Mostly I'm concerned with - is this a legit standards compliant USB-C port that has the hardware to trigger a PD charging device to turn on or not. If it doesn't have that, and requires an A to C cable - it's useless to me. I actually prefer a single large memory bank to one that's forced in to like - 10 banks of 100 channels each, with each being discrete rather than having 999 channels with the OPTION of adding channels to groups (banks). I'd rather have an old school backlit LCD dot matrix display that I can see in full sunlight than these new "fancy" ones.

When I had Uniden Bearcat scanners, time out mode was for how long the radio waited after a transmission ended, that it resumed with the scan. Could this be the what it does for the TD-H3?

If you care about secure comms, run line checks several times throughout the day, regardless of if you hear a bunch of dumbazz cops or not. If some nerd pops up talking about acceptable frequency bands, tell him to fall back - the law can’t touch you!

i had the same problem with two batteries. i finally today got replacement batteries and it works fine now. Our repeater is on 147.140 and when i would key up it would shut the radio off. both batteries the same. i sent them a video of it. they asked for the info from behind the stickers on the batteries. They said the frequency was shutting it off and it was in the battery electronics. I bought this months ago and finally got replacement batteries today and it now works. I just can't figure out how to turn it off. It seems to always be on from when i install the battery. if i turn the switch on top off, it is still on.

if i charge the battery for a bit, it resets it and it will turn on again

Are the pouches made local or in the USA? Will there ever be an opportunity for a less tactical civilian color scheme such as purple? 🤔
@KS6DAY2 күн бұрын
The pouches are made in Visalia, California. We have considered doing other civilian colors, but the cost and sourcing issues involved for each color are enormous. For any given color it involves color matching cordura, pack cloth, velcro, webbing in multiple widths, cordage and thread. Just adding one particular color amounts to thousands of dollars in material investment. If the end result is a handful of pouches sold it amounts to a sizeable loss.

Thanks for the interesting video. You should have showed the actual test. I did the test on two different spectrum analyzers, one being the TinySA Ultra. Here's the part that concerns me. Do the test on the H3 and look at the second harmonic. It's only 36 db down. I realize the FCC focuses on the third order harmonic and fifth order harmonics. Is that because the even order harmonics are usually less than the odd order harmonics? Either way, I find the second order harmonic questionable. Barry, KU3X

Scott, thanks for this in depth review/info download. I have been on the fence about the 390 (Plus) due to the programming challenges as related by some. I think at such a good price point, I'm gonna take the plunge. I really want to get into the DMR world. Blessings. N6TIL

Great review. I purchased 3 of the 390 Plus versions and love them. Best bang for the buck in a DMR radio. One thing to note, the Plus version of the 390 is a 5 watt radio and has no GPS. The Anytone DMR radios have more memory channels and features, but don't have the IP rating and toughness of the TYT. For tactical use, the TYT is 100% the radio to have. I don't do the internet thing with them. I'm looking forward to future videos on this radio. I plan on buying a couple more. They are that good. If you need GPS or want the 10 watts, pay attention to which model you buy. Thanks again, your reviews and deep dives are the best on the net !

I think a person could use a simple SDR dongle and the right software and decode any of those digital protocols, but I agree with you, that person would have to get lucky enough to be in range of you and happen to be listening to the right frequency at the right time. One other thing a small group could do is have several different frequencies in their comms plan and routinely change frequencies and even change bands if they have a dual band radios. All these things are good things to think about. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

I've used the TYT's for years. They are cheap and work good with DMR AES 256 for my 21 licensed VHF channels. Regular DMR and D-Star like the hamsters use can be easily monitored. They are not the quality of a Motorola and more expensive radios but are satisfactory for entry level, training exercises and light duty work.

TY for the video. As an MD-UV390 Plus owner there are a couple observations about it. 1. When in VFO mode, the channel isn't locked. The channel knob will change the channel, even when the radio is locked. 2. When in channel mode, the channel knob will still change the channel. That is an intentional design feature I'm sure, but it can be a problem at times. To get around this, I would create zones with only a single channel in them. Then, even if the knob moves the channel stays the same. Cheers!

390 screen is too dark to consider buying it. Your reviews are thorough and amazingly honest. Torn between FT60R and VX-6R - which one would you pick?!? Thanks
@Q17454 күн бұрын
I have both the 380 and 390 (neither are plus versions), both screens are identical in brightness. Honestly, for the price both radios are great. I do like the 390 better, the biggest reason being it is nearly impossible to accidentally change the channel by hitting the channel knob. It is relatively easy on the 390. As far as the FT60 vs VX6R I know they are both great radios but I haven’t used either. I _do_ have a VX7R which was discontinued a few years ago, it is still a fantastic radio and is similar to the 6R.
@johnk237053 күн бұрын
@@Q1745 Both of the Yaesu radios are fantastic. Each has pluses and minuses. The VX-6 has a better IP rating. The FT-60 has higher capacity batteries that cost much less. The AA battery tray in the FT-60 will power the radio at full power, the VX-6 AA tray will only allow 1.5 watts. The VX-6 has the 220 band and transmits @ 1.5 watts on 220. The VX-6 requires a special microphone plug, so your other microphones won't work with them The other problem with the VX-6 is that there is so much electronics stuffed in a small package that they sometimes don't have the sensitivity of the FT-60. Some people have had their VX-6's go deaf as they age. Most hold upwell. Either radio is a good choice. Just be aware that some have had problems down the road with the VX-6. The FT-60 will still be working when we are all dead and gone. The thing is a brick and I hear the BATF is looking at registering them as weapons.

It's kind of frustrating trying to find info on the right cords to use here ... 3.5mm jacks can be TRRS, TRS, or TS. It'd be great if there was a pinout of the jack on the speakermic, and also the Walkers headphones because there's also sometimes ways to interconnect even if they are different. My first thought is a standard basic TRS plug to TRS plug cable, but I could be wrong. I see earpieces that are TS, but it's hard to say without any specs.

GMRS guy here who’s been a radio hobbyist for years and started on scanners. I’d like to see frequencies used more instead of channel numbers but I understand the simplicity of channel numbers for casual users who just talk radio to radio, and compatibility with consumer FRS which also operates in channel numbers. But, when you start getting into GMRS repeaters, now frequencies become important and those aren’t standardized “channel numbers”, they’re whatever you programmed into your radio after channel 22. And the repeater frequencies 550-750 also happen to overlap GMRS channels 15-22 though typically 15-22 aren’t used for repeaters as they’re simplex channels…. And it goes on! Guess we are using both. I’d like it if more GMRS radios that are marketed to GMRS licensed operators (as opposed to retail blister pack FRS/GMRS) showed both the channel number and frequency rather than one or the other.
