly generates glass jars... I found T6 auger with 40.8 block damage, its still kinda useless.. wtf tfp :(

This sucks. The auger needs a big buff. Just think about it, in what world a motorized tool would lose to a damn pickaxe? Auger is the next tier and should be better.

The Progression.xml file says that it affects anything with the the tag "miningTool" which in items.xml appears on the stone axe, iron pick, steel pick, taza's axe and the auger but not the iron axe, steel axe or chainsaw.

The Steel Pick could probably get better at 6, because of less stamina use.

With miner 69er up to 4 you never need to stop for stamina. Ever. It's awesome. Unless youre using power attacks you dont run out. So no a lvl 6 really wouldn't make a difference in this scenario Edit and also power attacks are pointless when mining as they aren't even close to double damage. Its like maybe 5% more block damage so its pointless it just guarantees you run out of stam. However for weapons it makes huge difference. Like against entities. But blocks, no.

Would not use the stack options in crafting, the time vs material save just does not seem worth while any more. Stacks take an insane amount of time to craft in the chemist station, should be reviewed for balance...but I won't hold my breathe.

I will always prefer a pickaxe anyways. For one, the noise the auger makes kinda nauseates me. Second, it attracts screamers even more than the pickaxe. And the gasoline and repair kits needed, not my thing. But then again, I have not tried the auger since A21. But for the sound alone, I just dislike it. I am content with a pickaxe!
