One of the unique features of this radio that I really like is the "priority transmit" function, which is item 02 in the menu (TX.SEL). When you have dual monitor enabled, the priority transmit function lets you TX on whichever frequency you last received a signal on. This is handy when you're carrying the radio in a pouch (such as those made by Specter Gear) and operating it via a speaker mic. And speaking of speaker mics - i can confirm that the speaker mic that Retevis offers for the RA89 does have a rubber gasket to prevent water intrusion. It is held in place by two thumbscrews. 73 de W9DNE

Thank you for this great review. I always enjoy your videos since they are very thorough and informative. The o ring in the antenna connection is an awesome idea.

I have 3 of these radios. Pretty decent especially the IP rating plus the mic gain on this radio is really 👍

Thank you for the review! I got two of these. It's interesting that you find this radio's RX audio to be a bit "muffled". Both of my radios sound a bit high-pitched and even slightly "buzzy" to my ears. I find it to be an advantage in noisy environments, eg in a moving car. At home, I just put my thumb on the speaker to make it sound more natural. I got my second RA89 because I think this radio has excellent RX sensitivity, perhaps even on par with the Wouxun UV9 series. I use the same Wouxun antennas as the UV9.

I believe this radio has a membrane over the speaker for waterproofing, which may cause the slight muffling effect.

I ordered the waterproof speaker mic off the Retevis website. Should be here this coming week. However I can’t seem to find a ptt that will keep its ip rating and would like to run this with a headset eventually.

Great video. I'm looking at either this one or the Btech BF-F8HP Pro. The RA89 is more weather resistant, but the Btech has Bluetooth and NOAA preprogrammed.

Unrelated question....have you heard of the Baofeng UV22? I saw it on Amazon and there's only a couple of videos about it on KZbin, and those videos aren't very well done in my opinion.. The interesting thing to me is that the 22 has a channel knob, 999 channels, and apparently has memory banks. I like all of those things but I haven't heard anything about that radio.

Hi @KS6DAY, do you still recommend Yaesu FT-65 over this? What is the "best" radio around FT65 price?
@SK-rj1ti2 ай бұрын
The RA89 has better RX sensitivity (excellent, in fact), more power, better IP rating, and it is cheaper. But the RX audio on the RA89 is so-so. You might not like it. The FT-65 has better RX audio and is more compact. But it doesn't have USB charging, lacks some features that the RA89 has, and is more expensive. I have both. When I need better RX sensitivity, I will grab the RA89. I use it almost interchangeably with superhet radios (except for RX on 442.000 MHz).

I have both radios. The receive ability of both is pretty close but where Yaesu kills themselves is no USB charging 🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻. I’d give a slight edge to the RA89 mainly on the usb and waterproofing and power.

Does spectre gear have a local storefront or pickup location? Or just online shipped sales?

Just online. We don't have any kind of retail storefront.
