Fellow unschoolers here! This video helped me SO much, as we were so back & forth about “screen time”. This helped my oldest feel heard & valued! Thank you ♥️ We are still navigating what works for our family on an almost weekly basis.. as she feels how she FEELS after “too much time on KZbin” etc. and then we can have good conversation about that and chat the details, as I tell her I feel the same way when I used to spend too much time scrolling through social media! Great philosophies here on this channel. WE FEEL HEARD ❤

Thank you, great video! This is our family philosophy about screens. I really like how you framed it. Our son is nine and autistic with a nervous system disorder. Screen time is very regulating for his nervous system. Yes he plays Minecraft and other games (which we also see value in) and he also popped out to the family room the other day and told us about a video he watched about physics and the laws of motion. Thank you!!

Really gave me some great insight about how to change my own thoughts and mindset about this topic into a more positive one. I never really thought about the comparison between today’s world and my world years ago and what we had at our disposal and the differences. It is so much different today! Thank you Sue for this useful information.

Ok, great, but for those of us who already understand this, we want to help support the more healthy parts and encourage the constructive pieces, and provide moderation to the addictive and destructive pieces. We use screens ourselves and know what it umbrellas, and the attractive nature of what constantly lies within that device. That is what we struggle with, not the wordplay of it.

I guess when I say "parents struggle", it's because the word choice makes a big difference in how the kids respond. And THAT is the most important part in being able to have any kind of influence or access to what they're choosing. We help support healthier aspects by having conversations about them - conversations about the less healthy aspects too though. This is part of helping them learn how to navigate. We won't always be there to be The Gatekeeper.

When motion pictures were first released, parents and schools and churches, would print and post the dangers of motion pictures. They would say that it was dangerous for kids, the technology was going to be outdated soon and it warned of taking too much of their free and family time. Sound familiar? Now we watch “motion pictures” on our phones! Or TV’s or tablets, etc. Heck, I could even play one on my fridge if I wanted 🤦🏼♀️ Every new technology brings controversy. I feel it’s up to the family to choose what works and bring the balance they feel is right for them. It’s not easy to navigate (again - it’s new) but that doesn’t mean in totality, it’s evil.
