You can program it via the buttons aswell, it just takes FOREVER to do it that way. Luckily CHIRP now supports BOTH the RT95 and RT95VOX version.

I love my 2 rt95 radios. One mobile. One in a go box with a jpole. I have found the output of both mine slightly higher than advertised. The one thing about programming you did not mention. Although the software is archaic, Retevis has given a manual programming wonder. This is one radio with what I've found to be a rare feature on budget radios but a wonderful one for mobile and go box radios. I can program on the go completely from my hand mic and has the ability to name the channel without using software. A feature I use when traveling along with repeater book. Thanks for the review. 73. Initially I was thinking of installing it in my teardrop camper, but I don't know if I want to spend the time to put in all those radio channels for the entire state using the clunky software. Otherwise I think I'll be using mine in the shack as the backup radio to monitor the auxiliary channels during SKYWARN nets.

Found a seller on Ebay that included the cable. Store name is "Let's Get Ready". They also gave me a 2gb flash drive with the programming software on it. That was a nice touch. It was a bit quirky opening it up. Got into the test mode and it was on '2' which should be good for 70cm. I had to set it to 3 and then set it to 2 and it works fine. Software isn't as bad as some Chinese programming softwares. I recommend you program one repeater so you can test if it all works. THEN load up the software and it's all done. I'm very impressed with this radio. It's nice from the fact if it gets stolen out of the truck not too big of deal. I would buy another. Different story if a $500 radio got nabbed. 73

I have the same radio but under the AnyTone name brand. Programming was my number 1 complaint. It was my first radio, I would suggest that any new radio operator shy away from this unit till they get a better understanding of frequencys and programming. It almost made me give up amateur radio.

Just picked one of these up in the US but under the Midland brand, pn DBR2500. Same radio as the Anytone AT-778UV but with a readable manual (still confusing) and Midland labeling. Software is on the Midland website and they run specials. Got it plus the programming cable, shipped in the US for $107. Opening up the freq range is the same as your link but the Midland software too has a file you can run to open up the range.

It appears that memory names (alpha tags) can only be five characters long. Is there any way to make them six?

Not that I'm aware of, doing so would probably involve a firmware update and would the radio have enough memory available to expand the tags. The alpha tags are only 5 characters, which is weird because you are unable to put in an entire 2x3 callsign. I had troubles with writing the tags to the radio. I'd put them into the programming software, but for some reason they'd never carry over.

Good work Mike, you are sounding much more confident and relaxed in front of the camera! To consider also, government departments do not like freeband radios as you are aware, so making them harder to program and also locking out VFO mode actually makes them usable in _more_ markets, not less.

This appears to be just like the Anytone 778uv in appearance and spec by spec. With the exceptions that the Anytone can be manually programmed and is already open to 70cm.

The RT95 and the Anytone 778UV are functionally the same radio. But the firmware appears to be slightly different between the two. For example: the RT95 does DTMF and the Anytone will not. The programming files are also incompatible between the two radios.

I have a 778UV with vox. One glaring problem that was not mentioned here is that the volume control wraps around. If you reduce to zero volume and advance one more click, you get max volume level. Wow. This is terrible and totally preventable with a small coding change to the radio firmware. Ugly....

Michael, I realize this video is quite old, but I just purchased the similar AnyTone AT-778UV. My main question is what is the proper channel spacing for 2 meters and 70 cm. Channel spacing opens up a whole can of worms, but no for the reason you're asking. TLDR: use 12.5khz spacing as it will cover both 12.5 and 25khz channels. Amateur VHF/UHF channels spacing historically was at 25 Khz as that was the setting for early VHF commerical equipment. As demand for mobile frequencies increased, the FCC moved commercial and public safety entities to a 12.5 KHz spacing. The amateur radio service never had a spacing restriction, but many amateur repeaters are repurposed commercial units, so the 12.5 Khz spacing slowly infiltrated the bands. This caused conflict with adjacent channels and repeater coordinators worked hard to make everyone fit within the spectrum. But in urban areas, the band go so densely packed that you would be hard pressed to find an open frequency in the 2 meter band. When you consider this density can affect repeaters up to 120 miles away, it becomes an even greater challenge. In 2012 the FCC reduced channel spacing to 7.5 KHz and mandated narrow band for public safety and land mobile operators. 10 years ago we had a glut of 12.5 Khz repeaters hit the market and probably in the next decade we'll see the same thing with 7.5 Khz repeaters as they get replaced. So what does this mean to you. 12.5 Khz spaced frequency assignments are the most common on amateur bands and setting your transceiver to that spacing will allow you to dial in the frequency or to VFO scan at the proper steps. But you may run into an oddball frequency that doesn't quite match the plan. In that case you may need to change the step rate to something smaller, like 5 or 2.5 Khz to make it fit.

I've seen mention of the same, so I had to try it out. It works! I was able to transmit DTMF tones with the radio, connecting and disconnecting to a node or our local IRLP enabled repeater. To transmit DTMF you depress the PTT and press the appropriate numbers on the microphone.

The Reverse function is buried down in the menus, so in itself, it's not a very accessible feature. But you can program one of the buttons to reverse the frequency, or listen to the input of the repeater. Maybe P3, which is the Monitor button, could be assigned that task.

It is a shame you did not do more than parrot published specs. It would have been meaningful to see actual power output for both bands and even more so the actual rx specs if a good signal generator/service monitor was available. The rather subjective user review was pretty well delivered though.

Thanks for the comments. Inexpensive radios rely on Direct Conversion for detecting the RF signal and can be prone to poor sensitivity and overloading because they lack the proper filtering in the receiver stage. I don't have any fancy test equipment, but I'll see if I can work up a video that demonstrates the 'real world' difference between receiver types.

This is bullshit. you can open the bands manually by pressing a few buttons.

All you have to do is turn it on while holding P4 & FUNC buttons, keep them held and press power and wait until it boots. Turn the knob until "Mode [#]" shows in display (like Mode 1 or Mode 3, etc.) Then key the mic & turn the knob until the mode you want (like Mode 2) appears at the bottom. Then just turn off the power. Mine was in Mode 1 from the factory. Mode 2 opened the frequencies from 136-174 MHz and 400-490 MHz.
