Gayle, your feedback is so positive and intentional. You are so kind and supportive. Such an amazing person. I haven't watched you guys in a while and see how hard you have worked and researched to make this episode. Why you don't have millions of subs still surprises me. You are both awesome educators.

My husband is gone for a month so I am thrilled to be able to empty closets and changing the house around because it starts as chaos and I can’t finish in one day so I can wake up and start again . I sold 2 shelf units and an old sewing surger on marketplace . Tomoorow thrift store drop off . And old towels to humane society . So glad to have you to inspire. Keep inspiring

Thank you Gayle and Ed for your kind and compassionate words on this video, especially about hoarding. Sometimes embarrassment nudges folk into exaggerating how their life is panning out..with no thought or regard for some people’s reality which is trauma based and true hoarding is the result with multiple issues often running alongside. Life can be hard and lonely when one is feeling defeated. You two really are great cheerleaders, thank you! Clair UK

Wow- the content and timing of this one really hit home for me! I've been plagued for so long by guilt I feel every time I tell my boys they can't have friends over (until I "get the house straight" from decluttering and remodeling). I occasionally give in, reminding myself that children aren't perfectionists like me, so they won't care if I'm in the midst of a bit of decluttering-induced chaos. But I need to keep that mindset, and remember that house shame should be a tool used to spark improvement, not to hold me back from living. A few days ago, when telling my 7-year-old our house was too messy for his friend to come in, I was on the brink of tears- and my son said "Mom, it's fine. You should see how messy THEIR house is; it's waaaaay worse than here". Everyone is fighting a battle behind the scenes that we know nothing about ❤️ Thank you, Gayle.

For those finding it difficult to let things go, I am passing on what the pros who help people who have systemic hoarding, which is to let one thing go, wait and see how you feel the next day, the next two days, the next week. That way you can experience the lessening of attachment, and it really does get easier. Gayle oftne talks about clients who start out having a huge difficulty with each item, and after a while stuff starts "flying out the door". There really is a life beyond stuff (and I speak as a life long shopper). thank you for your time.

To the Lady whose family said, oh, that is so small, what does it matter? My way of handling that is saying, “This is a yes-no question.” Then show them the item. If they say yes, keep, then hand them the item to find it a new home. This method works when asking my spouse to watch something. If the answer is yes, i want to watch it, but not now, i take that to mean no. Works great! That way stuff does not pile up.

I must be your exception to the hair ties. I'm forever losing them or they break. Once they get stretched out, they become rubber-bands for frozen pkgs I've opened, or items opened when traveling etc. Sometimes clips on bags are useless if they fall off.

I said the exact same thing. Mine break or stretch out. If they don't pop off on their own, I'm throwing them away!

Last Week's Tittle Success!!!!! I reset my/our set point, eliminated THREE of our SIX pantry shelving units (each 30 inches wide X 72 inches high X 14 inches deep). My housemate/friend doesn't complain about anything but I finally realized that he was probably not happy with half the ground floor looking like a Mini-Mart. We will now get nice folding doors/screen parts to easily "close" the shelving units. And then my church mentioned an org that helps people go from temp housing to permanent and they need stuff - I bagged three bags of extra and duplicate kitchen stuff. 😄😄😄 (I know it is too late for Ed to mention this but I shall preen in private).

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Those are the Freedoms written in U.S. Declaration of Independence ! With the Fourth of July coming up, I am reminded of these important words. And that In my own home, I need to give myself the Freedom of clear space and actual room to live my own Life. I need to give myself, the Freedom of Liberty to be free from the tyranny of possessions , I do not really want or need. I need to give myself the Freedom of the pursuit of the Happiness in an easily livable home.

Re: Hair Ties I LOVE a few assorted sizes/colors/textures of hair ties to use as elastics in my Office Supplies. Maybe weird, but actually a simple, useful accessory in many situations for me.

Shame - I have known many creative people (mostly professional writers and artists). They have absolutely no shame about mess - their self respect/identities have nothing to do with the state of their homes.

I haven’t been diagnosed but I was definitely a hoarder, it’s not me self deprecating, I’d fall and have a crap-o-lanche of stuff on top of me. I think the important thing is not to exaggerate our words. Like when your guest said she had PTSD from clearing out clothing. You only get PTSD (clinically speaking) when you survive, or witness, a life threatening event. Unless she was a hoarder herself, it was probably a stressful situation. I live with PTSD and it’s much worse than dealing with decluttering a family members hoard (I’ve lived with both).

I think that a nicer way to say it is, 'I seem to have a growing horde (or collection) of...' You can fill in the blank as you choose.

Labeling something as "useful" is such a trap that my husband always brings up. I honestly don't know how to respond to this.

If it's useful, it needs to be passed on to someone who will use it. If it's not in use, it is no use to you.

Every object is useful. But having uncluttered empty space is useful for your quality of life. Having to take less time to clean and organize and deal with stuff matters. You both live in the house and are both entitled to have a 50% say in how space is used.

I think the roller skates with a framed photo of the person roller skating is a wonderful place of honor celebrating the person’s ability from their youth. Also, it’s a good, tangible reminder of a time of different physical abilities and a continuous healthy mindset and attitude. Sometimes we need a smile from our younger selves to encourage our current selves.

if you have carpet, using a water filtration vacuum will totally clean any dust in the air (and your carpet). Nothing escapes water. I have an old D-series Rainbow brand vacuum and it is amazing.

Like Netflix, a library is constantly changing. Neither is a storage place for books or movies you actually want access to, unless you just want ANY book or movie.
