I use a VHF Marine radio on a regular basis. There are a few things to keep in mind: - they have a bunch of channels, but only a few of them are open for use by the general public. You really need to know which channels to use for hailing, calling for help, opening a lock or drawbridge, and general chatting - they are really only useful where there are a lot of other boats around, especially big ones, which are required to have and monitor a radio whenever underway. That generally means coastal waters, the Great Lakes, canals, etc. basically anywhere you are likely to find a Coast Guard base. Most recreational lakes have little or no coverage. - there is a set procedure for hailing and talking, especially when you are calling the Coast Guard. It is really important to know and follow those procedures. - range is dependent on height. Coast Guard bases usually have high antenna towers and can be reached from 15-25 miles away. Boaters are required to relay any emergency calls that are unanswered by anyone else. - when I take a group of kayakers out we use FRS waterproof radios for communications because it is less complicated and less likely to get anyone in trouble. Unlike the FCC, the Coast Guard takes misuse of marine radios seriously! I have the important VHF channels programmed into my GMRS radio so I can monitor them, and I only pull out the Marine band radio for emergencies. So far I have only used it to relay messages from other boats. Hopefully that’s all I will ever need it for! - they can be used for communication between boats or from boats to shore. On shore they are supposed to be used one under very specific situations.

When we were near the coast of Florida during a storm, there was tons of traffic from boats. It was cool to hear the traffic and kinda scary as some of the boaters were in distress and needing help

I am so new and I ride in TN Lakes, I think I purchase the wrong item base on your info. The purchase the Standard Horizon 890

@@kkutube1972Standard Horizon radios are great, nothing at all wrong with them. The problem is that hardly anyone in most lakes use Marine VHF radios. These days cell phones predominate. VHF is most useful when communicating with commercial vessels or with bridge/lock keepers.

Those are the best radios you can get for the money for point to point and combine them with marine boat radio in a car with a vhf antenna or even a base radio with an antenna on a roof 10 mile talk arounds are doable. Bad news if one of the people in the talk around don't have a foot in a puddle you are not legal. Don't let that stop you. Channel 16 is the call channel and research local harbor talk around and traffic channels and stay away from them. The higher channels are likely just fishermen telling lies and shooting the bull. Use those channels. Be aware the new marine radios transmit GMRS encoding for rescues just like cell phones. So if you do cause trouble on the radio. DNR and Coast Guard does have capabilities of hunting you down.

Marine radios are to be used on the coast and water, is not a CB. The CG monitors the use of marine radios.

Thank you for sharing with us. I live on the coast in Southern Maine and this might come in very handy as a radio listener.

102 inch whip is for CB radio at 27 MHZ, Marine Radio is in the 160 MHZ range which is VHF requiring a much shorter antenna.

I was going to ask if those are only for going on the ocean. You answered that question. Do folks use CBs on lakes or just marine radios?
@FarpointFarms

CB is not really used on lakes or oceans.
